Iv'e had softmodded wii's multiple times throughout the years but it's been awhile since I had one. Can you still softmod them no matter what the firmware is? i'm thinking of picking up a used one tomorrow but wasn't sure if they weren't hackable or missing features if on a certain firmware.

Also another thing I should mention is that I already have a modded wii U. I also have HBC on the wii mode as well and my goal is to just play gamecube and wii backups with a backup launcher like I had before..

Can I do this on wii U mode? the biggest issue being that I can't use my 500GB HDD because if I try to move it back to PC then it will ask for a reformat. Can I simply use my other external HDD I have and use that to keep my backups on? like as of now i'm using my SD card for gamecube games but i'd really rather have an HDD which is why I considered buying a wii to begin with because that way I won't have to format anything/not sure if I will have to format my other drive just to play wii/gamecube games on my wii U's wii mode

tl;dr: I wanna play gamecube and wii backups but I only have a modded wii U and don't want to reformat so I was wondering if it's just better to get a wii and mod that instead for wii and GCN backups.

I am pretty sure you can still mod them no matter what the firmware, because I am pretty sure there is no new firmware, as Nintendo stopped supporting Wii some time ago. The latest firmware right now is 4.3, and I softmodded my wii on 4.3u, so I believe it's fine. As for playing wii and gamecube backups, I am sure you can play it on another external hard drive ( I have played on a few different hard drives before on my Wii), but since I don't have a Wii U, I can't properly answer your question on wii u. Sorry about that...

Is the 500GB currently for Wii U mode or vWii?

In theory, you could do most of what you want in some way on the Wii U, subject to compatibility.

pretty much. I transfer backups from an SD card to that HDD. Really ticked me off to because it was my multi drive and had to buy another because there's no point in trying to use it on my PC if i'm gonna have to reformat and then do it again on wii U.

So I now have a 1TB external and that's why I was wondering like if I wanted to use the wii mode of wii U will it function just like a wii? because I don't ever remember having to reformat my drive for the wii. And if not and I still need to format(thus basically making it just like my 500GB only which is now strictly for wii U games :/ ) if not then that's why I wonder if just buying a wii would be easier so I can still use my drive for other things because I remember having a softmodded wii for years and I could keep my backups and files ect, and didn't have to reformat everytime I moved :/

The Wii U uses it's own FS, but with vWii/Wii you can use regular FAT32.

The only real difference I'm aware of with the Wii vs vWii is that the former is better for GC games as it has the built in ports (never used nintendont myself).

Personally, I'd try vWii first to see if it does what you want then buy a Wii.

That said, you will get an annoying prompt on the Wii U mode unless you try an old trick which 'hides' the drive (AFAIK).

The alternative is not having a Vwii hard drive at all, and putting GC isos on SD and injecting Wii isos to enhanced vwii games (which install to the WiiU drive)
