i'm going to buy a wiiu with tons of games on disc and i want to hack it and play games from sd card, since i don't want to dedicate an hdd exclusively to this console. Considering the games and their size in terms of gb, which sd card size is the better option? I think that 256gb might be a good choice (the 512gb's price seems to be quite a lot), but I don't know. I prefer to have all the most important game inside (splatoon, mario, yoshi, zelda, kirby and some other decent third party) so i'm not forced to change sd card (i hate even switching discs). I don't think I'm going to use RedNAND since i'm going to play only games and not messing with system files.

P.S.: which is faster in terms of games loading: sd card, disc or hdd?

Hello,

Considering that you want several games on the SD, I think a SD of several gigas will require, after all depends on the number of games.

Would you like to play online with your games ??

I don't understand the "dedicate" part since your storage device is just gonna sit there beside the Wii U anyway so you don't need the mobility of a SD card. A HDD would be much cheaper in term of GB/$

Maybe it's better... The reason is that I already have an HDD for the Wii and the idea of having another one exclusive for the WiiU doesn't make me happy... I hope someone could make a usbloadergx for the Wii which loads games on a secondary partition... Anyway, as far as I can tell now, the sygpatched sysnand is the best option for compatibility and off-the-shop dlc support, so I think I will surrender and buy another HDD...

If i were you I would sell the Wii, use the HDD for the Wii U. You can also play Wii games on the Wii u afaik so there's no reason to keep both.

The original Wii can output real 240p and the Wii U cannot to my knowledge, so if one uses it for old arcade and console games/emulators, it's superior in that regard, as well as native GC ports/memory card slots on older models (a bit moot with Nintendont, though). Other than that, I can't think of anything else.

My idea was actually to sell the Wii and use WiiU retrocompatibility; but I thought I can't use the same drive both for WiiU and vWii retrocompatibility. I thought that WiiU uses a proprietary file system while Wii USB loaders uses the more common fat32 (because I use it also with neek2o). Am I wrong? Can I use the same hard disk for WiiU and Wii games ? That would be nice!

Use the hdd for wiiu a 128GB stick for vwii and gc games. Sums up my Setup works fine. You have to ustealth the stick After copying on the games though.

32 GB is sufficient for installing any title, since the largest is probably Xenoblade X at 21 GB and the absolute official maximum is 25

Of course a bigger card allows you to keep more installation files on it and install more software in a single operation while you sleep :)
One Wii usb loader can also load from SD (with reduced performance) if you want to avoid the hassle of switching between 2 disks

doesn't the usb stick needs auxiliary power too? are you using it with USB Y Splitter cable or it works fine with only one port used?

Currently I have a 500GB drive for Wii U storage and I bought an Y Cable for it... seems to works fine now, but I don't know if pen drives need it too.
I'm not sure if I need to buy a larger drive and give the old one to Wii and GC "retrogaming", since I don't find a lot of WiiU titles deserving to be played and they don't take a lot of space.

I don't know if pen drives need it too.
99% are probably fine without (even the full power for mechanical disk is only required when starting the motor), but it can't hurt

It's not recommended to use the Wii U with pen drives due to the heavy random writes the system does (a proper SSD should be fine but way overkill), it will wear out quickly - multiple cases have been reported of corruption, especially since most of them aren't designed for reliability or random write speed
But if you backup your saves often you should probably be fine...
