It is for cooling. Based on the fact it's using a custom NVIDIA Tegra chip, I know for a fact they get fairly hot for a mobile processor. My Shield Portable also uses a Tegra chip and has a dedicated fan with large cooling vents as well. So putting the fact that both have a similar processor and that my shield portable has a dedicated fan with large vent holes as well, it basically guarantees that those are for cooling.

It's obviously not going to be as powerful as the current gen consoles, because you have to take into account size. The XBOne and PS4 are both substaintially larger. Along with that they are tethered to both a power supply and a TV, while the switch is battery powered and portable. You simply can't get a current gen console's power in that form factor.
What about the NFC reader on the U? Amiibo weren't released at this point.
Not exactly a "port" but I have already conceded that there are times they are used, but in general they reparely are on most electronics.
They were probably planning the use of amiibo in some form or another while the Wii U was in development.
Serious cooling there. It looks more akin to a notebook than a handheld device.
those holes are used to suck your soul inside the switch,so you keep paying for online play and useless dlc!
You know there is going to be "That Guy" that thinks they are spare stylus holders.
It's not really that guy, it'll be the majority of the parents that get the switch for their kids.
There's heat spreader fins immediately inside that will help prevent stuff from getting lodged in there
That will get damaged when trying to cram a stylus in there.
