Homebrew I think Retroarch is 240p regardless of resolution settings

This might be a controversial opinion but I've found that with my Wii/CRT tv setup I get the scanlines no matter what resolution I have it set on as long as the vertical number is 224 or 240. I've read a lot of stuff about finding out what the exact resolution of the game you're emulating and then doubling the horizontal lines to make it perfect, but I've found that this is unnecessary & that the system is far more adaptable than people think.

Also because I have a flat screen CRT the Wii has a terrible problem with cutting the edges off the top and sides of the screen. But I've also been able to largely remedy that by selecting 19:14 as the aspect ratio instead of 4:3. Also I recommend selecting either 576x224 or 608x224 if you are using a CRT, especially if it's flat screen. I've read that some Samsung modern tvs are capable of processing 240p but I'm not sure what the optimal settings would be for that.

If you don't set it to match the precise game resolution, you'll get some horrible pixel scaling issues.
That's the experience on the majority of 15KHz true RGB CRT setups which are mimicking arcade specs and what people want to achieve.
If it's not making much difference to you, I'm curious to know exactly what setup you have but I'm guessing it's component and not RGB?
Because it should be very obvious at a pixel scaling level if it's not set right and you should see weird scrolling artefacts and mushed text.
Most of the low res horizontal resolution capabilities in RetroArch are achieved by doubling them up as you say (clarifying for the benefit of others).
e.g if a game's native res is 320x224, you set 640x224 or in the case of Neo Geo majority of games only have 304 active pixels hence 608x224
Many older games are 256x224 (=512x224) or 288x224 (=576x224) and many variants with full 240 vert so really I would only recommend setting them if that's what the original game had.
An obvious matching horizontal resolution capability is one that Capcom use a lot (CPS1/CPS2 and leading up to it) ... 384x224
Here in Europe we have full RGB available on SCART CRT TVs and the PAL Wii outputs RGBs on SCART natively so this is my reference point
I'm aware that in America you might need more complicated setups, or do 240p over component.
Which could be getting other signal processing/conversion into YPbPr on your set, sounds like its working out great for you but that's more your TV helping out than discarding all the theory about 15Khz RGB and why resolution matching is important.

Yeah I'm using an SD flat screen 24" Sony Trinitron tv made in 2003 & my Wii is connected via the component cable outlet. I'm confident that it's 480i & not any sort of HD b/c I used to have a dvd player that would upconvert to 720p if you connected it via components & when I tried it in this tv it wouldn't work & the picture was all scrambled. But it is a pretty modern tv as far as CRTs go so maybe that's the benefit? I haven't noticed any problems with the image except that when I changed it from 4:3 to 14:19 to fit my screen better it caused mushing/distortion of the words. But it didn't do it at all in 4:3. Also it seems like the issue is gradually self-correcting somehow as I play it in that resolution more & more.

OK the main thing is that it works for you and looks good.
I can only guess because it's a Sony that it's doing some kind up conversion for the low resolution stuff over component.
What happens when you set it to 256 lines vertical?
