OK, final thoughts and questions.

Where I am at right now is that I have haxchi, home brew launcher, home brew apps store and wup installer installed on my sd card. On my Wii main screen I have a black icon for haxchi. After I have installed games they appear on the wii u main menu. Here are my questions.

1. Is this all I need to play backups?
2. What if anything can get this console banned?
3. Do I need to run HB Launcher before playing games or just when I want to run wup installer? I'm fuzzy on this since the game appears on the main menu.
4. Why did I see things in the guide about having to put a home brew launcher channel version?
5. Do I need any other CFW in order to play backups (us titles only)?
6. What else am I missing?

Thanks.

1. yes
2. mostly if u cheat u can be banned
3. u need to run cfw with sig patches to run games
4. that makes things easier especially with cbhc. remember, they will only run with sig patches though.
5. just sig patches is what u need. default=sysMenu is what u want in the config.txt of haxchi.
6. it's not that difficult, but I can understand the amount of information that exists.

OK, a string of failures...

I had games installing and running. Now when I try and start a game I get a message saying "the nintendo id for this game has been deleted" or something like that. Also I installed home brew launcher channel and when running it gives an error 199-9999.

I take it I don't have CFW running? If that's the case, from a cold boot, what do I have to do to get CFW running? I thought I just had to run the haxchi black icon from the main menu then I could run a game? I'm pretty confused at this point.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Follow-up.

I think I figured out what I was doing wrong. Some more reading teaches me that I know when I'm in CFW when system version is 99.99.99. I was entering HBL holding B which was not loading it. I then tried just hitting the black Haxchi button and letting it return to main menu then checked system version and saw 99.99.99. At this point hbl channel ran. Installed a game and it ran. Time to do some more reading.

But a question.

HBL Channel is different from the black haxchi button while holding B How? Do they do the same thing?

your config.txt will tell the system what button does what as far as haxchi is concerned. you have to reinstall haxchi each time u change for its configuration to take effect if that's what you're asking.

If you hold B when booting HaxChi it will do the exact same thing as HaxChi channel. The guide doesn't say you have to have HaxChi channel. It's just for convenience since you have to tap HaxChi for CFW first. Unless you set up ColdBootHaxChi (CBHC)

So let me close out our conversation.

I've got haxchi installed with HBL, WUP installer. This all seems to work just fine.

Normal operation (since we turn our wii u all the way off, no sleep mode) is to boot up wii u, hit black haxchi icon which will cycle through (loading CFW) and bring you back to main menu. Then you can play any games loaded. If you want to install a game, you hit haxchi icon while holding B which brings you to the HBL menu and you can run WUP installer.

I am intentionally leaving out HBL Channel, Wup Installer Channel, CBHC (looks way scary for bricking), to keep things very simple.

This seems reasonably simple as far as setup and operation goes. Am I missing any important points?

Am I going to want to play DS games on a Wii U? VC?

Is there something else I can / should be playing on a Wii U?

Are there non-US titles I should be playing on a Wii U?

You know, I hate it when my customers ask me what they _should_ want, and here I am doing it here. Please understand, I'm not a gamer, I just like to complete what I start and want to know what I might not even know about at this point.

Also, Thanks Kafluke for your guide. It was very helpful. Thanks also to Felek666 for his guide as well. I read them both. I also wish to thank every one who posted here and had the patience to read through what must have sounded like total noob speak. It is or was, I've learned a lot this week which is probably what I like most about doing projects like this. I like to learn. Heck, I don't even play video games.

Thanks again for all your help. I do appreciate it.

u can still play ds games, but u need to decide what game ur unlikely to play and set that up as haxchi. u can always play the game in loadiine if u want, so you're not losing anything really.

You only need to launch HaxChi first in two scenarios:

1. You want to play a game that has non legit DLC or is a custom made VC inject.

2. You want to install a non legit DLC or VC inject. Simply holding B when launch HaxChi will put you into a non CFW HBL menu and WUP Installer will throw an error if you try to install something that requires CFW. Get around this by either tapping HaxChi twice (hold b the 2nd time to get I to HBL) or install the HBL or WUP channel and tap that after tapping HaxChi

Micro SD issue is likely the adapter it's self. Unless it's a cheap junk card. What class or quality card is it? If the card is high quality It's almost certain to be the adapter.

the problem might be the micro sd card you're using. I'd seen some other members having similar issues with a micro sd.

Well, that does seem to be the problem. I ripped a regular 8gb sd card out of a RPi that I had running PiHole and set it up for the wii u. Installing a game just suceeded. I'm trying another. Any idea what the problem is with MicroSD? I guess I'll just use the standard SD card from here forward.

Correction to this post... After learning a lot last night I determined that I did not have CFG running when I tried to install games using WUP installer. So I set up my 32gb microsd card again and it's working fine. This was a noob mistake on my part.

yeah, u need that. :P the easiest way to get cfw going on the system, aside from cbhc, is to have the config.txt of haxchi say default=sysMenu . this will boot into the system menu with sig patches.

The user already has HaxChi setup to boot CFW. The problem was he/she was holding B when tapping on HaxChi. Bypassing CFW launch and going straight to HBL in non CFW mode.

This is why I recommend HBL and WUP Installer channel. They won't work unless you are already in CFW mode so everything will install just fine.

Why do I see the occasional SYSTEM DUMP screen when trying to load a game in WUP Installer? reboot, try again and it installs just fine.

Also, in Wii U USB Helper I just saw a game with an update and DLC that was in orange. What does this mean? --update-- Looks like orange means available, green means downloaded?
