So as it goes, I loaded sudokuhax to launch hbmenu. I was using TWLnf to install dsiware. TWLnf works great, a game won’t get installed if the ticket and app data don’t match. It’s got good checking before installing dsiware to Nand. If I didn’t get the ticket to match the app data, I’d exit to hbmenu and eject the sdcard, edit the files and insert the sd card, then load TWLnf again and try installing the dsiware. Did that a few times. Well, after this last install failed, I exited TWLnf and returned to hbmenu and ejected the sd card. The Dsi powered off (this has happened before and it powered back on, no problem). I went to turn Dsi back on and now I get the error, “an error has occurred...”. I did notice, while in TWLnf this last time, looked like my Nand had 40mb free. I can boot to the calibration menu, but not to the system menu. I tried removing the sd card and my r4i gold 3ds rts cart. Still, the error persists. I’m now looking at hardmod tutorials. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks for reading.

Looks like it's bricked, best chance is to buy one with Flipnote on Ebay if you're not that great at soldering. Then again, what have you to lose? But yeah, it's bricked.

This is a known problem I talked about to @JimmyZ, he's working on adding a check to it on TWLnf but it's not there yet, which led to this brick.

The problem here is simple. The Nand itself, being a storage device, has a maximum capacity that the files on it cannot exceed. This is true across all storage devices, but if you had already been at that capacity TWLnf would've been unable to install Sudoku.

HOWEVER- The launcher itself also has a limit on the amount of mb of DSiWare you can have installed, and that's around 130 mb. If you try to install more than 130 mb of DSiWare, you will be successful in adding them to the nand, but you'll get an error as soon as you pass the health & safety screen, as you now get.

So yeah, that's what happened here: The sudoku install made you pass launcher's limit, so you're pretty much bricked. For anyone else reading this post, there's no known fix besides hardmod but there is a way to prevent this: before installing DSiWare, go on a System settings and check how many "blocks" you have left. Google your DSiWare's size in blocks, and if it exceeds the amount of blocks you hsve left then delete some DSiWare.

Also, TWLnf is an amazing tool but it's still in it's early stage, so direct Nand mount is NOT something you should be doing if you don't have a hardmod. Always, and I mean literally always, check your Nand in No$GBA first, especially if you're using a tool still under development.

We should put this in a pinned post.

What we really need to pin is a post saying "Always test your Nand in No$GBA before flashing." Most brick cases can be prevented just by testing beforehand.
That's exactly what I've been saying to everyone, the reason I bricked was also a lack of testing. Patience is a requirement.

Pretty much this. I've tried to make it as easy as possible by writing instructions on it both here and on the guide, I don't know what else to do to make it clear :(

oh damn, i knew it. bricked my dsi xl. i thought i was ok since it looked like i have 40mb free in the nand. i had sudoku, mario vs donkey kong, wario ware snapped, 4swords, camera, dsi sound, download play, dsi shop, 3ds transfer tool, pictochat, flipnote, web browser, airport mania, brain age math and arts&letters, and uno. wow, i didnt realize i had so many installed (759 blocks total. complete list here). i guess that is over 130mb, anyhow, that left me with 269 blocks. i installed a few games at the same time bringing me to this brick. i wasnt paying attention to the free space ive had along the way. definitely couldve been avoided if i had checked after each install. rather than searching and guessing, im trying to get this dsi xl hardmodded. the cost is about the same and there is no guessing. also, its the red mario edition one. i really like it. :)

i had twlnf directly mount the nand to install the dsiware. i didnt think i should dump the new nand just to check it with no$gba when id have to boot it on the dsi anyway. maybe i shouldve stuck with just injecting the game to nand.bin with ofsmount and all. its all good, ill be jamming on my gba for now.
