PSVR Sells 915,000, Higher Than Expected

Virtual Reality headsets are still in their infancy. Every time someone mentions them, you'll always find dozens of skeptics proclaiming VR simply isn't ready for the mass market, or there's not enough content to fuel a successful VR headset. Whether or not that's true still remains to be seen, but it appears Sony's own VR headset, the Playstation VR, has sold beyond even Sony's own expectations. Sony's internal goal for sales of the PSVR was to hit the 1 million mark after 6 months, sometime in April, but it looks like they're going to hit that lofty goal rather early.

Sony's own Andrew House has announced that PSVR consumer sales, as of February 19th, is currently at ~915,000 units worldwide.

“It’s the classic case in any organization — the guys who are on the front end in sales are getting very excited, very hyped up,” Mr. House said. “You have to temper that with other voices inside the company, myself among them, saying let’s just be a little bit careful.”

It turns out Mr. House was too cautious...In an interview at his Silicon Valley office on Friday, Mr. House revealed PlayStation VR’s sales for the first time, saying consumers had purchased 915,000 of the headsets as of Feb. 19, roughly four months after it went on sale.

Sony’s internal goal was to sell one million of the headsets in its first six months, by mid-April...“You literally have people lining up outside stores when they know stock is being replenished,” said Mr. House, describing the scene in Japan, one of the largest games markets.

Mr. House said the supply of PlayStation VR headsets will improve by April. By fall, Sony expects to begin selling them in Latin America.

This is good news for the VR market. If the PSVR continues selling as well as it is, we're sure to see more AAA companies take up the reins and provide more VR content, which could lead to some seriously cool games (like Resident Evil 7, one of the more successful AAA VR games).

I won't buy VR for three things: Expensive and too big and ugly. I will buy it when it is redesign, lightweight, affordable, smaller and thin in the future. I am looking at Nintendo Switch VR someday. :P

Except... PSVR is the WORST VR solution. It relies on last-gen hardware (60 fps camera for ball tracking, a la PS3). Your hands get twitchy af. Like you have Parkinson's or something. It's also the "cheapest" solution. "Cheap" as in $400, if you already have the PS camera and sticks, else it's somewhere along $550-600.

Except... there won't be a VR solution in the future if it flops now. Remember 3D monitors? Yeah, me neither. Nvidia invested heavily into them, tho. So did Sony. And where are they now? The only "3D" technology that stuck around was the Nintendo 3DS.

Right, as I said PSVR looks horrible. If there is successfully in the future then I would buy it as I just mentioned before. If it is not successfully like 3DS then that's fine.. Look at 3D fail for 3DS and TV. I got a feeling that it is going to be fail because 900,00 is not much. Just move on. :)

Definitely more than what I thought psvr was going to sell from launch until now. I'm still very skeptical though about the future of VR, since it needs quite a bit of refinement and is still too expensive. Once VR gets over those two hurdles I'll think about jumping on the bandwagon. For now I guess I'll just go back to my free Google cardboard from Verizon.

PS VR is in part successful because it's Sony doing it instead of Nintendo or Microsoft.

Objectively, it did exhibit far less lag than I expected, based on what I observed of videos of the Oculus and HTC vive exhibit by comparison. Annoyingly though, I found my hands on time with the PS VR setup blurry as heck, and I couldn't find any way to fix it. So that tarnished an otherwise positive experience.

Wow, that's impressive. So, I'm guessing it's because it is cheaper compared to the expensive htc vive and oculus' rift plus the ridiculous requirements for the pc.

pc + rift/vive = really expensive
ps4 + psvr = cheap especially if you just want to experience virtual reality stuff
android + vr = really cheapo. hahaha. unless it's a high end samsung smartphone + their vr stuff. bwahahaha

And I believe this is with the caveat that Vive actually sold something like 1.3 million in the first year.

Form experience I can tell you that the only thing holding PSVR back is supply - the headsets fly off the shelves immediately the moment they show up, at least in my area. People still have to pre-order them in to have any chance of getting a set and avoid paying scalper prices.

It's an accessory, and an expensive one at that, not a system in and out of itself, so it requires a different measuring stick for success. There are 50 million PS4's out there, so if Sony sold a million headsets, that means that 1 in 50 users owns a PSVR - that's great.

Uhh...wut? HTC announced the Vive only had like half a million sales in January. Unless they managed to sell another half million in just a month, I have no idea where you're getting that number

The PSVR has outsold the Oculus and the Vive combined based on these numbers.

Yeah my mistake, I think I glanced 130,000 at some point and added an extra zero.
