Switch is 1080p@60 FPS max, which was chosen over the ability to do 4K@30 FPS. I'm glad they went with that over the other option: 4K@30 video, but 1080p@30 max for games. Obviously Switch's screen isn't 4K, and most people still don't have 4K TVs. Also, Switch is gaming-focused.

I don't "need" Netflix on Switch, that doesn't mean I'd mind having it available there. Streaming was always going to come later.
That's not how it works, they can do both 4K@30hz and 1080p@60hz, it's just a bandwidth limitation that limits it to 30fps at 4K.

4K streaming or are the Switch docks locked to 1080p? We all know that the Tegra used in the Switch is more than capable of 4K video playing.
You need the HDMI 2.0 straight out of the board. The current usb-c controller is not capable of supporting HDMI 2.0 or DP 1.2.
Edit: Sorry, wrong quote.

That's not how it works with Shield, but that's how it works with Switch. It's not capable of 4K output, they were given the option. Decisions had to be made based on the portable nature of it.

:the switch screen runs at a max of 720p to save battery while gaming:

"Yay, awesome, BOTW looks awesome, we love it"

:Netflix seems like it will be released for switch soon:

"Nintendo is stupid for only making the screen max be 720p, things look horrible"

What will we complain about next...

Just give me the stupid internet browser Nintendo, for fuck's sake.
Enough with your motherfucking exploit paranoia, you will get your ass hacked either way.

With the internet browser I could get around the lack of games I care about for the console. XD

Nintendo may have forgone the browser likely because the Wii U had a massive exploit, at least, maybe. Still, Nintendo needs to stop being pansies about having a browser.

Don't forget the 3DS too, that one had a shit-ton of browsers exploits too.
Thing is, no matter how much effort they put into it, or how many apps they hold off from us, they will get their asses hacked either way.
Might as well just drop the applications you are holding Nintendo, give us that browser and Youtube already, stop being pussies about exploits.

So to get this correct, the USB-C part of the Switch is what's keeping it from outputting in 4K for movies? Of that's the case then that really sucks!

Figured as much. Japan got its first streaming app for the Switch not long ago. And Reggie said the Switch would get streaming apps in time. It was never really a question of if to me, but rather when. And its still a question of when. I hope its soon, but really all I need is Netflix and Youtube on the Switch, and that's all I'll want for streaming on the Switch, though I'm sure Hulu and Amazon will come as well, and maybe HBO Go, though I wouldn't say that one is a guarantee like the others.

No, it doesn't have anything to do with the USB-C, I believe it's the encoder/decoder being used and the hardware behind that. I could be wrong, but regardless Switch ends up being more gaming-focused, where I'd say Shield is the better device for (home) streaming. Android sucks for gaming though.

I seriously doubt I'd notice much of a difference if the Switch's screen was 1080p and not 720p on the go. Its too small of a screen for something like that to make a big difference.

Here's the thing though, it's not paranoia when someone is ACTUALLY out to get you.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

The hardware itself can WELL output 4k video. 4k gaming, we'll never ever get on the Switch, but 4k video should easily be doable by the Device+Dock.

There is no need for a Switch browser. Period. Just like there is no need for an Xbox Browser or a PS4 Browser (don't know if they have one). Having an internet browser on a console really makes no sense, because in any scenario when you could use a browser on a console, you would be able to use a phone or (less likely) a computer. If you are putting down the Switch for not having an internet browser you are really just covering up your other problems which may not be as severe as you would like them to be.

We'll see. That looks more like a specs sheet for Shield, though.

EDIT: Nevermind, your sheet is for Switch, but it also verifies what I was saying. "60 FPS, at a maximum of 1920x1080 pixels, OR 30 FPS at 3840x2160 pixels." Next to Video Output. Then shows that they chose the former for "functionality available from the application." The decoder is capable of 4K, but the max output is 1080p.
