I don't really think they were "wasted" slots. They've stated that Dark Pit and Lucina originally just started off as alt skins for Pit and Marth respectively, but then someone on the team just decided to expand the characters by altering them a little bit. They were going to be in the game regardless, and I really doubt they had a ton of development time devoted to them, nor that such development time would have taken away from other theoretical brand new fighters.

However, the nature of Mike would be pretty similar to Ness, utilizing Yo-yos and a baseball bat. With a similar child-like appearance. He lacks the PK attacks of course, so he'd be more hand to hand combat based, his background as an "ace pitcher" means they could probably do something with throwing baseballs. I suppose he could be somewhat unique with his moveset, but it would still have aspects to it that are undoubtedly similar to the Earthbound fighters. So I can kind of see why they haven't been in a rush to include him.

I see people are mostly wanting just characters as additions. For me i feel it would be better to focus on other aspects for improving the game overall like having a player match lobby system. Player match lobbies for up to 8 to 10 people in a room at once with spectating and a way to set the room to either for fun mode or for glory mode.

Also have a way to tell how good or bad an opponents connection is using the options of colored bars or ping numbers. Also getting rid of the reporting system since it just gets abused anyways. A redone netcode would be nice as well.

Really? Where did you read that? They feel like wasted slots to me because they clutter the character select screen. I do think a lot of time went into tweaking those characters, as they ultimately needed to as extremely balanced as all the others.

Oh they've said it in a few interviews in the past, couldn't tell you which ones off hand though. I mean you can say they add extra clutter to the CSS I guess, but that ultimately means nothing, I mean it changes nothing about how the game plays, except I guess makes it a little more to take in when you choose your fighter (no big deal at all in my opinion), and it definitely doesn't seem like if they didn't do say Dark Pit they would have instead had all this extra time to build a new character like say the Inklings from the ground up. These clones would either be there, or not there but with nothing there instead of them. And no, it doesn't sound like those particular clones from those interviews in question did take very long to make compared to brand new fighters.
