Hi guys I am running a9lh and luma3ds. I believe I am still on the old luma 6.XX version. I have tried updaitng to the latest 8.1.1 version but it doesn't update. I have recently installed metroid and monster hunter stories. metroid samus returns works perfectly but monster hunter gets stuck on the 3ds boot screen. Both were installed using CIA. Are there settings in luma upon bootup I need to change to make stories work or do I need to update the system software.

Given the above CFW I am on, is it safe to update the official nintendo system software to the latest one?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Try going to the eShop page of the game, that should download the seed key that's needed for newer games.
You'll run into that problem with newer games that haven't been cryptofixed when you use CIAs. FreeShop installs the seed automatically so if you use that instead you won't have to worry about it.
I think you can also download the seed with FBI.

Depending on what your firmware version is, it may still not work. But that's easily fixed by updating to Luma 7.0.5 then updating the firmware.
You'll probably want to look into upgrading to B9S, it doesn't take too long and is needed to run the latest Luma, but for now 7.0.5 still works with the latest 3DS firmware.

Thank you all for your advice. In terms of updaitng ot luma 7.05 how do I do it? Also do I fiest update to luma 7.0.5 and then update the system using the official nintendo update utility?

Copy the arm9loaderhax.bin over the one on your SD card. It is in the 7z archive. Either way is fine but if you update first you may get a black screen on boot until you update Luma.

I've updated luma to 7.0.5, thanks so much. Do you know what settings I should have enabled in emunand? Also is it safe for me to update to the latest 3ds firmware in the official update utility?

Hey, sorry to badger. Updated Luma. Shall I update the system software using the system utility?

just this one: Show NAND or user string in System Settings.

this will show sys for sysNAND or emu for emuNAND in system settings instead of i.e. ver 11.6.0-39.

Are you using emuNAND? Might want to consider moving your emuNAND over to sysNAND since there's not much point in emuNAND anymore. https://3ds.guide/move-emunand

Hey thanks for the advice. I have decided to move to bootstrap9. However in the instructions it doesnt clearly specify. Can I use my existing SD card? or do I need a new freshly formatted SD card?

I have a 128GB SD card which is full of games. I don't want to format it and lose all of them. Can I copy over the files to the existing one?

You can use your SD card, but the guide is very clear that you need to backup everything, because your SD card will be formatted in the process.

Hi, just sorted it all out. Monster hunter still throwing up an error. By the way, do you mean the last option which says SDcard cleanup formats the card? In which case I am glad I skipped it as it seemed pointless getting rid of the "bootstrap" and "cias" folder, if that is indeed the only thing it deletes. I used my old SD card also and just renamed old bin files in case something went awry.

Section VIII - Format SD card formats the SD card.

Have you attempted redownloading Monster Hunter Stories from another source (perhaps using Wii U USB Helper or freeShop) and trying that?

Freeshop only seems to have the japanese version of it. I downloaded a CIA and installed that using FBI. Even imported the seed for it using FBI.

Maybe I have an older version of freeshop. Is there a newer version available? and if so how can I update it please? :)

There is not American version on freeShop, but there is a European version. Are you using an American or a European 3DS?

The newest version of freeShop is here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-pauls-freeshop-fork-open-source-eshop-alternative.483159/
