You can change the region, but there's been no reports of a successful system transfer using a region changed system.

You need a DS flashcart, you can't play DS games on a 3DS flashcart. If you have a Gateway anyway it probably came with a blue cartridge, this is a DS flashcart and you can play DS games with it. However it will only work under 7.x firmware unless you use a CFW.

So theres a "data" folder in my "3ds" folder which actually shows up in homebrew as "data" lol. Now in this data folder are 2 folders: cthulu and freeshop. Is this normal? Should this 'data' folder be in my "3ds" folder?

can i buy a (old)2ds and put CFW on it and system transfer to NEW 2DSXL for CFW like from 3ds.guide ?
But, my real question is can I still play game backups from the soundhax hack on 11.0 firm or is it homebrew only?

SoundHax is for homebrew only, and you only use it temporarily to install CFW. Once you have CFW you can install stuff directly to your home menu and you won't be using the homebrew menu again except if there is a homebrew that isn't released in cia form (so you can install it).

I have seen that new 2ds xl comes with 11.4 firmware I would like to be able to put free games for my bro on it do you know if really n2dsxl comes with 11.4? should I buy him the regular 2ds instead? is it possible to get cfw kernel and something like priiloader on firmware 11.4? I have never had a 3ds I see some stuff but i am afraid everything is outdated on the 3dsguide site it doesn't say anything on n2dsxl section on 11.4 fw I am only experienced with wii / vwii / wiiu homebrew stuff

Yes, the N2DSXL comes on 11.4 and you'll need a second console on CFW already or hardmod to install CFW on it. See https://3ds.guide. It's up to date.

oh I see and I need to purchase a game (on that 3ds with cfw) to do it right? and if required to update to 11.5 or it isn't needed? maybe I could borrow a o3ds that I think has older fw but if I do a 3ds transfer how will I get everything back to my friend's 3ds ?

In the middle of last year I installed Luma on my N3DS. I haven't updated it for a very long time now. A few months ago I remember reading an article about a new 3DS hack that changes something in all custom firmwares. Because of this there are a few extra steps for me to follow next time I update.

So how do I safely update?

You only need it on the system that already has cfw

You can't transfer the NNID back to the old 3DS so it will be stuck permanently on the N2DSXL. Unless you call Nintendo and agree to move it back. You can get your data back by restoring a NAND backup after the transfer (as the guide tells you to). Just make sure to follow the guide 100%.

if they link it back to the old 3ds I can restore data from the back up with no problem I guess right? but if they won't link it back then there is problem restoring the data and creating a new nnid for my friend? if they link it back to the old 3ds I can restore data from the back up with no problem I guess right? but if they won't link it back then there is problem restoring the data and creating a new nnid for my friend? I am just asking coz if data is linked with the nnid then there should be problem if that nnid isn't on the old 3ds..

You can always make a new NNID (just format and make a new one) and the CFW console can always recover the data (restore NAND backup and SD card contents).

Can anyone give me some clarity on system transfers? I have a hacked 2ds, on 11.5, bs9. I'm getting a n3ds today, it has 11.0 on it. I want to xfer from 2ds to n3ds because I don't feel like calling nintendo to unlink me. Should I hack the n3ds first, get it up to 11.5, then system xfer? I ASSUME this is what I have to do, as I have ASSUMED you cannot simply "transfer the hack", if that makes sense. Either way, my main concern is making sure that I get the n3ds hacked before doing any updates do it. If you all think its easier to just set up n3ds on its on and call nintendo, i'll do that route as in my noob state it's the more sure bet. But figured I'd try and get some guidance.

@Geoffries Yea hack your new 3ds first after that do a system transfer. I would backup everything on your 2ds before doing system transfer. You won't need to contact Nintendo since your system transfer will unlink your niid from your 2ds. Do a pc system transfer A WAY lot faster than doing wireless transfer if you have a lot of stuff.
