can I play a backup of metroid samus returns on my 9.0 N3ds with Cakes CFW? or do I have to update?
You have to update to at least 11.2. If you're using A9LH follow https://3ds.guide/a9lh-to-b9s and if you're using menuhax then uninstall it (boot up without SD in, then put it in after it has started up, then change theme) and follow https://3ds.guide

im pretty sure im not using any of those. last time i used my 3ds was like 2 years ago.
You're probably using menuhax then - unless you boot into your emuNAND using the browser or something? If so it will do you no harm to follow the steps for menuhax (there will just be nothing to uninstall when you change themes).

If you still have the Gateway card and either Cubic Ninja or OoT to get into Gateway mode, you could use sysupdater to update to 9.0 and then install b9s using SoundHax. You have to be careful though, and use the right launcher.dat - some will brick if you use sysupdater in Gateway mode and some won't (I think the older ones are bad, and the newer ones good, but you might like to do some reading yourself to make sure).

Edit: if you have Cubic Ninja you can do this: https://3ds.guide/ntr-and-cubic-ninja (no need for Gateway).

But is it necessary to update to 9? I'd rather not take the risk.
I know in the past 8.1J used to be problematic, but is there a solution without updating system nand?
I do have a sky3ds blue button btw (I'm guessing it still works on all firmware versions?).

You can use the Sky3DS for Cubic Ninja, and do https://3ds.guide/ntr-and-cubic-ninja

I hacked my N3DS from a very old version of the guide, back when you still had to downgrade to 2.0 and going all the way to A9LH was a 100 step process that took several hours.

I have updated most of my hacks long ago by now, B9S and all that, but one thing that I never touched was the Health and Safety app. The guide had my install FBI in it's place, and I did. But now that this method is so outdated, and the version installed itself is outdated, I have been trying to revert this. Considering that I have B9S, and several NAND backups, and that modifying this app should not really touch any sensitive areas, I figured it wouldn't hurt to try.

I tried that NUS downloader to get the original hs.app, but couldn't get it to work, so I dug through my old backup and temp files I used when I first hacked my N3DS long ago and found the original hs.app I had made a backup of, and tried using Decrypt9's feature to inject into the H&S app to restore it, and it MOSTLY worked... but not completely.

My 3DS itself is still fine mind you, not bricked, official apps and homebrew still run fine, can connect online and all that, it's just that attempting to restore the original H&S app didn't fully work. When I navigate to the icon, it still shows the FBI icon on the lower screen... however, highlighting it shows the Health and Safety logo on the top screen instead of the FBI logo, and starting it starts the Health and Safety app... so only the icon on the bottom screen didn't work for some reason. Any suggestions what I can try to fix this?

It's just the icon cache that didn;t update properly, you successfully injected the original app. If it bothers you that much you can download Chtullu(sic) and clear the homemenu icon cache. It will fix it. https://gbatemp.net/threads/release...ime-step-history-and-cached-icon-data.439485/

Hey everyone! I'm definitely a noob when it comes to the 3DS but I was pretty saavy with the PSP so I have some experience with flashing and such. I modded my 3DS (the yoshi one) a few months to a year back but I've been between moves and it's kind of been gathering dust. I'd like to get more active in the scene and I feel I should start with upgrading my CFW (I believe it's Arm9loaderhax) but I don't want to start playing with things until I understand what version my 3DS and CFW are at. Any help would be much appreciated! I pretty much just want to bring everything on the system up to date and I heard freeshop is useful but I'm not sure exactly what for/how it works. I tried doing some research to find out the method for seeing my CFW version but everything I turned up had to do with whether or not the system firmware could be modded. As I already have a modded 3DS this obviously isn't helpful haha >_> anywho, if someone wouldn't mind helping me re-discover where my system is at and point me in the right direction for bringing it up to speed that would be really awesome! Thank you all for your time!

To check your 3ds system version go to system settings. It's displayed on the bottom right of the top screen. Luma version can be checked by holding select on boot. Freeshop can be used to pirate games directly on your 3ds. To update from a9lh to b9s: https://3ds.guide/a9lh-to-b9s

So, I'm considering installing a CFW. I've poked around the guides and it generally looks fairly simple. Looks like I can use a flashcart on my New 3DS XL on 11.6? I currently use Homebrew through Ninjhax mostly for save file editing.

I'm super lazy and download all games these days. I don't have any carts, so I keep Ninjhax in the cart slot. Well, I'm at a point where I want to transfer all my DS games to a flashcart and keep that in the slot... thus my motivation for installing a CFW... so I'll always have access to HBL. One question that hasn't been explicitly answered (that I could find) was will installing a CFW wipe all my existing game data? Or will it be enough to backup the 3DS folder on the SD card and then just restore it when I'm done?

You'll keep all your data.

I’m getting kind of scared from the Nintendo threat saying once you update, you’ll “likely” make your system unplayable. I’m being stupid, but I’m questioning if I should keep CFW or not. I’m still waiting for it to be super safe but it’s pretty scary. Should I get rid of CFW or keep it? Also, if I were to update and my system was unplayable, would GodMode9 help me restore a backup?
