There's a name I didn't think I'd see again. Quite the entrance, after a 3 year hiatus. But hey, I'm not complaining.

Here I bring you a great new thing: The Subtitler
It's a program that adds a window with translated dialog lines while you play the game on an emulator.

Wew that is some nice work.
Having the visual to go with the text, and knowing exactly where each line is from is a big deal. This also means I'll be able to translate side quests and stuff without all the dialogue being super awkward! So look forward to that... eventually. Still going to be a ways off, but now I can do it without banging my head on the wall for an hour trying to figure out what's going on from context clues.

Seriously, good stuff.

Oh, and would you mind if I added the link to this on the GitHub page?

I'm glad you liked it. I saw it was difficult for you to find all that stuff so I added those features just to make it easier for you.
While making the program it was funny to see how often the game loaded a new script. You would enter a new part of the map and a new script would load, then suddenly another script would load, some character would talk to you and after he finished talking it would load back the script you were at. Trying to find all the dialogue without knowing what script everything was in would make you go crazy.

infamous location scripts strike at our very souls again. Opcode identification was kind of hard on that one actually.

just want to ask how did you do it if you we're in prison all this time.

And I want to ask if You still need translators? I can ask (or force hahaha just kidding) a friend of mine which is a manga translator.

so... I went and visited the SNtranslation website but its no longer up so I decided to try it out most of the dialogues are not yet translated I guess. The main menu and other well.. "Necessary" things are translated and I guess its playable as long as you have a walkthrough to refer to/ :D

Well, I got released a few months ago and I started making this 2 weeks ago...

The translation I'm using is the one being handled by Salixa at his github (https://github.com/salixa/SNSC3-Translation) so any help with the translation should be sent over there.

Update

Here's version 2 of The Subtitler

https://mega.nz/#!RZFwFYgB!bgiSVJhrvmDMqsgvYnU8DDgfxGtoIz_8mmPIbTYbTfM

It's now compatible with a patch Pablitox sent me that translates graphics and system messages. The patch is included together with the program to patch it.
The patch translates graphics, item names, menus, etc, while The Subtitler gives you a window with the translated dialog.
Also the patch causes the original japanese dialog to be unreadable in the emulator (caused by the modified font).
You can use The Subtitler either with the patched ROM or the original japanese ROM, it works the same for both.

Is it really that large? have you tried the compressing it using the "best" as option?

Ehehehe. wait 30 mb I thought it was 40?
Oh, Kirito, sweetie, there's necessary versions of emulators included. It will be a big download but pretty handy one

Still,I have a question. Can I get it to work with text that isn't proofreaded yet?
I'm not familiar with python so I can't assemble anything by myself

Right now it has everything available except for a few files after Day 6 that had bad formatting.
As the translation advances I'll release new versions of the subtitles folder, you'll only have to replace that folder with the new one

Ok Maybe I'll wait the next week so I have 1GB net and for the less buggy program. ;)

I went through and fixed up the XML parse errors I saw.

@oil_ So there are some differences in the parsers we're using. Yours gives me a list of 13 files with bad XML, while mine now passes parsing for all files. Some tags I found that were missing from your script's xml cleansing:

ASCII 34 Double Quote '"' tag <quote> (We'll only have the double quote tag more on that later)
ASCII 42 Asterisk '*' tag <asterisk>
ASCII 45 Hyphen/Minus '-' tag <hyphen>
ASCII 58 Colon ':' tag <colon>
ASCII 60 Lesser-than '<' tag <lesser_than>
ASCII 62 Greater-than '>' tag <greater_than>
ASCII 126 Swung dash '~' tag <swung_dash>
<black_dot>
<left_arrow>

You can check https://github.com/salixa/SNSC3-Translation/blob/master/ScriptValidator/constants.py to see what tags my parser supports. Anything that isn't on the list currently is not being used in the script.

And, the following tags should be treated as errors:

<a>
</a>
<td>
<e>
</end_line.
</screen>
</asciic>

These were all typos and should be fixed at this point.

Edit: I've added a new script https://github.com/salixa/SNSC3-Translation/blob/master/clone.py to clone the github repository. It requires that you have git on your PATH environment variable and that GitPython is installed (pip install GitPython). @oil_ you may want to include this in The Subtitler. This way you won't have to upload another version every time you want to update the translation.

I've been following this thread for quite a while, and after I read the announcement about The Subtitler, it makes me wonder if the progress on the full translation patch will go faster.
Sorry if I sound like a noob, but the release of The Subtitler will increase the possibility of a full release this year?

it's definitely the right step to a clean, polished script. Thought there's still the problem of inserting it. The inserter's not ready (yet). I hope Earthdarkness answers soon.

@Salixa Thanks for all that info. I'm making an auto-updater, it will be a separate exe from subtitler.exe to avoid downloading the repository and doing all the conversion every time someone launches the subtitler. Instead of using the git application and GitPython I'm using the standard python libraries to download the master.zip from github and extracting it. This way is simpler and won't require everybody to install git.

I found two remaining errors in the XMLs (I hope there's nothing more going undetected but I don't think so):
in Final Day/056_25630812_187185c.xml line 54 it says </ascii>>
in Final Day/091_25707212_18842cc.xml line 920 there's a repeated </dialogue> tag

@Everyone:

This week I'll be releasing a new version with the auto-updater, it will be an exe that you simply double click and it downloads and converts the whole translation from the github repository. This will eliminate any need to redistribute new releases just to get updates on the translation.

The new release will also fix an error that caused "untranslated" to be shown everytime your summon beast was mentioned.

There's a problem that I'm trying to tackle, whenever the game gives you options to choose in the dialog box they don't get translated. It looks like the game reads the options directly from the ROM without loading the strings into a RAM buffer so I'm not being able to detect them. I don't know if I'm going to be able to make these get translated and shown in the subtitler.

@Salixa

I saw that you fixed those 2 XMLs. There's one more error in the Final Day/091_25707212_18842cc.xml file.
Lines 910 to 915 have to be deleted because they are repeated.
After deleting those lines everything parses without any errors.
