My "new" 3DS XL has version 11.1.0-34E, my flash cart is R4i 3DS gold (without RTS).
Yeah. So follow 3ds.guide. When you get to the choose firmware you can choose the Soundhax or ntrboot. They both get you to the same result through different way. The Soundhax method doesn't require a flashcart, but as you already have it it's probably easier to just do it the ntrboot way.

You're fine to update (you might like to update to Luma 7.0.5 first), you can follow https://3ds.guide/a9lh-to-b9s later on if you wish.

Thanks for the advice. You're actually the one who help me set this up way back when, haha. This is just the first time I've been pushed to do an update.

So I'll do it in 3Ds-Settings now.

Hi guys, I've been out of the loop for quite a while, since I can't use Gateway anymore on latest firmware, what is the best solution now for a 8.1 jp n3ds (no Internet browser installed)?

I am at finalizing-setup I did everything on the part where it says to copy all those files on my SD card. But I am now at that part that tells me to update my device? should I do this?

If you still have the Gateway card and either Cubic Ninja or OoT to get into Gateway mode, you could use sysupdater to update to 9.0 and then install b9s using SoundHax. You have to be careful though, and use the right launcher.dat - some will brick if you use sysupdater in Gateway mode and some won't (I think the older ones are bad, and the newer ones good, but you might like to do some reading yourself to make sure).

Edit: if you have Cubic Ninja you can do this: https://3ds.guide/ntr-and-cubic-ninja (no need for Gateway).

you find .cia files and install them via fbi (they appear as normal eshop games) . . . of get the freeshop (eshop clone) homebrew and pirate directly on your console
emulators etc?
homebrew can be in cia format (in this case see the above) or 3dsx if 3dsx you load via rosalina

Install them as cias using FBI. For 3DS games have a look at freeShop (see mini guide in OP of this thread).

Thanks a lot! I seem to be able to use my R4 now too after installing everything from 3ds.guide. Is it possible too to run 3ds rom backups on it too?
