I think the horses are great, probably the most realistic horse riding in any video game title anywhere. I love that they have AI, and keep going Western you're not controlling then directly. It makes fighting on horseback way easier.
Someone feel like a cowboy :P

To be honest, i only ever rode horse in zelda game was ocarina of time and majora's mask. But they both the same so anyway, you just press a direction and hold it, seem basic.

How do i explain it in this game? Ummm i guess is kinda like how driving games are? Not exactly, it has auto movement where it moves without any direction to hold. Is nice, i just wish the speed up thing lasted longer or had more uses. If anyone know where to get a better horse, tell me.

Some how i didn't know about riding horses, while i was playing the game, my dad watched and he was like "This game need horses, you climb mountains a lot and walk around, every time you run you need stamina" But when i found out how to get horses i showed him and he was shocked that it was in the game. Lol

the other nice thing about the horse, it actually plays is own music when riding it, so i guess it makes for nice touch, reminds me of super mario, when riding yoshi makes music sound a bit different. :)

I wouldn't say is amazing experience, but is works for the game, especially for aiming bows and throwing weapons, but is no where near as cool as in assassin's Creed :P

Since I've never rode a horse before I can't say if they're realistic or not, probably not. The horses in BotW can be really stupid.

Horses in a video game that I'd call somewhat realistic would be from Red Dead Redemption. I really loved them! :)

Just remembered, Z-Targeting on horseback fucked me over so many times.

Ive ridden a horse and a camel, horses in this game ride more like camels imo, so god damn retarded.

It's okay. I thought Aonuma and company discussed horses avoiding obstacles like trees on their own, but seems to me they just come to a sudden halt and refuse to move instead. Seems the horse AI was dumbed down from their initial aspirations to just fighting your input and simple path following.

You have to let go of the stick to let the AI kick in when moving through trees, works for sure.

I have Epona, but I'm never using her.
It's just annoying and it goes way faster teleporting when I want to go somewhere.

And yes, it's an improvement over previous games, still not good enough.

in games like OoT, TP, the control is so far worse. Getting the horse to jump is so irritating. They did a MUCH better job.

Horses are great, but I'm rarely on them for too long before I feel the desire to explore somewhere that my horse wont be able to get to.

I like the horses, especially that they'll follow the path and avoid trees. Epona's useful to have very early in the game, but after that... nope. I wanna teleport and climb mountains and shit, horses just slow me down then.

When I say realistic I mean like you give a command once and the horse does it, instead of having to hold the control stick constantly in the direction you want to go. So pressing A is like giving the horse a nudge with your heels and dabbing the control stick left or right is giving pressure on the reins.

The only issue I have trouble with is when the camera isn't directly behind the horse, and my instinct to ask the horse to slow down or turn is to dab the stick the opposite direction to the horse as I see it on the screen, but in fact it's always down to slow down, left for left relative to the horse, etc. Like if I'm looking at it side on and the horse is trotting from the left towards the right of the screen my instinct is to dab left to slow down the horse, but it doesn't work of course.

You can give your horse carrots (max. 3) to artificially boost spurs; I recommend calming them after you 'yah' twice so they stay in a straight line. Animals apparently don't like being kicked in the ribs or treated like a BMX bike.

Fastest, tameable equine - Zelda's horse, which is part of a side quest given by an old man at Outskirt Stable; it's to thw west , SW-ish of Hyrule Castle.

Toughest sonofabitch equine - Ganon's horse, also a quest by a researcher hanging out by a tree, but I couldn't give you exact directions...it's kind of east of Gerudo land, by the Great Plateau (horse.)

The most fun spirit-beast is on Satori Mountain, also west. It's kind of close to Outskirt Stable, but the LOTM only shows up when you see the mountain engulfed with the aurora. Literally can't go below 4/5 spurs, but you also can't dismount/un-mount and you can't keep it.....maybe?

I found out the zelda white horse is not the fastest horse. I found a black horse that is actually faster it has speed 5, strength 4, and stamina 5, temperament is wild. I find it unbealivable that the game would generate horses with better stats than the special horses. and unlike the special horses you can go wild with customizing it.

Things I like
+ steering the horse left right
+ Jumping off it and do the slow motion
+ whistling while running ->horse catching up to you -> mount horse and speed up without losing the momentum.
+Customizing horses
+Getting stamina bonus from feeding horses
+Being able to revive your horses
+Automatically following roads
+causing damage when running into monsters. saves weapons.

things I don't like
-Glitchy, isolated events.
-looking back while mounted
-Shooting arrows to moving objects/monsters while mounted
-stopping the horse
-There are too many rocky areas in breath of the wild, it's annoying as horse can't jump high and will come to a complete stop.
-Not being able to call the horse if too far away from it. (this is too realistic)
8.5/10 Best horse riding experience I have had in the Zelda series.
