I'm so late, finally I've become much better at soldering and I now want to change out my battery for my ezflashiii . I found an old (2011) thread that recommends an ml_2020/va1n. Batteries have come a long way. I've found 'Pansonic VL2020/VCN, VL2020 VCN, VL2020 (Vertical Mount) Lithium Battery Rechargeable (Secondary) 3V 20mAh Coin, 20.0mm. The only difference I can see is the standard charge current is different. The ml_2020/v1an is at 3ma and the other battery on Amazon is 1.5ma. Other than that, everything else seems to match. Would this difference matter? I'd really hard to effup this card, I've had for like ever. Thanks!

The contact tabs on the PCB of a EZ-Flash III is roughly 2.5mm or 3mm apart. The battery you listed has a 10.2mm separation between the tabs, that means your going to be bending the tabs so they fit the board properly.
(distance separation is measured from the center of one tab to the center of the other.)

The battery you linked has a wider tab separation from the picture above.

Your other option is to solder wirewrap to the tabs and PCB. That way you don't bend the tabs in any way. Your probably going to want to use tape or glue to hold down the battery so it doesn't move inside the gba game shell. Soldering directly to the PCB lets you ignore doing this.

Thanks for the input. I may use the solderless tape trick. I'm also looking into using maybe glue (or epoxy) that will "bond" the tabs to a new battery.

You got a good chance of buying a used one and asking the seller how often they used or even ask for a Pic of fw and telling them not to update
