I've been thinking about this for a week or so but I have to admit that Nintendo could be onto something with the Switch. While I don't agree with the tablet being the actual console and taking the actual console out of the house, the notion of playing your game on the go, almost non stop is a bit appealing. Now why do I say this, given my hateful words towards that console? Easy, I ran into the steam version of Mobius Final Fantasy. That game gives the promise of being able to start from Android or Steam and continuing from the opposite console. It's a great idea but the sad thing is, there are plenty of mobile games with Steam versions and not many of them offer Steam to mobile save file syncing. It's a sad and missed opportunity.

What would it take to bring Switch style gaming to PC? Personally I would rather have my Steam Machine stationary at home but be able to either boot the Android version of a Steam game or stream a Steam game on my tablet when I leave the house. I know Android apps like Remotr exist and they offer you the opportunity to stream your PC games on the go but they also come with major flaws. Remotr's biggest flaw and probably the only one, keeping it from being perfect is its lack of bluetooth controller support and proper button translation.

Again, what's keeping people from trying this and developers from making the option to continue progress on the go an easy one?

I'm already running this type of system sort of. I have Steam on my desktop and Steam on a GPD Win for on the go. I let the saves synch between devices. I've been this method to play Ys Origins this week.

Well, one thing I have found is that in the (albeit limited) times that I have used remotr that one thing that you can do with a PS3 controller and sixaxis is to just use the custom mapping options and create your own setup if the native controllers are not to your liking.

Again, what's keeping people from trying this and developers from making the option to continue progress on the go an easy one?
I think there are a ton of reasons I feel that it is not more popular but

  1. Many PC games do not really "work" on a smaller screen
  2. Consider how much it takes for the receiving device to do this such as the battery and specs
  3. Lack of proper controllers, sure a PS3 controller will work but it is not that practical in terms of portability
  4. Many PC games lack proper controller support (although it is getting better).
Anyway my current solutions work fine for me but your mileage may vary.

Spotted this on eBay

It might be decent, provided you buy an extra SD card and only load games on it that have Steam Link for save files.

Really not a fan of how GPD reverses the colors for (A) and (Y) :/

Hmm that could work but I feel like the controller would be weird.

Button mod anyone?

Doing some research on the GPD Q9. Not a fan of Android 4.4 and the lack of new roms but it seems to be easily workable for what I'd like to accomplish. BTW RevPokemon, I just noticed Natalie Mars as Batgirl in your avatar! She's Amazing  !

Side note: If I swing more for the GPD XD, I could use it to replace my Fire TV. Only downside is that the Netflix TV version app will not work :/

Well do they not sell a Windows version running Windows 10? That could work a lot better and even could work with SteamOS or some other Linux OS which would perhaps have what you want for a handheld.

Actually using it in a set up like that with a dock of sorts sounds pretty nice if you could do it nice.
