The Snes version makes use of a S-DD1 chip on the cartridge for on-the-fly graphic and sound decompression. this causes the pause when entering matches because the sound and graphics needs to be decompressed then loaded. As for the boarders they are there because the Snes simply was not powerful enough to play the game in full screen some other snes games also has boarders as well off the top of my head I remember doom and stunt racer fx (stunt trax fx in america) and the star Fox 2 beta having them and a few more also.
That clears it up. :grog:

Now I'm totally confused about all these Arcade Machines and emulators/cores.
There's CPS 1 to 3, Neo Geo and so on. Which core is the best for which arcade? Or can I use one for all of those games?
Would it be FB Alpha? Or FB Alpha 2012? Or MAME?

It entirely depends on the game you want to a as regards what Arcade emu to use.

(psst, play SF Alpha 2 arcade version when you get setup)
Yeah forget about CPS1 etc, you want FB Alpha and/or MAME..... If you're not a massive arcade nut you'll probably be OK with one, and you need to download to correct romset for either FBA or Mame, search for the 0.78 romset for Mame and 0.2.97.39 for FBA (0.2.97.30 for FBA2012)

If you're a big Street Fighter fan and want SFIII, I'd go for FBA - for a more diverse selection of games choose Mame (FBA still runs thousands of arcade games though!)

All arcade cores have serious flaws and compatiblity problems, it's really a lottery game, except for "FB Alpha" (no number). It's the best option right now on Wii U. It ran everything I've tried up to now, whereas Mame or other versions of FB Alpha ended up freezeing or at a black screen for half of the games.

Of course FB Alpha with the number is the best, it is based off of the latest FBA while all the others are older (the other fba is from 2012 and mame is from 2003)

Okay then there should be an option in RetroArch to scale that. :P

There is, you'll just have to set it manually (I think you can then save it as a game specific override). If you change aspect ratio to 'custom' and make sure integer is set to 'off' then you can use the custom aspect ratio settings to scale the black areas off the edge of your screen to your heart's content (you'll have to manually position the image too).

Yep, big big Street Fighter fan here. :)
I'm still confused as I've never been really into all that arcade stuff but I looked at some RetroArch videos on YouTube and I just was like "Wow, such beautiful fighting games exist and they run perfectly on the Wii U?"
Since I never owned a Playstation/Xbox but always went for the "PC + Nintendo gaming setup" I played SF II and IV but never III though especially 3rd Strike seems to be great.
So FBA is better for the SF games but MAME has higher compatibility in quantity?
I guess it's a pick per game then what I wanted to avoid. I'll always try with FBA first and check MAME afterwards. Thanks so far. :)

It seems that (no matter which emu I launch) I can choose a rom of any system and pick one of the cores afterwards so instead of using
http://www.wiiubru.com/appstore/#/app/retro_launcher
with Haxchi I can just launch the rpx from the retroarch folder in the rpx 7z file with Haxchi, right?

Well I have some games that FB Alpha 2012 can't run whereas FB Alpha can. The core is probably intended to be better, and it certainly is on PC, but it seems that on the Wii U compatibility is worse.

Hello;

After hours experimenting with the set-up, I finally got the knowledge to make the games I wanted work's. I found the next little issues:

Neogeo BIOS Not Detected on BIOS Directory
I can confirm that you need the NeoGeo BIOS file in the same folder where the NeoGeo games are. The BIOS file is not detected on the "retroarch/cores/system".

Changing core give's a DSI error
I got a DSI error the 100% of the time. I'm not able to switch the core without restarting the console.

That's all. I'm very happy to be able to play games that weren't available in any way before on any Nintendo console. I know retroArch is not new, but Wii U doesn't have the Wii rom limitation, that's great!

Thanks to the dev's and every collaborator for this.

Hey, everyone. First off I just wanted to say thanks to the developers with all the work they put into making this happen. I was pretty excited to play some roms of old arcade games on the Wii U. Also thanks to everyone that comments with any help in their replies to problems other users are having. It's helped me out a good bit.

However, I'm having trouble loading some roms. I'm not sure the latest build that I have. Might be a week old now. The roms I'm having trouble loading are mostly MAME and Neo Geo roms, of course. NES, SNES and Sega have all worked for me in the past.

The problem I have is when I load the FBA core, then load the content, the screen displays "back" and below it "no file"

Currently using the latest homebrew launcher through the Internet browser, not using Haxchi yet. Although I do intend to in the near future since trying to load through the browser is giving me problems at the moment.

The same happens here when I try to load Xmen vs Street Fighter with fbalpha_libretro, for example, but when I load with fbalpha2012_libretro, the game runs fine.

Yeah that's one of the games I had trouble with. Got it from the CPS2 romset, too. I don't recall which core(s) I used to run it. But haven't gotten to play it yet.

If it's not a bother, could you tell me how you have yours set up? Your SD card layout/directory, the retroarch settings, etc

My sd card is formated in FAT32/32kb cluster. Just tried with Xmen vs Street 0.2.97.39 romset, with fbalpha2012_libretro today's nightly build, working as usual.

Edit: Also working with mame2003_libretro, with mame 0.78 romset.

How about your actual retroarch configuration settings? I just want to make sure it's looking in the correct directories for the necessary files.

I also realized I probably don't have the BIOS file for Neogeo. I'll give an update tomorrow. At work until the late evening.

Thanks!

I've deleted all config files before testing, and don't forget neogeo.zip is placed in the same roms directoty.

Hello guys;

Anyone knows if is possible to play with two classic controllers and ignore the gamepad as a player 1 controller?

I would like to use the gamepad only as the screen and be able to let player 1 and 2 use the same controller style (Classic Controller).

Something like this:
f4fxgw.jpg

I love to play on the gamepad, but for a serious match is better to be in equal terms or let the players chose the best controller for them and avoid excuses from the loser...

Sorry if it gets asked often (couldnt find an answer)
What is the actual status of the cores, like, which does run well and which doesn't.

Mostly interested in psx (does it got dynarec by now?)
And N64 (saving doesn't work on injected games because the memory pack doesn't gets emulated)
