With the upcoming release of Metroid: Samus Returns, it seems like the once-abandoned series is coming back into the spotlight, in the form of a limited edition New 3DS XL. It'll be hitting store shelves at "limited retailers" on September 15th.

Nintendo is perfectly capable of patting their head and rubbing their tummy -- at the same time!

This won't have any affect on snes or switch production.
Well, the factory producing those 3ds could have been used to produce switch to make it less rare

"Yeah lets shift tiny little specialty plant foxconn into switch-only mode. 100K new3ds's are too much of a burden for them"

Switch/new3ds share zero parts anyway. They have no effect on one another.

Who knows, we might see a pair of game you can play together, one on 3ds, one on switch, like smash 3ds wîi u

I am sure they share some caps and resisters.

Nintendo is going to keep with the 3ds line till it stops selling, plus this is for Metroid fans and collectors, also they can do Metroid themed Joycons when Metroid Prime 4 comes around, this system is for Metroid 2 remake, they weren't going to make joycons for a game that's on the 3ds and not Switch, there saving that for Metroid Prime 4.

Also you didn't really think Nintendo would stop the 3ds manufacturing, did you? It's still selling.
