Wanted to check in on th is as well to be clear. I have a firmware 2.3.0 which has never been connected to the internet.

Minus the firmware version because it seems like that is still unknown at the time.

If I change the system time to 7/11 should it work? Or does the time from the initial system set up get stored to the system file that can't be over written?

If you did a cart update, I think you should be good. If Nintendo updated the firmware for you (as in, you bought the Switch and it is preloaded with firmware v2.0.0 and/or above), you're screwed until next year.

Thanks for the reply. It came with 2.3 so it looks like I'm out of the game.

I wonder if this was supposed to remain hidden until a year or two down the road Nintendo would make an announcement for everyone to do this secret gesture on this day to honor the memory of Iwata and it's now the surprise is ruined.

Why? Do newer firmwares have their date already stored?

Why wait though? Wouldn't they have said so this past July? All the employees who knew probably did it then.

Perhaps wait for a 5 year anniversary, wait until supply evens out so everyone can enjoy the Easter egg, or just throw it out there years later just as a haha this has been hidden all this time.

The cached date is generated if:

a) Your Switch is connected to the Internet.
b) Switch can connect to the Nintendo servers.

Since you are doing a cart update, it will definitely not go through b). As for a), I don't know DNS spoofers would work...

Switch firmware updates are generally (and obviously) stored on a content distribution network (CDN). So it's far more easier and practical to connect the Switch to the CDN, so all firmware updates are consistent throughout. Less hassle, least issue with firmware bricking the hardware, etc.

Actually, it's chinese
Jein...
It depends, if it is the "language with the most native speakers", the first place goes to Chinese, second goes to Spanish, and English comes third.
If it is about "the language that most people can speak (including as a second language)", English comes first easily.

I suppose so. But nobody has found a dedicated clock battery. They wouldn't run the Switch's battery the whole time it's sitting in stores just for the clock, would they?

Can you not use airplane mode to trick the system?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Btw the reason that I thought that I discovered it on July 19 was because that was in my search history and it's the furthest back that it goes which includes those search terms. I'll check other devices just incase.

THE MORE YOU KNOW.... :creep:

If you have a Switch v1.0.0, and the date is set, your problem is your Joycons.
  • Do this update on another available Switch, and then update the Joycons from there.
  • Motion Gesture is key.
