Hulu comes to the Nintendo Switch

IMG_5471.PNG

Releasing with hardly any fanfare or notice, the video streaming app Hulu will be soon available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. It was listed alongside the games that were to be released today by Nintendo itself, and should be downloadable once the store refreshes at 12PM ET. This marks the first video streaming service for the console, as the Nintendo Switch did not launch with any media subscription apps.

Slight incoherent rant:

While that's cool, I see the appeal of a system made solely for playing games.

The Xbox One and PS4 tried to be all-in-one media centers what with their sharing options and social media integration. However, I feel that when online functionality gets so embedded in a system and its interface, you're left with this empty home screen when offline, and often you feel like you're missing out when you decide not to use these features and just want to play the games.

Making game systems media centers is also rather redundant, as I have probably a dozen other devices from which I can watch Netflix and Hulu and browse GBATemp and whatnot. Why would I want to do it on my game system? What makes that special?

What I like about the Switch is that it's a system solely for playing games. It can be solitary, yes, but I myself kinda like that solitary feel, and I have reason to believe I'm not alone. I buy game systems not to have them as media centers, but to play games. I think Nintendo did a good job of realizing this.

That was kind of a stream-of-consciousness post, so sorry for the text wall. :P

Some people don't have smart tvs, having the option to use something already attached to your TV to stream video is nice. And since the switch is portable, you can also use it to watch stuff like a tablet. If you don't want it, just don't install the app.

but unlike the xbone/ps4, it's not forced on you. hulu, (and hopefully others soon,) is an optional download. i agree with you blank homescreen thing, but with the xbone/ps4, they had them pre-installed. the only people with it on their switch will be people who want it on their console

*cough* NicoNico *cough*
I must say though, I don't know if it is just me but Nico Nico works like shit.
Perhaps the Japanese servers don't stream at a good speed to Germany or something.
Only thing I know is my experience with NicoNico on the Switch can be described as "buffering...buffering...buffering...dies."

Of course, that is not the point anyway.

Except none of those apps are actually pre-installed on the Xbox One/PS4, they're just placeholder icons for easy access when people inevitably install them on their consoles.

As to the news, finally, though I'd rather have Netflix and Youtube first vs Hulu but hey it's a start.

And touching upon that, I still find it puzzling that when I first wanted to watch a BluRay movie, my XB1 asked me to connect to the Internet and download an app.

I've been hearing rumors about Netflix coming to the switch for a while now, so it's nice to see at least one other streaming service coming to the switch. Here's to hoping for netflix, YouTube, and many more to follow up with their own video streaming services on the switch!
