I like how the general consensus seems to be that "ports" always add extra layers of garbage and make games slow, as if it's impossible to have the same (or nearly the same) codebase running on two completely different platforms.

I don't think it works that way with games released across Nintendo consoles. If you think about it, they are specifically made to be backward compatible with at least 1 generation back, and with cross platform between their consoles in mind. The deterioration/issues can occur more when you go from PS4 to PC or Xbox to PS4 etc. Just my opinion though, not an expert on that.
I used to be true but you should keep in mind that the switch is not backwards compatible like the wii u or wii and it even uses a completely different architecture

Different architecture is meaningless here. BotW is most likely written in C++, which is architecture-independent (for the most part). It'll be compiled using the ARM toolchain for Switch and Green Hills Software's PowerPC toolchain for Wii U.

Switch version lags too. Switch version actually runs SMOOTHER at 720p in handheld mode than 900p in docked TV mode, as proven by a gamexplain video.

TV mode drops frames when the high grass at the start is on screen. Handheld mode, it does not.

So the Wii U version is 720p, it should be fine.

HOW DID THEY MISS THIS?!

I don't want to believe that.
Wait until Capcom leaks that Switch emu kappa

BOTW has been in development for the Wii U for 4+ years, how long could they really have had to work on the Switch version? Unless they totally scrapped the game and started over with an emphasis on the Switch version, I dont see how it's not a port of the Wii U version.

If anything, the "Switch emulator" is similar to what Nintendo had for early GameCube developers: a set of libraries that games can be compiled against to simulate the Switch environment. Not a full emulator.

This was used when developing Pikmin, and a copy of the "emulated" build was accidentally included on the disc: https://tcrf.net/Pikmin/Windows_Executable

Ah well, makes sense
I didn't know about hat till now
Amazing how a full "debug build" of Pikmin is on the disc
So the supposed Switch emu is just that? Supposed?
