We already have the kernel AND the TrustZone code or whatever it is..
if they keep up the speed and they'll be finished in 3 months max.
We don't have shit.

A small group of very talented devs, many of whom have a track record for not releasing things publicly (as is their right), are making great strides in documenting the internals of the Switch. Mostly for fun, for the challenge, and for an eventual future homebrew scene.

Their achieving those milestones are not an indicator of when we'll have public switch homebrew. Get comfortable, it's at least a couple of years away.

That said, I wouldn't rule out a brilliant, yet childish, attention whore releasing or leaking something within the next 12 months. Every scene has one. Sigh.
You do not know when, so stop saying not this year.
Stop saying stop saying not this year! :creep:

Let's wait until someone who's in a better position to know the situation can comment. Oh look, here comes someone now...
Probably not, no.

There was the same amount of early progress with the 3DS as well and we didn't see much come out of it for a very long time. Early progress does not equate homebrew, there's still tons of work, testing, etc. that needs to made.
Honestly I suggest people just enjoy their systems and wait it out. Homebrew will happen, just don't expect it any time soon.

To expand on this even better..

They DUMPED the kernel, There's no kernel access at all yet, no ability to execute code except for webkit stuff (which is basically hosting a website that you visit), After finding a proper exploit we'd still need to circumvent the ARM TrustZone which is another wall to crack. Stuff is not as easy as the Wii or the 3DS where all that is needed is some buffer overflow. There's proper security measures in place this time, it's the same reason why the Xbone or PS4 isn't cracked yet after I don't know how many years its been already...

----

Also there's no ETA on homebrew or whatever because who knows what we will find, we (read: the hackers) could find an exploit in the next hour, they could also be searching for atleast another year. That's why theres no ETA for any of this.. Because it all comes down to luck and smart thoughts.

i hacked my switch, it plays 3ds and vita backups now.

but no switch backups.

jokes aside, i think it is too soon for homebrew, i will keep my switch updated because i play MK/SPlatoon at times.
and when the time comes, i will try to sell my switch and get a new one on a hackable fw.

i had a good friend of mine get me a n3ds xl on hackable fw when i needed one some year ago , he just went to the store and turned on the system there checked fw before buying, then i just bought it off from him, ordered it because he's from canada and i am from Kurdistan (northern iraq).

the moment i see that there is stuff like custom theming/some browser/maybe some type of overclocking of cpu app/video player comes out , that is when i will try to get a hackable switch.
