Please note i began this series with Tales of Symphonia, I don't own a ps3 or ps4.

I played Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Vesperia, Tales of the abyss. (best in that order)
All GREAT games! AAA+++
So yes I expected some good shit.
Tales of zestiria. Couldn't get into it, story bore me to hell. fighting system i could not master..
(whowever though it was a great way to change it was WRONG) +- 6 hours ingame

Now playing tales of berseria. +- 9 hours ingame
Story is a little better then zestiria, fighting system aswell..
But still i feel like it's not that fluent. not like the other tales games i have played.
I just prefer the old classical fighting system I guess.
However, they also done away with the sorcerers ring. There are no puzzles to be found anywhere of any kind. Done away with TP -.-
The only one so far is pull 2 levers. Wow. boohooo. that was difficult.
Graphics are from 10 years ago.. (graphics usage is around 200 -600 MB VRAM (doubt even well optimized) Game feels like a fucking cashgrab. Sorry i am just a tad really disappointed because its an okish game but these game were supposed to be GREAT.

Can anyone relate?

I got some tales games for nintendo ds, psp,and ps vita, maybe someone can tell me if those would suit me better. Cannot check out grace and xillia due to no ps3/ps4. but no world map from what ive heared, is already shitty to me.. just teleport points really?
Is this as far as tales games go? and I better wait for new ones or replay an old one.

Loved symphonia, hated abyss.

Are you wanting only those games that use the symphonia action-based gameplay, or are you willing to do some old-school RPG stuff?

I own zestiria on the ps4. I think it's an okish game as well. it's definitely not as good as some of the older tales games. tales of graces is pretty good though. it still has that old-style feel. the Japanese tales of destiny 2 and rebirth r also pretty good. nothing can top symphonia or abyss imo though.

if u want an old school rpg, u should check out the shadow hearts series. they're fantastic.

If you haven't played Vesperia on the PS3, preferably with the translation patch, then you absolutely need to. I really can't adequately stress how much I think that title blows the others out of the water. It's also more or less the defacto fan favorite.

Graces f can be enjoyed with some effort, just understand that accuracy determines how often/how much time enemies will spend in hitstun when struck, and evasion determines how often/how much time you spend in hitstun when struck. Always buff accuracy and evasion on equipment and gems, and you'll have a balanced game. Otherwise, it was honestly pretty hellish. If you do end up playing that game and find yourself asking "what the fuck is that garbage?", feel free to PM me and I can get you on the right track. It IS a fun game if you play it right, very worthwhile, but you have to know things the game doesn't tell you.

I played Xillia 1 a while ago, and I honestly don't remember much about it. I remember liking it, at least, but I don't know if it really holds up. Xillia 2 was interesting, but I wouldn't recommend it. Story was more plothole than sense, and the battle system's meta is, in my experience, overrun by the exaggerated effects of status ailments.

Tales of Hearts was great in the first playthrough, but subsequent playthroughs on higher difficulties suffered from enemies having too much iron stance and a meandering difficulty curve because of story-based ceilings to growing your character. I'd still recommend it, though, as its battle system is relatively strong.

Try and look to the Jap only releases, as there are quite a few gems there in the form of Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X, Tales of Rebirth, and Tales of Destiny: Director's Cut. All in all, there's a lot of content in the Tales franchise on which to chew, so I don't imagine you running out of games to try any time soon.

Vesperia is probably my favorite. Spent the most time in Symphonia since it was my first. Beat it like 11 times, and have seen every line of dialogue and every item in the game.
I enjoyed Abyss even if Luke is unbearable to begin with. I really liked being able to somewhat customize and upgrade artes.
Symphonia 2 I did enjoy even though it didn't live up to Tales quality at all, missing a ton of features and really skimping on the party members. Still was a good game in general though.

Graces F was really fun once you understand the combat.

Xillia 1 was pretty solid. Unfortunately I kinda got out of console gaming so I never finished it...my sister loved it and xillia 2 though. I did really enjoy not just being given a standard stock sword user for a main character for once. I mean Milla used a sword, but she was a lot more of a spellblade type character.

I liked Zestiria but yeah it didn't really grab me enough to keep playing...but I do blame my new found ADHD for games these days sadly. I actually did like the combat but at the same time I didn't really enjoy that it mostly became a 2 member party most of the time.

Berseria is fantastic though. Really solid title and I love the completely different direction the story took. I think that's why I ended up loving Vesperia since Yuri did what he had to to get shit done. Berseria is basically that but even moreso. The combat is really well done and fluid, though takes a bit getting used to with the way they did artes. Awesome characters. Just a great title overall.

Tales of Hearts was pretty fun but I mostly played it cuz it was portable. I wasn't blown away by it.

But yeah overall Vesperia will probably always be my favorite. Even today it still stands up as a really good game and solid Tales title. Though I wish it was easier to play. I'd wet my pants if they put it on PC but I know they wont. Sad so many new fans will miss out on it. I've wanted to replay it for years but I can't be bothered to try dust off and set up my xbox 360.

EDIT: and man. I remember the first time I fought the secret final boss at the end of Vesperia and I beat him with 0 healing items left, 0 life bottles, 3 people dead and only Rita left. I cast a spell just as he catches me in this whirlwind attack with like 10 hp left, and he dies literally about half a second before I would've taken damage and game over'd. Still the most amazing and fun fight i've ever experienced in my years of gaming.

i know what you mean, i can relate to it.
i am a big Tales fan, it is my favorite series.

and i agree with you, for instance i much more prefer the older tales over the new one, e.g Abyss > Xillia , Vesperia > Zestiria.
and so on, heck i even enjoyed legendia more than Xillia/Zestiria , the latest entry Berseria is pretty good.
but still not as good as the older tales , the characters are fine.

but sadly it is going more and more with fan service'ish stuff, Milla is one of my favorite Heroine , Velvet is like a copy of her (Jude/Milla's lovechild maybe?)
but i do not like her too much as of yet, i would say she's fine though, i am defintely not a fan of her main outfit.
thankfully in tales games we can change the costumes, velvet's outfit is way too revealing and i just do not like it.

neither did i like Milla's i always used Stahn's costume on my Milla, made her look badass.

and btw. to recommend you some tales games, do you happen to have a Ps2? if yes, then you are missing out big if you still haven't played Rebirth and Destiny.

Legendia is good too, Destiny and Destiny 2 are my favorite tales games.
Rebirth is amazing too.

Hey dude, Just finished tales of berseria a week ago.. and it was pretty good i must say more then i thought. (beat it on choas first playthrough)
My points still stands, like no real puzzles almost, and velvet being immortal basically etc etc.
I don't have a ps2, but I have a PCSX2 Emulator.
The thing is with tales of destiny 1 and 2 and tales of legendia.
There were some naming issues I think? (tales of destiny 2 being tales of legendia in other region..)
So i never was able to find a copy of it.

RUN! @Chary is coming for you! O_O

Well being honest here, tales games.... well has interesting gameplay, never play it cause of the story. The only reason why you would wanna play it is the characters, the interaction, the skits, the gameplay and some other things. STORY is the last reason why you would ever wanna play any of these games.

Now that fact remains i only ever beat 3 tales games, Tales of symphonia chronicles HD on my ps3, This is the reason why i say never play these games for story. I have tales of abyss for 3DS, i should finish it i guess. I did beat tales of legendia for ps2, (This i wish had a port) But Tales of destiny i hear is pretty hot. The problem with some of the games is a few play with 2D battle mode kinda like street fighter, and some have 3D mode i mean like has a free run option where you move freely around field. Oddly enough tales of symphonia has a 3D field but you can only move in 2D space (EVEN THOUGH!!!! The cpu you don't control can still move freely in 3D) :wtf:

Anyway, then some newer ones i guess play like tekken? I dunno, is just complicated series. I doubt any of this information is helpful at all, but i was just sharing my experience with the games. Find a game with good battle system and play it. That probably the only motivation to play the games, that and the characters, interaction and other stuff. They use so much money on these projects and can't get a good story. I acknowledge that it has a story, i know that it has reason and merit but getting to the end to get closure is disappointing. This is one of those games like metal gear solid where you can play and watch a story unfold to learn some valuable life lesson but then get a unsatisfactory ending like probably.... umm.... Final fantasy 10. If you had to look up the plot of the game online to understand it, you know they tried to hide a bad story with a good game. :glare:

I always wanted to try tales of vesperia when i saw my brother play it on his xbox 360, but i dunno if a ps3 game got english release.

Tales of heart R on psvita is pretty solid, although the only reason i hate it cause no english dub. Then there is that one game tales of innocence on NDS, jeez i didn't realize how many tales games namco made, more than final fantasy probably.

I still like the original ps1 tales of destiny over the others. Never played the remake though.
Phantasia was also ok, the ps1 version way above the snes version, even with the snes version being a technical miracle.

well, mainly because I thought everyone were idiots. Their emotional states seemed to swing wildly, and they just felt whatever the plot needed them to feel. I could give examples, but I don't want to spoil things.

Long and short of it is I was continually saying "why would you do that?" or "your characters are bad and you should feel bad". The final straw was the way the characters reacted to the events following the suspicion of "betrayal". I remember saying "oh come on, every single one of you f****** would have done the exact same f****** thing" and a lot of "oh come on, seriously?". It felt a bit like watching one of those tween live-action soaps.

Which is sad, because I wanted to love it so so much. It might have been better if I hadn't been comparing it to tales of symphonia.

This is just personal preference :P I understand that other people won't have the same problems as me. I've resigned myself to having unique problems due to how anal I get about writing emotional characters.

and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but they all take place in the same universe, yes? ....or is it just some? Which is just crazy. I wonder how long it takes to unravel that narrative lol

I dunno, maybe in cross over games? You tell me if sylvarant and Tethealha was split into two, or merged if any of the other characters noticed. ALL games are about saving the world, how come no one ever meets the other party? :P
