Nor did it happen with the Vita, which also struggled way before any hacks surfaced that haven't been achieved on the PSP before and didn't affect Vita games at all. I guess you can't just link sales to piracy. If there are not enough interesting games to pirate, it wouldn't matter if the console is shut tight or hacked wide open.

But to support the point that piracy does at least not kill off consoles, I want to point to the PSP, the DS, the Wii and the 3DS. All did well after piracy being easy to achieve.
Wii certainly had trouble getting third party software later in its life.
Also the Dreamcast was a compromised from the get-go, piracy was rampant, and Sega dropped out of the console market altogether.

SEGA just ran out of money. 32X was a big mistake, and so is Saturn marketing. They even thought about using DVD-ROM discs instead of GD-ROM, but the technology was too expensive for them.
I don't think that piracy is the main reason the Dreamcast failed. After all, it was a pretty popular console at launch, and had a lot of third-party support until PS2 combined with the lack of money to push the Dreamcast further basically ruined everything for SEGA.

Honestly, I just care about save editing for BOTW and MK8D. Piracy would never exist on Switch and I wouldn't care. If it did however, it would be directly linked to CFW so I probably pirate because it being available. Don't worry though, the games mention above I have paid for. Obviously because piracy doesn't exist.

keep your votes coming in on this thread, everyone counts! there's some strong love on this thread, that's how I like to see it, peaceful and meaningful! remember just because the thread is in the "hacking & homebrew" section don't feel compelled at all to click on "yes" I just thought it was best putting it in this section for maximum results feel free to put "no" if you wish and be honest.

I want a strong Nintendo.
I want lots of SMG releases in the future. I want 3rd party support.

So I hope the switch avoids hacking for 5+ years.

nonsense.

A hack only is a good thing. the original DS was extremely easy to pirate games on with R4, which lots of people had. The 3DS was not easy to hack and flashcards were not easily used. But if you look at the sales of both consoles, the original DS was far more successful, as were the sales of the original DS games (at least twice as many sales, maybe even 3 times).

The best selling non handheld nintendo console is the original wii, which was hacked within 6 months of release.

i want it hacked at the end of its lifespan, its to early now,i hope some third party games coming, but i'm affraid when its hacked now its wiiu situation again.

You mean the Wii U that failed miserably on its own, before it was 'hacked' with the awful loadiine, and it wasn't until october 2016 (a full 4 years after the release of the console) that proper brazilian usb loading came out?

The Wii U would probably have done better, if it had a hack right away. Hacks drive better sales of the console, better sales of the console drive 3rd party devs to make games, 3rd party games make more people buy the console, so on and so forth.

I don't know what you people are smoking with this "hack = console will fail" nonsense.

The success of the Wii will not be repeated.
Times have changed.

There are alot of great titles that haven't seen a Nintendo console in many moons.

Strong console sales and a stable non-hacked platform will bring more and more third party apps.

People like the GBAtemp crowd that are more likely to buy consoles represent 1% of sales. You are extrapolating your purchasing behaviour to your average console buyer.

The WiiU was a colossal failed concept. It was destined to fail because it was a stupid idea. Add in Crappy implementation and it was an epic fail.

ffs it was poor advertising that made it sell bad at first with people thinking it was just a wii add on, 3rd parties didn't like the poor sales so they jumped ship, no 3rd party support means even worse sales, never improving sales means they don't consider coming back, a vishous cycle

it was not the hacking that killed it

I don't see why anyone would ever say "no" to this question. If a closed platform can be made open, everyone should be rooting for it to happen. This isn't even a narrow question along the lines of "would you support piracy", this is strictly limited to whether you think it would be good for the Switch to get hacked at some undetermined point in time, to which I wholeheartedly have to say "yes". Hacked, open platforms give birth to homebrew scenes, and homebrew draws in people who otherwise would've never become interested in programming at all. I am one such person - before I picked up my DS and an Acekard 2i I couldn't program my way out of a paper bag. I fiddled around with Game Maker every now and then, I made a batch file or two, but I've never actually programmed anything useful. Since then I've grown tremendously as a person - DS homebrew motivated me to learn C and I've been learning ever since. None of this would've happened if the DS was never hacked, so the notion that hacking a platform can only do harm comes across as very short-sighted to me - it can also do a wealth of good.

Yes , idrc about piracy tbh , after all PSP , DS , Wii had loads of piracy , yet they have been successful , heck , even the 3DS had loads of piracy and it didn't failed , people who pirate will always be a minority , so , eh.
as for emulation and homebrew , i would love too see what we could get from the Switch , :)

The question isn't supposed to be based on a Yes/No, it's all about when. At the moment, it's far too early for hacks or maybe piracy. It would be best to give Nintendo some space and maybe give them a year or two before we can step in and customize/download to our heart's content. If you love their games, please take care of them; customers are the very life essence of a company that keeps them going, so please do a good job at keeping it so.
