"Free" (Ads) Retro Sega Games on Mobile from Sega Forever

j9AyfHg.png

Sega has announced their brand new "free" (read: ad-filled) "service" Sega Forever, which offers classic Sega games on Android and iOS. Sega Forever will launch tomorrow (the 6/22) with some classic titles like Altered Beast, Sonic The Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, and Phantasy Star 2, but also promises games from every Sega console including the SG-1000, Master System, Genesis, and even the Saturn and the Dreamcast. SG-1000 through Genesis games are supposedly going to be emulated, but Saturn and Dreamcast games will be full mobile "ports", meaning we'll finally get some proper Saturn gaming on Android!

Each game also comes with "up-to-date" fetures, like cloud saves, touch controls and leaderboards, and Sega promises to add new games "Every two weeks". If you don't like ads, you can optionally get rid of them for a measily $2 in-app purchase, or you can just deal with the ads and enjoy some free Sega games.

 Source

This is definitely some interesting news, the fact that Saturn and Dreamcast games may finally be easily playable on mobile devices without having to resort to emulation is pretty great news, and while touch controls are awful in most cases, the fact that these games will feature controller support means we'll have a great way to play those hard-to-emulate games on the go...as long as Sega ports the right ones (Panzer Dragoon series plx).

Sonic 1 was 150mb for me (also android) a bit excessive if you ask me, but it could be worse *shrugs*
Odd, the download was 44MB, and post install for me is only 70MB. With a save it went up to 88MB, which is a bit...odd, for a save file to be that big.

What Android version? Maybe there's a size difference based on version for some reason.

I don't get the outrage. Ads are fine, and $2 to remove them is a fair fee. Compare that to the prices on Nintendo's Virtual Console.
If Nintendo does release NES/SNES/N64 games on Android and iOS then I hope they'll have their own app + library of games than just spread them through the Play Store / App Store like SEGA's done.

Heh, I guess he assumed there'd be a SEGA Forever app to download all into it.

Android 6.0.1, which is lollipop (i think?) The initial dload was also around 40mb, but after installation it takes about 150mb. Very strange indeed lol

There's already an app that keeps all your apps together - it's called your home screen. Just make a folder, this is a non-issue.
Doesn't fix the issue. If "SEGA Forever" app existed they could alert the users for when new games are added rather than rely on the Play Store.

I just tried Comix Zone and it runs like shit on my phone (3GB RAM, MTK6737 4xCortex-A53 1.25GHz, Android 6) but playing it through MD.emu works perfectly.

They can still do that with the magic of ads and notifications.
Still, not the same.

Sega has a similar issue on Steam. They feel like everything has to be in 3D. Also official emulation from Sega is iffy at best.

I tried the update for the Sonic 1 port, and it sort of looks crap now. No cartridge intro, things pop in and out with no transition, the restore purchases text doesn't show on the button properly, and the advert placement in the pause menu covers up over stuff like the window showing the level
. I personally liked how it was before.

I'm glad that my phone storage is currently full, so it won't auto-update on me then XD

There must be something seriously wrong with the way they're emulating to run that game then....(sega that is)

Part of it is probably my phone since it has a really small screen. Oh, and you may get adverts between levels. Turning off wifi without first unlocking the game fully will stop you from being able to open it. They also removed the achievements and leaderboard from the menu, which is baffling.

Tl;dr original ftw

Have you tried the MD.emu emulator with Sonic and other roms? It runs buttery smooth on my phone but SEGA's Play Store games don't.

I have tried it in the past. Pretty sure the emulators still had a issue with the sound being slightly off, but otherwise spot on.

For Sonic 1 in Android/iOS, they are still using Taxman's remake, so it's still widescreen with Tails/Knuckles, but damn, the game itself seems a lot less professional now, the SEGA logo clashes badly with the Taxman's logo, it asks your age during start-up, then throws a "Play for free, buy the game and bought up already?" screen. I can't say much about the ads though, as I have AdAway active.

I am glad that it's still Taxman's version, when I saw that new SEGA logo during boot, I almost thought they replaced the remake with crappy emulation.

To be fair, Sega is killing it on Steam recently. It seems they have no idea how do to mobile right, so we'll call it Sega 1 - 1 Piracy.
