Teach me English please

Hey guys i am back again.

I spammed my brain with alot of english movies and series and then i started talking with friends from USA. I am able now to fully understand them <33, like i said before, i had problems to understand english words if someone TALKS and not types.
Well, now i understand everything and my friends said my english is better than i think (yeah after i watched alot of movies, series, and read alot xD). My friend also said, sometimes he hears my german accent, but the most of time i speak without an accent, and sometimes with a american accent, not english and thats a good start.

I started to concentrate my self more to the american accent and my friends are saying now i am really good and 70% of the time, they don't hear anymore my german accent

FINALLY.

I have now 2 problems left:

1. My friend laughs everytime if i speak out a word with "th" (like now, wi"th" xD).He says i spell the "th" as a "F" out ... which is true. I know how to spell out the "th" (tongue tip between front teeth) but anyway i spell it out as a "F" because i hear no difference between "F" and "th" ... even not in movies, i hear a real "F" in "th"....
I started now to spell out ONLY the "th" in words with "th" instead of "F" and my friend heard it and said thats perfect now but i hear really no difference ...

Can maybe someone tell me where the difference is exactly ? XDDD.

2. This is a small question what i don't get since YEARS, and hear and try since YEARS but never get it:

THE "O" !!!! i searched alot in google + youtube. There are alot of tutorials for spelling out single "characters" in english like "v", "w" or the "r" (i knew all of these already before and i wasn't still sure til my friend said thats all right).
But i found no "tutorial" for "O" !!!

Can someone help me how to spell out the "o" ? like the word "No". People spell it out as "N-ou-h". We have in german a "O" and a "Ö". I tried "Ö" but my friend said this is still wrong XDD i have no clue how to spell it out...

People who speak and pronounce a "th" sound like an "F" are not speaking correctly, for your information. I'm from the UK, where pronunciation is quite important since we have a ridiculously diverse society. A "th" does have an extremely distinctive sound and doesn't sound the same as "F" or "ph". For example 'With' does not sound like "wif" or sometimes even "wiv". The "Th" sound is very distinct and as you said, with the tongue between the teeth.

That said, in english there are words that use "th" that sound differently, such as 'this' or 'that'. A good way of explaining it is like this : In words like 'With' you put your tongue between your teeth and blow to make the sound; in the example of 'the' you still put your teeth between your tongue, but you don't blow.

I found a pretty good video covering this pronunciation, maybe it will help you. It is american, but the lesson is quite sound.

O is pronounced like No, or as in 'Ocean'. But i'm not sure what you mean by spelling it.

"O" pronunciation can vary depending on the word, and in different cases it sound kind of like the German O (dog), or OU (no), or U (pool)... but it's not exactly the same, e.g. noodles doesn't sound as "nudls" (intended to be read in German pronunciation), the "U" sound actually sounds more... closed? than "U"... no idea... someone sure can explain that better.

Forget about ö, ä, ü... Nothing is pronounced like that.
Actually, before you forget about that, please teach me

My German sucks. I never pronounce that right, but I get around anyway... What brings me to, you can be understood even if you don't have perfect pronunciation.

That's true, it's easy to understand many foreign people. I know turkish, polish and even Chinese immigrants who have better grammar than some born and bred British people I know.

But there's nothing wrong with wanting to learn more, it's the human condition to want to learn more after all. I've taught a few english lessons over the years as a casual tutor, I never went the full hog to actually getting a teaching degree though.

Can someone give me a link of a tutorial or a clip where i hear the "no" and see the lip movements ? to figure out how i have to "move" my motuh or maybe tongue to get this "o" to work. I know we have a "u" and a "oo" like "pool" etc.

I know how to spell them all out. Just words with a single "o" making me trouble... like "no" (no-u-h"), i still don't get it... i am still practicing but i don't get it to work XD.
Do my lips have to look "round" like a poor "o" when i spell out as example "No" ? or do my lips should look more "width" ?

In the Game Rune Factory 4 at the Beginning i read a text: "Are you Settin' out to do a bit o' sightseeing ? "
If i try to Translate it (i tried alot of Apps and Softwares on PC+Mobile), they Translator tools dont Translate me the 3 Words which are important for me to learn them.

So, i start now to ask my first Question here: What does Settin means ? (Just explain me the word on English, i will understand you people), i mean: What does it means in combination with " ' " ? I dont understand words with a " ' " and the end of the words.

I Guess Settin is like Driving, but for Ships, right ? but for what is the " ' " ?

And what does o' means ? Does it means "Off,of,on" or "oh" ?

If i put the " o' " away in the translator, the word sightseeing gets translatet, but the Full Text doenst makes sense still ( i know the Translator dont translates right, thats why i am here^^). So its important that i know what this O' means, and i guess "sightseeing" means something like moving in another City (only for few days or something, not to life there) to watch the City and hear about the Citys story etc. am i right ?

Learn "England" English is better than America English because "England" English is correct and America English is not correct.

LOL. They are different dialects. No English is more correct than the other. It's the same with Portuguese/Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish/Argentinean Spanish, Hochdeutsch/Plattdeutsch, etc.

Yeah, you are correct but my teacher told that "England" English speaks more properly than "America" English. So I choice an "England" English like Mum, Flavourite, Colour, and etc. To speak like Mom, favorite, color, and etc sounds weird to me.

Most of times on youtube comment section people don't know the difference between "your" and "you're".
I've learned by playing multiplayer games with chat inside, my only problem is when i try to speak with someone. However the only good thing is i can understand them.

I'm not quite sure how much this will help, but I'll tell you a bit about how I learned English. My first language is Swedish, but it didn't stop me from learning English.

When I was young and we began to learn English in 2nd grade, I was completely against it. I refused to learn a new language, because it seemed like an impossible task for me since I already knew Swedish and I thought it was impossible to know two languages without confusing them (oh was I wrong). Eventually I began skipping classes in English, and I came farther off than others. What eventually made me realise that I needed to understand English, was games.

It was a bit more complicated at that. About a year after or so, I started playing a lot of Minecraft. After a short while I found out how to join servers, and I started playing on a Pokémon server. Since everybody spoke English there, I had to use what I knew and also use Google Translate. At that state, Google Translate was really new and terrible, but it did help me quite a bit and people started correcting me there making me learn more and more, and after a while I started using less and less Google Translate. I also joined a few Skype calls with players on that server, and while it was hard at first, it didn't take me that long of a while until I could speak quite well English.

After I left that server, I started joining a few others aswell as joining Skype calls that were hosted. From that point, it was only forward. Not long after, I started getting a lot of encouragement from my English teacher for speaking so well English, because I was fluent already at the age of 10.

My English is still far from perfect (heck, I use both British and American English words), but I am still training and doing my best to get better.

What I propose to you for learning English better, play more games in English, join more English Discord/Skype/TeamSpeak etc calls, and join more English communities. Translate words and sentences you don't understand, and practice using them in other sentences as well as practice pronouncing them. It might take a while to get better, but you just have to trust the process. But remember not to force yourself way too hard.

My way was, watching movies / shows and playing online games with voice chatting through teamspeak, you can try overwatch too

The difference between these two "th" sounds is the difference between speaking and whispering. You blow for both; the difference is that for one (the second one, for "the"), you vocalize with your vocal cords.

I speak from experience, being immersed in an English environment helped me so much. The gap between 2014 and 2017 is very big.

Talk with friends, read English books, watch English shows, play games in English, and also write in English. All of this over time will make the difference. With a lot of practice, everyone can do it!

If you want to play an game in english I highly suggest the Ace Attorney series. It's a visual novel so you can use it as a test.

Watch Canadian, American or English (UK) shows to get a comprehension of the different English accents that exist and get used to them. As for writing, this comes a bit more natural as the longer you post on forums/etc in English the more used you'll be to it. Learning "standard" English isn't hard but if you ever want to take time to learn the Shakespearean English, well, that will take you years.

Dead languages are something that fascinate me but have not took the time to learn any of them, I do understand a little of Latin but that's because I'm Portuguese so it helps out knowing it.

Yes, they do sound the same, just written slightly different. It's not like Football and "Soccer," two completely different words.

The English-speaking Canadians have said on forums that their English is made of a mix of English and American and then they take the best bits of each. It makes sense. It's how I do it too.
