Shit. Reading some people's opinion here, some would say that I am not a gamer.

Here's my situation:
I play my ps4 maybe once or twice a week. There would be a few weeks where I do not play it at all.

Doesn't sound very gamey, does it?

BUT

Everyday I visit multiple game sites, including this site. I watch multiple YouTube videos /vlogs on games many times a week.

I purchase and buy many retro consoles (see picture) and have modded nearly all of them with various emulators and 1000s and 1000s of roms. I've got on order right now stuff for my ps2, so I can put games on a hdd (will I play them? Maybe for 5min. I just like to know I have them if/when I would like to play them)

Do I play them? Yaah sometimes. If one of the consoles in the picture below gets turned on once a year, that's pretty average.

Is the actual lack of gaming because I don't want to game? No. I have commitments. Full time work with work I have to bring home with me. A wife. A kid. Dogs. Housewor.

When I was a kid/ uni, fuck yeah, I gamed the shit out of those consoles. But now..... I can only game so much.

I'm interested to know. Am I still a gamer???

why is your safe search on strict. lol

really though, a gamer should be someone who is well-educated and appreciative of the gaming industry of the past and present. no point calling yourself a gamer when you hate modern era, I suppose.

Even by my harsh standards, I'd say you are a gamer. You may not invest a lot of time into gaming, but you clearly show a passion for it beyond what a normal person would.

You're a gamer if you're enjoying any sort of games, no matter what difficulty, no matter if it's just simple gem swapping or massive Hack'n'Slash.
Don't let others decide what you are, be the one to decide who you are.

Why are people so obsessed with this gamer identity? It's just something to do in your free time. I really can't fathom why some people are so utterly "proud to be gamers".
Somewhere in the world, there is someone who is proud of a cool rock he found. People are proud of stupid shit. It may not seem important to you, but everyone has their own idea of what matters to them. For me, its more the identity than being proud of the title. If someone tells me that they are a gamer, I already know they share a passion for the same hobby as me. I wouldn't really say I'm obsessed with the term, just discussing what qualifies someone for the title in my opinion. As a good portion of people here have already said, it doesn't really matter in the end.

Eh. I suppose people need something to feel proud about and exclude others from.

Anyways, I know it's been iterated enough times, but if you play video games and enjoy them, you are a gamer. Fancy earbuds, decked-out controllers, or other gaming merch companies try to sell you on does not a gamer make.

I think thats what they call "nintendo gamers"...
Btw op, there are bunch of good games in the style of nintendo games, for pc. Try them out from time to time... I think you will like them. Dont throw every game for the biggest platform ever just because it aint nintendo...
Anyways, I hate the word "gamer". Why do people call me by one of my hobbies, even tho nowdays I barely spend a couple of hourse a week on it? Do people call the ones who read a book "a Booker"? Wtf. I dont find it offensive but plain stupid....
So "gamer" is a broken term used to describe people who enjoy playing games.
Wait, who DOESNT nowdays?
Ah right, I forgot to add "..on dedicated hardware"
Shit, that doesnt include pc...
Ok, then add "... or pc"
You see what I mean? And I can continue...

I always saw myself as a gamer and most of my life I didnt have reliable access to a computer (let alone a gaming pc) and I played on gb/c/a (and the like) emulators and/or hardware..in the last few years I fell in love with dwarf fortress, a game that 90% of the gamers dont know of, and most of the ones that do- dont play because its so hard. And its the main game I spend time on. On an average laptop from 5 yrs ago. Am I a gamer? I think yes. I dont have a gaming pc, fancy controllers/mouse and I hate fps. So what? Are people who hate a certain type of games - not gamers, just because its a popular type?

Trouble is we would have to qualify what era that might be.
NES and SNES was rather different to the N64 (see also terms like Nintendo hard), and whatever nonsense has happened since has been rather different from when they were one of the industry leaders. You might be able to shift focus a bit as they were still leading the industry up until the 3ds if you want to look at the handhelds.

Reading books does not make you a booker, probably does make you a reader though ("I am something of a reader" being how someone might describe themselves). Just one of those quirks of the English language, and just to confuse matters further a reader is a title within various UK (and some former commonwealth) universities.

What is wrong with being associated with your hobbies? Would you rather be called by your job, your family, a religion if you have one?

if *reading* books makes you a *reader*, then *playing* games makes you a *player*. ah right, this is a real word....

the thing thats wrong with being called a gamer is that 1. more then 70% of people play games on a regular basis and because of some reason many say Im a gamer and some 10-year-old I know isn't, while he plays twice as much as me, and 2. the fact I like playing games doesnt affect my life as much as, say, a job, a family or a religion woul've

I think it's a problem in English, in French and German too where there is only one verb for three Italian verbs: giocare (to play a game), suonare (to play an instrument) and recitare (to play a drama).
Maybe you, in English, use "player" to mean someone who plays just for fun (obvious: you HAVE TO play for fun or it is not 'play') and "gamer" for a "professional player" with a powerful PC, professional headphones, microphone and webcam...
You are un giocatore (one who plays games: player, joueur, Spieler) because you play, even if you have only a GameBoy or a 200€-PC.
It's a language fault...

Alas English is not quite so logical, I did try to consider a rule of thumb but felt it pointless.
It is a pastime that has taken to the world stage, and why not. To that end where playing games 20 or 30 years ago might have seen you belong to a smaller grouping today it may well be as you say and be 70%.
Yet if I work down the corner shop, disown my parents (though I was more thinking historically where your father's name meant something) and only do religion on the big winter and spring festival (Christmas and Easter if we are going to do Christianity) because of tradition/by default in society. All groupings are prone to problems, it is a known problem for all that engage in such activities to any real degree.

While I would agree it may be worth considering either additional terms or things to append I am not sure your example works so well -- in French you have the faire and jouer (to do and to play) with their own quirks in French (never mind translating into it), English to is not without it (one does not tend to play skateboarding as much as go skateboarding, this despite it also being a sport). Equally one can perform a play or act out a play/drama, perform a musical recitation. I don't speak German but I can't imagine it is any different.

""professional player" with a powerful PC, professional headphones, microphone and webcam..."
Not a great line for me to draw -- these days quake 3 can probably be run on a machine I find on the street and is perfectly able to see me do crazy things like memorise maps, lines through them, weapon spread patterns, weapon types/locations, and not that it matters but also see me need to react as quickly as humanly possible... actually starcraft is probably an even better choice
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=1863&game=StarCraft
I am pretty sure my fridge has more processing than that these days, yet these days it is a sport by most accounts.

Alas the main times anybody really tried it was with hardcore gamer (urgh) and AAA games which I am not sure even means anything.
