I love RPG's, but only of the turn based variety. Anyone care to recommend some good turn by turn RPG's on the PSone, PSP, GBA, SNES or Genesis? Thanks.

PS: Would be interested in Gamecube turn based RPG's too if they have five star Dolphin compatibility (aka minimal to no glitches). Tried playing a game on Dolphin that had less than five star compatibility and the glitching was too much to deal with.

Since you mentioned Dolphin, you may want to have a look at Arc Rise Fantasia (Wii). I haven't played it too much but it seems pretty good, probably will want to get the undub version though as the dub is possibly the worst one of any game I have played.
It seems like a lesser known Wii game, so you may not have heard of it before.

- Every Final Fantasy game up to X is great, even 8 is pretty good. Play the remakes of 3 and 4 if you can, they did a good job with the remakes. FF4 After Years has a 3D remake as well I believe.
- Golden Sun series, I have only beaten the DS one but they're all great.
- Breath of Fire series, only played the first two but they were great.
- Chrono Trigger
- Earthbound/Mother series.
- Mario & Luigi series. Mostly great games, I didn't care much for the last one on 3DS though.
- Super Mario RPG

And some I haven't played at all, but have been meaning to:
- Legend of Dragoon PSX
- Legend of Legaia PSX
- Lunar 1-2 PSX

You didn't mention 360, but I have to mention it because it's one of my favorite JRPGs: Blue Dragon. It closely resembles the gameplay of the classic FF games, but with some twists, and it's great. They even Nobuo Uematsu to do some of the soundtrack. If you ever get the chance to play it, do so.

On the Sega Mega Drive, i recommend the Phantasy Star Series.

Loved the Lunar series and its simple battle system. First was definitely better than the second. I played it via the PSP remake.

Also as a long time Mario fan I loved Mario RPG. But my goodness.....that final boss battle is tough. Tried playing it two different times and still haven't beaten it.

I shall try Breath of Fire soon too.

Never played a Persona game but I've heard very good things about the series. Are any of the games related? Or can they be played separately? Same question with Phantasy Star.

Also are battles in either series able to be avoided. Or are they totally random and unavoidable (a la Pokemon).

The main line persona games are all standalone meaning they are not connected story wise. However the persona series does have spinoff games that relate to past games though.

oh and yes the battles can be avoided in all the persona games and in persona 3/4&5 you can see your enemies and thus choose whether or not you want to fight them.

oh and regarding phantsy star They are, for the most part, not that heavily linked, each taking place 1000 years apart. The heroes of the past are referenced as such, but little in the way of plot spoilers run from game to game.
