in the Digital foundry video where pc lowest settings 540p is beating the switch version from what we can see

He said "beating Switch in some areas". Also be aware of what he states towards the end.

"I'm gonna be fascinated to check out the final version of Doom on Switch because I think our broadly equivalent PC system here is gonna get owned."

He does admit that all his observations have been with undocked mode, whereas his custom-PC he's comparing those observations to are based on docked mode frequencies, so while docked mode may still be 720p, the effects and/or details may be better enhanced. He also understand that you can't really "match console TFlops" on PC to get a console-quality experience or better. I was checking out the PC's minimum requirements for Doom 2016 in 720p, and they suggest a video card far superior to what Switch can handle. Heck, the requirement was also greater than what XB1 and PS4 could output.

It is also known that the developers are not done optimizing the game, so what we see may not be indicative to the final build (which was just a preview build).

well yeah, it probably is showing an early build of the game and just let us hope it doesn't downscale itself 540p or lower like in the vid. Probably will run a bit better then the video showcasing doom ofcourse

There's being a technical achievement but frankly, it's going to be hard to convince people to pay full price for an inferior version of Doom. Portability is cool but is overrated.

COmparison tot he Vita's visual is pretty redundant considering, the Vita was five years old when the Switch was released. It would have been an achievement to not outdo the Vita.
Other than one or two outliers, Nintendo consoles have never been about power anyway, and the portable market has continued to have the highest attach rates for them. I wouldn't call it overrated at all, and apparently neither would most people, because Switch is off shelves approximately .25 seconds after it's re-stocked. PS4 and XB1 are nothing special, they're continuations of what we've seen from consoles for decades. A hybrid console is at least something new, even if it doesn't interest you personally as much.

Honestly, I am surprised how much people are prioritizing portability over graphical superiority. The portability is really not worth it, especially when the controls are going to be inferior.

Nintendo was powerful for it's time, Snes was powerfull for it's time, N64 was more powerfull, Gamecube was more powerfull then a ps2. How is Nintendo not ever been about power when they were even boasting about it back in the day during ads ? Also forgetting the famous quote from them '' Now you're playing with power''

Uhmm, joycons work as well as any controller I've ever used. They have dual analog sticks and shoulder/trigger buttons. I don't know what more you would want out of a portable controller.

Does dock add some actual performance enhancements I'm not noticing in my games? I see people here saying "Dock should least be able to play 60FPS" So I'm a bit confused. I know it can upscale game output to higher resolution depending on the game in question but to do that and improve performance. I thought the dock is just a way to play the game on tv along with access to usb ports for connectivity.

Docked increases electricity so the gpu goes up. More power.

You realize that is your opinion?
You know, I also don't like the idea of "Coffee To Go", because coffee is something to be enjoyed sitting down with a good brew.
Nevertheless, if someone prefers coffee to go because it is more practical, it's their decision.

Hahaha. Had they said they were going for a Doom 64 like respin then I might have paid some attention. Wonder how long the cast offs and appeasements will continue. If I am being optimistic I will wonder if this will be some incentive to crack motion blur and we can stop going to silly high frame rates as a workaround.

More calculations, more power and if you try doing that on a battery it will drain far faster than people find ideal (already the switch battery is a running joke and does not help notions of it being a handheld device). If you have power coming out of the wall though you can use as much as you like without worrying the battery and thus increase/stop holding back performance compared to handheld mode. Also the video is there in the switch, however there is little point in outputting 1080p video to a screen with less resolution so the dock does not do any real processing to the video.

Yeah I don't understand what people are missing here. Switch would be great on its own I'm sure, but it's the absolute perfect pick as a companion to a gaming PC and/or PS4 (Pro). As somebody who grew up with the very first Gameboy, this is not just some gimmick to me. It's fucking amazeballs that I can play brand new and semi-new AAA games on a portable.

If gen2 Switch gives us a perfect 60 FPS on all modern AAA games like people are asking for, then guess what? Box consoles are now worthless outdated tech, that's the end of the console era. I wonder if people really want that.

The portability is really not worth it, especially when the controls are going to be inferior.

As long as I can use motion controls to aim, I don't mind the reduced visuals (although I am kind-of sad that the game will only run at 30 fps, but that is to be expected). As a college student, portability is a really nice feature.

Yeah, joycons are actually controllers, Wiimotes were more like TV remotes, thus the namesake I guess.

IMO, I feel like the Wii remotes were ergonomically better than the joycons.

If you're going to ignore the Switch's main feature, the portability, then ofcourse it's simply an "inferior" version.

Add the portability back in, and it's unique.

This is not a hard concept to grasp. You CANNOT compare the Switch to anything else, because 99% of devices are deigned for either portability, or stationary play, the Switch is unique in that it can do both, and thus compromises must be made.

Go and enjoy 4k Uhd 144hz Doom on your pc, go ahead and enjoy 1080p Hd 60hz on a console, but be damned well sure to note that the Switch is doing shit that should not be possible. It might be "underpowered" when compared to powerhouse systems, but for what it is, it's near perfect.

Switch is not doing impossible tasks... it's hardware is comparable to the shield tv... hell, it is even like the shield tv...

Shit has been ported to it, and since the switch is almost like the shield tv, shit can be ported to it too, even in portable mode with its underclocked specs... it just depends on the devs.

I cant see the so called "magic" the switch is doing, other than just being portable...
