Nintendo announces the New 2DS XL

Coming out of absolutely nowhere, Nintendo has revealed a new variation of the 2DS...the New 2DS XL! The system features a top screen that looks almost like a cell phone snapped onto the bottom of a 3DS. It has the extra processing power of the N3DS, amiibo functionality, and the C-stick nub, while, just like the original 2DS, omits the 3D feature of the handheld. The New 2DS XL will release on July 28, and retail for $149.99.

Completely misses the point of the original 2DS though, which was to be a budget robust device for people who care more about that than 3D.
It's not much cheaper than the regular New 3DS if I'm not mistaken.

The 3D effect was just dumb, when people used it it was only for cutscenes and not actual game play. If people used it for actual game play it just hurt people's eyes. It was never used, I have no idea why they didn't do this years ago.

Says you, nothing more. I love the 3D effect in fire emblem and Mario cart, it really adds a nice level of immersion. So shut up hater

The Wii U was designed to fail just to push 3DS sales and the Switch which was their true plan all along.

I don't know how Nintendo expected the Wii U to be a success with no marketing, a confusing name (I don't think the XBOX ONE is a good name for a console either, but that was hyped and marketed like there's no tomorrow), a lack of games until half way through the consoles life, and an initial model which couldn't install a full Wii U game that wasn't a port or remake.
do you actually believe this?

The 3DS still has major games releasing this year, and, what better way to milk the twilight years of a console than by milking it dry? We have the DSi and Gameboy Micro, so it's not too far afield to assume they'd do this. Not to mention, the smartphone-esque design is...interesting. That might draw in some casuals. A new piece of Nintendo tech will draw in the hardcore Nintendo-crazy collector crowd, and, it'll hook in any parents who haven't yet bought a 3DS for their kid yet, but lack the funds for a Switch. There's also the fact that it's "premium" branding, with the "XL" moniker, making it more of a draw than a N3DS regular, for the same price. It's stupid, but it's Nintendo, so it'll likely sell in droves.
Not to mention that slick design

Not the first part that was a joke.

A lot of people don't use the 3D. I like the 3D with some cutscenes in games, but not for actual gameplay.

Also, it really seems like small portable devices are a dying thing.

While I understand this is supposed to be a cheaper N3DS XL, I think they could have really made a splash by creating something truly different that says, 'Hey, buy me because I'm genuinely different from the last N3DS XL you bought.'
If they are going take time to make something truly different, they may as well make a new handheld at this point.

I don't get what you mean by, 'end up like the NES Classic.'; do you mean availability, having pre-loaded games, or being hacked early?
Availability.

This has to be the dumbest idea ever. Nintendo should be wrapping up the 3DS to focus on the Switch, not prolong the console's lifespan with a new revision nobody wants. I also see that it has a hinge when the whole point of the 2DS was cutting down costs and removing failure points to make it more suitable for younger kids. If you want an N3DS, there are already two variants to choose from, nobody needs a third. Bad idea all around, but I'm sure that Nintendrones will queue up anyways just to own all the revisions. Oh well, at least it look stylish, I'll give them that.

QQ more, we need fresh salt

I don't like the lack of speakers on the top screen. If they are in the bottom as it seems sound won't be as good as on the 3DS. I don't like it IMO.

Speakers on the bottom means there's one less thing going through the hinge. With just the screen ribbon going through it, along with the mic and inner camera on the hinge itself, it's as robust as it can be while still having the clamshell design.

Honestly, who doesn't use a nice pair of headphones most of the time with 3DS? Proper headphones or buds make the games sound awesome vs the tinny shit speakers

Does 3DS hold the record for most revisions for a game system ever? This would be the 5th one.

DS had 3 revisions

Original GameBoy also had 3 I think.

GB, GB Pocket and GB Light(japan only)
GB Color
GBA, GBA SP and GBA Micro
DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL
3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS, New 3DS XL and New 2DS XL

Definitely the 3DS is the Nintendo handheld with more revisions (5, like you said)
