Why dont you just use WUP installer and install the updates from there, no need to disable your DNS settings or go to the eShop.

if you haven't updated your games until now, I wouldn't risk it! only a few weeks before the last major release... either wait until zelda has hit the market and we know for sure nintendo won't release another update or go the offline route and install the updates via wupInstaller.

Even then, using NNU-Patcher sounds easier than having to disable and re-enable the DNS (solety because of inputting the DNS Ip again vs. running a single button press application)
what is NNU patcher?
EDIT: nevermind. found it here. seems it is NOT a solution for updating titles:

the wii u won't update itself unless you leave standby functions on in the console settings
even if an update is downloaded into the system, it will only install if you press "yes" after it prompts you to update.

What risk is there using WUP installer? If anything it would be more risky taking down the DNS and hoping there's no updates during the time they are attempting to get updates.

you got that totally wrong.
I wouldn't risk going online without DNS blocker now. either wait until NO UPDATE is confirmed (after zelda) or update offline using wupinstaller.

btw: what is NNU patcher?

I proposed he could download updates through eShop using NNU Patcher without having to remove his DNS, and your links prove that much I'm not sure what you are talking about
I like using WUP Installer but despite never have using NNU Patcher I would have to go towards that option as it would cut out the step of downloading the update in the first place and it can still come in handy if you want to browse around for any reason.

By downloading I mean the hassle of getting it from your PC, loading it up on your SD card and then installing it rather than just using the NNU Patcher to just go on the eShop and getting it done.

Do the wup installed update work with self dumped games or do you need to download the game and update?
I will try the nnu patch idea, do I just run it and that's it till I turn off the Wii u or do I need to do something else?

Yes, update packs are a completely separate title from the game (and the same can be said of dlc)

I'm actually not sure of what exactly stops it - power cycling definitely does!

It does work though. You start up NNU patcher then enter the eshop then exit it and the games update I have done this numerous times.
I can confirm this as well. Little sister wanted to play mario maker and it asked for an update. NNU Patcher and running the eshop let me update it.

but both of you are NOT using DNS blocker? so how do you prevent auto-updates then?
