Just a quick status update... It's been awhile since I've talked about V!

Not much to report other than that I've been playing it a lot ever since the DLC became available to us. Trying to get Full Combos on all of the Muzukashii songs is hard, man!

Unfortunately, there is nothing to say about Donder Quest other than, "I can't figure it out." I know where the script files are (at least I THINK these are the script files) but I have no idea what to do with them. I am really inexperienced with hex-editing, programming and figuring out what needs to be done with what kind of file. The only department I am good at here is the graphic editing, heh. I am going to attach the files that I believe are the story script. If someone would like to help further the progress of the translation, please don't hesitate to download the files, respond, send me a PM, etc.

I feel guilty for a few reasons here. I feel bad because I feel like I can't contribute any much else to the project just because I am only proficient at editing the in-game graphics. I also feel bad that there are lots of players out there wanting to play Donder Quest that can't, because I can't figure it out. I also feel greedy when asking for someone else to look at the files because I can't figure it out. People have already contributed such fantastic talent to the project as far as converting files and figuring things that I haven't been able to out. It just feels wrong of me to keep asking for help. I know that projects like these thrive based on community help, but still I feel a bit bad.

Alas, here are the files anyways. Sorry for the lack of updates. Hopefully this will change in the near future. In the meantime, I will work hard on getting all the graphics-based stuff translated. I just can no longer guarantee that the actual raw story mode stuff will be worked on at the current moment.

I think its in little endian and uses UTF-8 text, made a quickbms script to extract the text, not sure though if all are extracted properly.

script does not support re-import since I used a memory_file and quickly made it with my limited noob knowledge of quickbms lols

updated the script to accept rei-mporting of modified text (not fully tested, don't have the game), though not perfect... just keep the translated text on STORY_000_jp.dat below 32 charcters and on STORY_XXX_XX_jp.dat below 1024 characters and jut type 'force' to force reimporting of translated text

Thank you so much for giving this a shot! I tried out the tool and, well... I can't really say whether or not it is working properly. The first scene in the game, our two protagonists are complaining about cleaning when they find a book. The first line in the game us by a narrator and goes "One Afternoon-". When I put that into the respective text file and force-imported it back into the dat file, I put it in the game to see how it'd show. But, it didn't... It just shows a blank text box, unfortunately. I tried with another line, this time one being spoken by Don that goes along the lines of "This isn't what I want-don. Cleaning isn't very relaxing either...." (TL credits @shiduyo, hah) and then did the same process as before. This is what shows up in the text box:
cvj5pNV.png
Now, I had a few thoughts as to why it isn't showing up, but I can't really be certain of them. One thing that crossed my mind is that the story font just doesn't support english text or has missing characters like the quest description font. The other thought I had was that maybe I needed to type the text in as fixed width text, but I couldn't really figure out how to do that. I tried messing around with stuff in Notepad++ but I couldn't get it to work properly (like even type in full-width in the first place). See below. So I don't really know either way.

Even if this isn't exactly working now, thank you so much for taking the time to try something out man! Baby steps is all we need to try to get this show back on the road! :D

Edit: Apparently typing in full-width is easier if you have JP input configured like @shiduyo does. Text now shows, but has wider spacing and... missing characters... At least we know the script works though! I had the stupid idea that maybe if the text was all in one case or another that it would show differently, but that didn't produce any more results. Uppercase and lowercase both have a significant amount of english characters missing.

I've been translating something that has to do with video games, and I've encountered a term "特殊連打" in conjunction to an arcade takio game like Takio no Tatsujin. As far as I can tell, this term refers to some particular manner of inputting drum rolls to maximize the number of hits registered. Does this term have any established English equivalent?

While we're on the topic, is there any standard English equivalent of "maibachi?" As far as I can tell, this term is not used in musical takio drumming, and is only used to refer to sticks used to play Taiko no Tatsujin.

Failing that, is there any more appropriate place I might ask about this? I haven't found a better place so far.

Hmm. I am not too sure how that would translate... Looking into it a bit, it seems to be something around the lines of "light tapping" maybe? Like how you would hold the drumsticks slightly closer to the taiko drum and only do half "light" taps in order to hit more times. I really have no idea how I would summarize that in english though.

As far as maibachi goes, I have no clue. I don't know anything about Japanese. I will try summoning @shiduyo, but no guarantees he'll know either. :ha:

And for asking where to ask further questions like this, if it pertains to Vita hacking or translating, there is a vita translation discord I think. I am not part of it, but someone can probably point you in the right direction. But for just normal Japanese knowledge, I would recommend some Japanese language forums. I don't really know of any off the top of my head, but I feel like somewhere on Reddit would help maybe? I hope you get the answers you need either way though!

So it is impossible to translate the Donda Quest Mode ?
Well... That's the thing I don't know right now. I don't quite know how to solve the issue on my own. If the font is similar to a texture, I would think that I could just add the letters that are missing to the texture and bam, be done with it. But I have a feeling that it is more complicated than that. It would require a real romhacker to figure it out. We're currently having the same exact issue with the one of the Taiko 3DS games as well, unfortunately.

Thank you for your reply.

It's good to know that there's no standard English-language equivalent of 特殊連打; if there was, it wold probably be immediately obvious to a devoted player such as yourself. This means I get to make up my own.

Where maibachi are concerned, I've found a lovely page from Namco that explains (in Japanese) that "maibachi" are personal, custom sticks that people use to play Taiko no Tatsujin. It seems likely to me that the word actually comes in part from English: "my bachi," "bachi" being the word for drumsticks. Apparently, it's quite common for serious Japanese Taiko no Tatsujin players to have their own set of sticks, and the page explains that it's become an important part of the culture surrounding the game. So much so that Namco now sells an official set of "maibachi" (as advertised on the page); a search on Amazon reveals that there are quite a number of third-party vendors, as well.

Been awhile since I've mentioned anything "Custom DLC" related, main reason was I hit a road block where it almost seemed like pure luck that the songs in previous videos worked since I ran into a few that didn't which meant I was doing something wrong and it killed my motivation, few months back now on the 3DS side HEX values got figured out for song length which saved me quite a bit of time with issues I had on that side, looks like it was a similar issue on the VITA side which was stopping songs from working.

Due to recent updates that allow for USB Support on PSTV and the fact I booted up Taiko V again to toy with some other files it lead me back to messing around with porting songs from the 3DS over to VITA and after multiple hours of changing HEX Values and various testing I feel like its safe to say I've made some nice progress, as it stands I've had no issues porting over 34 songs, so far only 2 didn't work, I'm not quite sure why but that seems like an issue to look into after I've done converting what does work, since there does seem to be a failure rate in my process even if its small it requires testing which takes time.

Now, How about a video that pretty much summed up what I said, with a quick look at my converting process and showing off another song, was a bit under the weather when I recorded so I don't sound great and lose my train of thought but after 7 months? of nothing it seemed like an update was in order.

No release estimate, still deciding if I want to try port over all the songs I already did for 3DS since it really isn't that hard of a process but takes time with graphics and testing in-game, or I put out what I have with updates as I do them, undecided atm and I don't even know where I would upload the tool/songs since I only visit a few VITA Hacking related sub-reddits wouldn't know where everyone would go to look for such a tool when its ready.

I would normally just go with the VITA version of that iso site but the 3DS side always seems like its getting hacked and I've had posts vanish due to rollbacks and such its getting on my nerves.

It's been awhile folks! @shiduyo and I have been working on this on and off for a little while. @shiduyo is working hard translating a lot of system and story text and a patch should be out sometime in September. Keep your eyes on his twitter and maybe even mine since we more often than not post screenshots there before they make their way into this thread!

Some new screenshots have been added to the OP along with instructions on how to get native screenshots to work within the game. It requires TaiHen/Enso, which I am 99% sure all of us are running by now, but just in case I thought I would mention it anyways!

More news to come soon-don!

It's officially October 4th! Unfortunately, I have some good and bad news. Originally, I wanted to release the full patch today, but I came across a few issues.

The Bad
When we first started this project about a year ago, we didn't get all of the tools necessary to completely finish everything within the game until much later after we started. Because of that, I left a lot of miscellaneous things that I COULD have finished incomplete. This is all my fault for that and I sincerely apologize. My goal was to complete the patch by the anniversary, but since there was actually a lot more left than I thought, it just isn't possible. I am the sole translator for this project and it's my first full project as a translator, I have never done something so big before, so I had underestimated the amount of work I could complete in a given time. I am also still a student, first and foremost. As much as I would have liked to work on it more, I also became lazy with the project as I was doing schoolwork the past year. This is my fault as a beginner, I could have delivered this project to you all much sooner if it wasn't for my laziness. But, this has been a good learning experience for me and I have put so much love and effort into the work I have completed so far!

The Good
The project will not be delayed by too much. I now plan to finish by AT LEAST early November. Ideally, I would like to release the patch before October ends, but we shall see where my work effort takes me. I'm also creating a blog post about the entire process behind this translation! So much work has gone into this, it would be a shame to not document all of it. I also want to truly express how grateful I am for DarkSynopsis and Nagato in it, for the wonderful tools they've made and the work they've done. So once again, I am sorry for the delay, but please continue looking forward to the complete patch!

I'm currently using NoNpDrm
I gotcha. That is unfortunately why it isn't working. The patch isn't compatible with the NoNpDRM version of the game since that version is still encrypted. This patch (and another handful of vita translation patches) still rely on MaiDump or Vitamin just because the games are installed decrypted. I am aware of uploads of the game that are in NoNpDRM format that have the patch applied through a method highlighted here, but I can't link you to any downloads due to site rules. It's a little bit more effort than the other versions, but it seems to work (note that I haven't tried this method myself).

Another key thing to note is that the DLC is not compatible with the NoNpDRM version of the game. Just a heads up!

Bro you real MVP thanks for the help <3
No problem! Hopefully you and everyone else will be able to play the game fully translated soon!

Shiduyo is a bit busy right now with some Japanese study work, but all the graphical work is done for the mission mode. Rather than releasing an unfinished patch for now, we're going to work on it just a wee bit longer so that it comes out perfect (or at least better than the messy PS4 official translation)! Thanks to everyone who has been checking up on this every now and then and sorry for the lack of updates! We'll have more stuff to talk about Soon™!
