Why is the brand of a platform more important than the definitive one?

This is in regards to Yooka-Laylee which I've seen across many fans anticipating this game.

I completely understand the development team behind the game and their history regarding Nintendo. They've made some outstanding games that have touched many people and created memorable childhoods including mine but I've put that in the past and I'm seeing the gaming landscape that is today. I now have a PC as my main platform for gaming and my Nintendo systems that are secondary since they help fill that 1st party exclusivity that I enjoy.

However if something were to release on both Nintendo consoles and PC 9/10 times I will pick the PC version for all the reasons I dont think I have to say. I'd say picking Nintendo for the game is pretty incentivizing since the Switch will allow portability (PCs can be portable too) but even before the development for the Switch it was intended for the Wii U which is less of a portable console. People have this false notion that simply because the development worked previously on Nintendo systems in the past mean the experience will somehow translate it to being better but is brand loyalty in this case doing you any favors?

Companies are not our friends and people become too emotionally attached to the name association rather than whats under the hood. As far as I'm concerned the portability with the Switch is a good reason to buy it for the Switch but to me thats a weak excuse since PCs can also go portable too. Even if we leave out PCs for one moment the other two console manufacturers have much stronger hardware even beyond what the Switch can offer and yet people still insist on paying for this lower end version simply because of the name.

Unless Rare fans are secretly masochistic and want dirt rubbed into their eyes I'm not seeing the need to support a platform that cant deliver a better experience, of course this exception is extended to those that ONLY have Nintendo systems then excuse me then.

Call them whatever you want but they still offer stronger hardware than a system that hasnt even launched yet.
And if processing power was the to-go metric to buy a game console, Nintendo (or for that matter, everyone) would have been forced out of the market at least 10 years ago...

You are missing the point of the topic. Completely.

I still buy Nintendo systems despite having a strong PC because they offer something I cant get on PC. What would a Switch version of Yooka-Laylee offer that all the other versions cant do?

Yeah, the title isn't very clear to me...

The satisfaction of having it on your (generic person's) favorite gaming machine?
Its pretty rare to come across someone who only has Nintendo systems as their platform for gaming. Looking at Wii U sales alone it was pretty amazing that 50% of the kickstarter was funded by Nintendo fans, even more so theres no proof that those that pledged for Wii U only own a Wii U as a gaming platform and I'd be hard pressed to believe that.

Define "definitive". The definition changes depending on the person, some people think the "definitive" platform is the cheapest one, others think it's the one with the most games they enjoy, others think it's down to power, other thinks it's a matter of portability, some think it's down to what the console looks like etc etc. Your definitive platform =/= "the" definitive platform.

Also, you're asking this question on a site that has a general focus and fan-base for Nintendo, do you honestly expect more answers for any other platform other than a Nintendo one? If you asked the same question on /r/pcgaming would you expect anyone to say "Oh the PS4 of course!"? No, they'd say PC because that's the platform the community is based around.

I look at multiports in that it is not a reason to chose the console BUT a reason not to chose another console.

If it's on Nintendo, I know it's good.

If it's on PC, There's possibly 1,000's just like it and it'll be going on sale eventually.

I understand this sort of question isnt suppose to have a correct answer. I was mainly trying to grab at the why, as I've stated many times its hard to believe people that pledged only own a Wii U to play on given how poor the console sold in the first place.

I look at multiports in that it is not a reason to chose the console BUT a reason not to chose another console.
If a game isnt exclusive wouldnt it make sense to want to pick the platform where it could perform the best on? Thats how I see it but others may decide price is the indicator or portability, etc. Thats all I'm trying to get at here, to see if theres anything beyond favoritism.

You just talked to one of them :)

Nintendo products are usually the most moddable (wasn't true for the WiiU when I bought it at a discount - 180 € in November 2015, just for Xenoblade X - but 1 year later I've been proven right), had free online until current gen (which despite the naysayers, it Works Fine For Me), and I've never been a graphics>gameplay guy...

...worth mentioning that my TV is 720p and my computer was designed in 2007 (one of the last true IBM-designed masterpieces)

If its on PC, I know it will be great cause theres a possibilities of mods, voice chat, etc.

If its on Nintendo, its just a platformer like all the other colorful games.

I would say so but like you said there are various reasons as to why someone will pick on platform over thte other when it comes to buying a multiplat game.

Some games just feels better on console.
Let's say Final Fantasy XIII: Runs fantastically on PS3, and it's horrible on PC. GTA 4 is another example. It runs (and especially controls) like shit on PC.

When it comes to Yooka-Laylee I'd want to play it on a Nintendo console because it's a spiritual successor to the good old Banjo games on the N64.
It comes down to feeling. The same reason I want all my Belle and Sebastian albums on Vinyl.

This is basically the answer to your own question.

If you ask me, this is the same phenomenon that plays into soccer clubs: they don't sport for the 'best' team but to the one that they identify most with.

I always prefer the console version unless there is a really crazy price difference or the console port is broken. It is just more comfortable. My PC is connected to the TV and I did exerything possible to have console like gaming experience but it is still not as comfortable as a console. I have even bought Witcher 3 for the PS4 which would definetivly perform better on my PC, but being able to play the game after just pressing two buttons on the controller is more important to me. Wii U versions of a game were always nice to have because of the possibility to play on the gamepad.

You don't have to say the reasons because it is your decison, but you must accept that a decision is a very personnel opinion and the importance of many reasons is just a matter of taste.

Another huget rant about Nintendo... Simply... PREFERENCES. You make a comparison saying "harware more powerful than a console not relased yet", it is easy, Nintendo has never been about hardware power, it is about gameplay, since the old good NES, there we're technically superior hardware at the moment but the development for the NES was superior. If you take a look and see PSX to PS4 or XBOX to XBOX ONE you will se the exact same console but with updated chips, that's the wonderful Sony and Microsoft experience: updated graphics.

Games on PC can be more of a hassle. If it runs fine on the console, I can see people getting the console version. Some people just prefer console.
Your odd argument about the Switch's portability somehow being a non-relevant factor is completely arbitrary. If I only own a desktop, then obviously the argument "PCs can be portable" doesn't mean a whole lot. Hell I do actually own a laptop but I guarantee the Switch will be infinitely more portable because it's nowhere near the size, and is basically a tablet with a controller built onto it for convenience.
So yeah, a Switch version being more portable is a valid reason to get the game for a Switch.

I don't think 99% of people buy a game for a specific console because of "brand loyalty". They buy it for that because it's their primary platform that they enjoy playing on. I could have a $10,000 PC, but if I prefer xbox one, i'll get it on xbox one. The power is irrelevant in most cases. If it runs the game, it's good enough to play on. Graphics are irrelevant because consoles play games well enough that the difference is negligible, and if jerking off to pixels matters to you so much, you're already a PC gamer anyway.

But that's his point, he talks about multiplatform releases, available on all consoles and PC, where gameplay is identical. He mentions Yooka-Laylee and the fact that people (on this forum at least) believe it will (or would have been) better on a Nintendo console. But it will be identical on other platforms, so what is the difference?

Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.
