Because it's a product owned by lots of people that originally was the only reliable way to play backups on the 3DS and still offers a few features that are, in my opinion, more convenient than current free CFW.

FTFY

Seriously, it depends on the user.

It's common knowledge that Gateway cheats are far more convenient than NTR, which wasn't designed specifically for cheats. In the context of 3DS games (ignoring DS, DSi, and GBA games), it is a fully functional CFW that also offers 3DS cartridge loading. Users have the option of cartridge backups and CIAs. Granted, they haven't released any real updates recently so other features in free CFW like Luma's code.bin patching and cro patches give reason to not exclusively use Gateway, but that does not diminish the additional convenience of certain features.

You and I have very different definitions of convenient.

What are you guys talking about?

The transfer rate to copy a 3ds file to my sdcard is limited by the rate of my sdcard. Which the ones I use are around 40 megabytes per second.

Downloading from freeshop you are limited to the 3ds wireless speed.

Copying the 3ds file direct to the microsd card is probably like 50 times quicker then downloading the game over wireless.

Wireless speed on 3ds from freeshop MAX speed I have seen reported (max I have actually gotten is more like 900K per second) 2.4 Megabits per second
Speed from copying from PC to microsd card 320 Megabits per seconds

That makes copying directly to SD card around 130 times quicker.

You guys saying it is faster than using a GW, have no idea.

When you install games with freeshop you have the same speed like downloading 3ds roms. And you can safe 70$

It's actually even faster because it transfers to your SD Card as you download it.

You are all on crack or have dial-up internet. I can download 10 .3ds files and get them onto my Gateway's mSD card WAY faster than the 3DS is capable of downloading even 1 game with free shop.

Would be so much nicer here if the admins could implement per-thread banning. Seriously, if you don't have a Gateway, aren't curious about getting one, and especially if you, in fact, are a complete RETARD and hate Gateway... then you don't belong in a Gateway thread. GTFO.

What about it do you find inconvenient?
Well for one thing, to install NTR all I did was install a CIA and download a plugin.

I also did not pay $80 for a dead flashcart that could potentially brick my $200 device.

All I do to use NTR cheats is press select midgame. NTR also offers a lot of neato features besides cheats, such as backlight adjusting midgame, streaming, screenshots without miiverse, instant power off, etc.

I highly doubt Gateway even has that much of an adoption base. Even when Gateway was a big deal, not many people had it. This community is barely large as it is. That shit was too expensive for what it was.

Honestly, I really don't see the need for Gateway to continue to exist. It is a relic of an older time and now leeches off the advancements of the community. They're a joke.

In other words, you want a circlejerk because people have opposing opinions to yours?

As long as the discussion is relevant to the topic, people deserve to come and discuss. Stop being a bitter fanboy.

All I do to use NTR cheats is press select and XY buttons.
Cheats are built-in to Gateway. Just put the cheat files on the red card and press the button sequence to get to the menu. Also no need to launch the CIA every single time you boot the console.

NTR can be used alongside Gateway, so it's not like Gateway is any less convenient in this regard.

There are zero reports of Gateway users being bricked when using the latest version (excluding A9LH stuff, which is user error).
I highly doubt it even has that much of an adoption base. Even when Gateway was a big deal, not many people had it. This community is barely large as it is.

But that's ok, there are people still using ReiNand too, apparently.
It may be a relic, but it can still do things that no other CFW can.

Well.. I used it a lot of times and could play all the games I wanted before the free Custom Firmware where even close to archive what I wanted. I don't use it that much anymore, that is for sure.

But who knows what Gateway have up their sleeves? Maybe they can surprise us? And if not, who cares. :-)

Put the cheat file on the red card and hit the sequence? Already that sounds ridiculous. I don't have to enter the Konami code for NTR. I just hit select.

I'm more curious who is booting their console over and over that changing software is apparently a chore. I haven't turned my 3DS off in a long time. Changing software is inherent to the system software. You're grasping at straws if that is a quirk of Gateway for you.

I think it's cute you particularly used "zero reports of Gateway users being bricked when using the latest version" as if Gateway can't just brick your consoles at any second and whim. As if it hasn't happened before.

What does Gateway do that CFW can't, if you mind my asking? As far as I can tell, Gateway is trying to be CFW to stay relevant. I wouldn't even be surprised if this "surprise update" was just more homebrew with Gateway's name on it written in crayon.
