The "100 years ago when Ganon destroyed Hyrule" is referring to the original Zelda game where you had to collect the 8 pieces of the Triforce to defeat Ganon and rescue Zelda. Zelda II takes place about 6 or 7 years later later and you prevent the return of Ganon. However, Zelda II has towns where Zelda I doesn't. So what happened to those towns since the events of Zelda II? Ganon was defeated in Zelda I and those towns were not even seen in the first game. So something must have happened between Zelda II and BoTW where Ganon returns and destroys the towns and Link is apparently killed but put in the Shrine of Resurrection for a century, setting up the events for BoTW.

Umm not that i should say that no one cares but why is it important? How important is the zelda series story been to everyone? I'm curious to know.
More important than the Mario games. I mean I've heard some people said that Super Mario Sunshine took place before Super Mario Bros. 3, that makes no sense!

I agree. Was actually thinking about the same thing.

Spoiler Link saves Zelda.
Spoiler Ganon threatens to take over all of Hyrule.

Not that important, but it will vary player to player. I'm here for the adventure gameplay. Which is definitely present in BotW just like it is in other Zelda games, even though it's quite different from those others.

Mario games really don't have storylines to them, unless you count some of the RPG games like SMRPG and PM:TTYD. Mario just goes from land to underground/underwater and castle to castle to rescue a princess from a dragon turtle king and that's that.

I care. It's not super important, for sure, but I enjoy thinking about it and imagining how it all fits in.

I don't agree with that theory though. Since the goddess statues looks like the one in Skyward Sword (which is the first in the timeline right now), I imagine that it takes place closer to that game somehow.

I'm contradicting myself now, but I also feel that it would fit closely before Wind Waker. The goddess statues are nowhere to be found between Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker, but everything else feels like it fits into that place (in my opinion).

Mario & Luigi series
Paper Mario series
Luigi's Mansion
Super Mario galaxy
Super Mario sunshine
Mario party
Mario dance dance revolution

Also perhaps more I'm not even aware of. :P

Is a game with a story like anything else. Is only as important as the people who care. Not that i'm saying no one does. But is not some huge deal what time line a game in the series takes place especially if the people making the games can't keep it in order themself. Had the games in the series been made in the sequence to properly represent the proper order, then would people still try to find holes in the logic of what order the games fit? Somehow i think devs do it on purpose cause they don't think people care about how to piece the stuff together rather than just tell a new story to go with a new game to keep the interest in players.

I love this game and all, but the story makes no sense. As far as which link this is, I think its yet another seperate reincarnation. Link had to fight calamity ganon, which none of the other links did. You could say a different link beat ganon in his game, then had to fight him again pre botw as calamity ganon, but that wouldnt explain how it / he got free again... In fact... The game doesnt touch on this at all.

Spoilers ahead!!!

Now. The end of the game. After you beat calamity ganon and he goes all beast pig on you, Zelda tells you that he has given up on reincarnation in a desperate attempt to win.... Ok.... So why did they seal him away at the end and not kill him for good? How does he come back in future games in the timeline if he cant reincarnate any more, and why would every game that takes place after this not have calamity ganon instead of whatever is actually in it?

Next we have the technology. According to the game, the ancient shieka made it all... Ummm.... When? We know tech of this level has existed since at least skyward sword, but it is CLEARLY lost in future games. So when did the shieka make the guardians? Where did they go after botw? Why is it different tech than what we see in skward sword? Considering how the tech was lost to people and they had no records of it or any idea how to use it, we can assume that happened WAAAAY before the 100 years included in botw's story. So where does this all fit in? In my head.... nowhere.

I love this game, but I really felt it was more skyrim and less zelda. The story made no sense, the dungeons were short and boring, plus the new terminal gimmick was dumb imo. I like the old style of dungeon better. The game barely has any enemies you'd normally expect from a zelda title.... I could go on. This game was a huge stepping stone for Nintendo to take their IP into more modern style game, but it still needs work. I'm looking forward to the next one!

Whatever, they're not really thinking about where each game fits into the timeline at all.

You're deluding yourself if you really think they care about that during development.

Zelda 2 has towns because story reasons.

It has towns because they decided that towns would be a nice thing to put in. Everyone was doing that in their RPG Adventure title things at the time.

Also, you have it backwards. Zelda 2 DID have towns, zelda 1 didnt.

Yeah, yeah. They shoehorn something vague in, but it never had any effect on the games whatsoever, aside from a cameo or two.

You could say it was the first game in the timeline, and it'd work as well. I could even justify this using Skyward Sword.

We know.... The zelda timeline has always been a fan thing. It was stated years ago that the games were NOT linked at all in story, but rabid fans pestered the hell out of them till they made something up. Now that they have an official timeline, however, they should really stick to it.
