Hi,

I have a hacked Wii U but it is an old hack and I want to update the hack to the latest version. I plan to use the Noob guide by Kafluke and end up with online gaming etc.

My first question is what size / speed / type of SD card is recommended? I have my backup games on an external HD.

Thanks in advance!

You could use your hdd for your games. If you can acces the homebrew launcher, you are up to date. there is no newer hack. Istall Haxchi usning a compatible eshop game you have TO BUY FIRST.
Or install coldboot haxchi if you are feeling bold. And install the the homebrewlauncher channel using wup installer.
Using the homebrew launcher use wup installer for usb installs and full online play etc.
Note that you will have to format your hdd using your WiiU hdd format option.

Sorry I am confused? I was going to use HaxChi and a CFW.. In fact the main reason I am doing this is for online play and peace of mind.

I don't mind buying a game. I bought Super Smash Bros for Wii U to hack the Wii U. My HDD is already formatted for the Wii U. I have have HBL and also hacked vWII. Ill get the WiiU format version soon - when the TV is free.

(I enjoying hacking and generally messing around with consoles. I am happy to pay for software!)

I am on 5.3.2E

Pros and cons:
  • Loadiine GX2: Great menu system for games. Will play almost every game with updates and DLC and injected VC titles. Cons include things like it taking a few extra taps to get into. It will not allow online play and sometimes games run slow.

versus:

"Using the homebrew launcher use wup installer for usb installs and full online play etc."

I am really confused now. Can I use Loadiine for online play? I just want the most flexible, reliable hack there is at the moment...

Looking at my setup - I think my Wii U back up games are on a SD card and the usb HDD is for the vWii...

Any help or guidance would be most welcome. I think I want CBHC (just need to work out what that is!)

If your Wii U games are on your SD card then Loadiine is your only option (unless you use an SD card to USB adapter), but you won't be able to play those games online.
Loadiine is better for injected VC games, while wupinstaller is better for regular games.

CBHC is a bit risky to install, you could just use regular Haxchi instead if you don't mind opening it manually.

I was hoping to end with a similar situation that my 3ds is in. Hacked and able to update and play online etc without me needing to stay fully up to date with everything.

I thought I could do the same with my WiiU but now I am not sure at all. Maybe what I have is ok...? but I think at the moment if the dns hack stops then the system could update itself and online play is a no no. The 3ds solution seems so robust but the WiiU seems really flakey (or maybe that is just my lack of understanding!)

Oh - just because my games etc are on a SD that doesn't mean I wouldn't move them to a USB HDD. I am happy to do whatever - just want it up to date and as stable as possible.

You can use a redNAND just like on a 3DS, then delete your connection settings from sysNAND. Alternatively, you could delete a folder from sysNAND to prevent the console from downloading updates, but it's a bit risky.

You'd have to format your HDD and install them in wup format.

why are you sugestin rednand? is the worst advice i ever saw rednand is awnful and corruts easily and 100% not needed at all unless you are a dve and plant o mess with system files for experimenting...

OP if you want the latest fw and start backups on usb and have homebrew and sigpatches on boot and everything do this buy a compatible ds game on e shop for CBHC.
install cbhc, then install the homebrew lanucher channel, theny ou can isntall any game with wup isntaller, be on latest ofw and download updates and play online.

FORGET loadiine and anything related to it, its a very outdated method witch has no beneficts since huge load times on games, compatibility issues and no online.

ok.

So if I wanted to play online and have an easy post hack life what am I aiming for? redNAND - CBHC - Loadiine?

Can my vWii and WiiU access the same HD - which is already formatted for the wii (it has to be, right?, inorder to be used for the vWii?) or will I need two USB HDD?

It does not get corrupted easily if you use a good SD card, though it will die eventually. If it happens, you can restore a backup to a new SD.

forget rednand and loaddine.

just get cbhc(you need an official compatible ds game download from e shop if you install a fake ds game and cbhc it will brick, you have to actualy purchase it, i recomned brain training which is the cheapest and you might even get it for free since old wiiu accounts in europe got it for free just check e shop and click buy continue to see if its 0 euros or punds in your case)
after you install cbhc install the homebrew launcher channel, then you can just isntall any game using wup installer mod y on sysnand or your wiiu dedicated hdd.

he just wants to play games and online why is rednand even a recomendation? it brings no benefics to what he wants at all, just more touble if he was planning on developing an app thens sure but he is not a dev so rednand has zero advantages for him ...

It's up to him. redNAND has its advantages, such as increasing the lifespan of the real flash memory, having separate connection settings and it also keeps the original NAND clean (no fake tickets). You an also update it manually while keeping your sysNAND at its current version. It requires a good and big SD card and occasional backups, though.

As I said, he could also block system updates permanently by removing a folder (though he could just update after installing Haxchi).

Before removing that folder or installing CHBC, I highly recommend making a NAND backup.

Also Haxchi must be installed before installing CBHC.

It would be simpler to disable automatic updates, install Haxchi and update the firmware to 5.5.2. (possibly after making a NAND backup).

Thanks for showing me the two main options.

I am going to go down the CHBC route.

I was thinking of removing my SD card and HDD and putting to them to one side and starting fresh with a new SD card - doing the hacks and then hopefully using my old HDD and SD or at least some of the info on them.

Can I put in a new SD card and follow the Noob guide and end up with a hacked system that (all going well) I could just put back the old SD and HDD and it would work as it does now? Or by doing the CBHC hack etc am I putting my existing hack/ setup to bed forever? Some of the games I have particularly on the vWii but also the WiiU have some old massive saves/ games / mii's etc that I would hate to loose...

Your vWii saves won't be lost, though your Loadiine saves will need to be injected if you want to use them after reinstalling your games to the HDD. Also, you will still be able to use Loadiine to play your games from SD card (but again, you won't be able to play online).

Just follow the instructions very carefully and everything will be alright!

Thanks!

My USB HDD was actually used when I hacked my Wii years ago, I was able to use it (and more importantly the info on it) for my vWii. So many hours of fun in there!

I have now realised that my OP was incorrect. To be clear my HDD is for the vWii and the SD card is for my Loadiine WiiU games etc.

There's a simple flow chart in my noob guide that will help you decide what will work best for you. One size does not fit all.

(Although I never recommend redNAND for any user. If you're the type of person who wants redNAND then you should be smart enough to figure it out on your own. If you can't then you shouldn't be using it)

Careful, though...
The same HDD cannot be used for Wii U games. If you format it from the Wii U menu, you will lose everything on it. Wii games use the Wii's internal memory for save data, so your saves should be safe if you do format it.
If you want to use a separate HDD for vWii, you should use UStealth to hide it from the Wii U menu.
You can also copy your Wii games to your SD card and play them using CFW USB loader.

Thanks Kafluke your guide is great - I am one of those people who can confuse themselves very easily.

I am not doing anything redNAND related.

Yes, now I remember using UStealth.

I think I ought to be able to achieve what I hope to do! Sadly I have thought this in the past and overlooked one small thing...
