I have never heard this gaming device vs gaming console argument before. We have had the handhelds vs home consoles thing for years, and depending upon where you found yourself in the world the likes of the "minicomputers" like the amiga and c64 changed it again, but this really is my first time hearing the device line.

Normally when I hear calls for such redefinitions it is usually a cult or a group of idiots trying to police language. Here though it does not appear to be either but about as useful as them.

They could make the dock open to use the tablet as a second screen for maps and inventory. Well, they can still do it in the future.

It's gonna suck playing DS/3DS games with one screen though. Really wish they kept the WiiU's 2 screen functions but in a reverse kinda way.
Well if they kept the DS/3DS screens at their native resolution(s), both could easily fit on to Switch's single screen. Just a matter of placing them well and resizing from there.

I wouldn't be surprised if the leaked and comfirmed to be in development "advanced" dock contents a wifi direct chip. This would make the system able to have two screens for future ds & 3ds vc. I don't see an app to do it with smart tv's being an option. Nintendo needs a reason to get people quickly interested in the better dock...at least at first.

You know what that would work.
The screen is what 6.9inch.
If you split the screen in half and use the top half for the top screen and the bottom for the bottom.
Then DS game would be playable with the joycon attach in handheld mode.

I still think its a mooo point tho. They dont need to suppose DS games or any touch screen games.
Stick to the basic and they will be fine.
Im sure they added the touch screen because its just the thing to do with the price of screens now adays. Also it would make typing alot faster. Other then that they dont need to market it.
I remember the vita games getting messed up because the devs try to use the touch screen and rear pad way to much, and it messed up alot of games

Gotta admit I did't quite think of this. But indeed: it has a better touchscreen but less possibility to use it (the thing will be in a dock wathen playing on TV). On top of that, game developers will need to provide both touchscreen menus as well as allow people to use the touchscreen to select stuff in menu's.

In the end, I guess the touchscreen will at best be an optional thing in first party titles...and some indie games will probably just port their mobile games that may have button presses tacked on but play infinately better on touchscreen.

Most likely it's for the inevitable DS emulator. It could also be that there are simply no good non-touchscreen 6.2 inch panels on the market, so they settled for a touchscreen.

I would think that it will be wierd if they made a big screen portable console without rouch screen.it will be really stupid. Everybody knows that navigating menus like settings and home are a lot better with touch screen or any other pointing device (mouse/motion control) then with controllers. Not to talk about the benefits to games from mobile or pc, which are sometimes better with touch then controllers. This isnt that pricy either (I saw 7inch 720p droid shit tablet for 50$ a few years ago) so not including it will be stupid.
The point of the op is the first thing I thought myself - but I think that some games will be played only in portable mode, because it will be easier. Think of angry birds- its a lot better on touch then any button controller... you could somehow play it on your tv but it wont feel as good... but I cant see a big problem- most of the non casual games are for conventional controllers and a tv and the little part of them that will require touch screen wont be that big of a problem...
Btw does the switch come with the mounting-device-thing? Or do i need to purchase it seperately (or just use hdmi which will suck)?

It comes with the dock, usb-c AC charger and an hdmi cable.
So out the box your be able to hook it up to your tv and play away.

There's another thing being forget... the weight. This console will cause pulse pain after hours of use? The future will say.

Hopefully for DS/3DS VC
It's a very long time away but hopefully both so when the thing is hacked we can do injects
They said numerous times, NO BACK COMP WITH 3DS. why are u so ignorant? Also think about playing ds on it when its in portrait mode. It will be stupidly unpleasent. Non ergonomic. That wont happen. Please stop being hyped about thing they said wont happen...

Don't be so self-important. Sure people is aware there won't be backward compatibility as officially stated, but VC and BC are not the same even if Microsoft wants you to think otherwise, specially when you can't even put your game card in the console. I agree that even 3DS VC will most probably never happen, but there is no need to put yourself in such an arrogant position as if you mattered and start with the name-calling.

"By itself, the Switch unit weighs 10.48 ounces. The right Joy-Con controller is a bit heavier than the left one — 1.84 ounces versus 1.73 ounces — perhaps because it includes an IR camera. If they’re both attached to the Switch, the total weight is 14.04 ounces, which is still 1.37 ounces lighter than the iPad Air 2 or 9.7-inch iPad Pro."

Taken from http://www.polygon.com/2017/1/13/14255984/nintendo-switch-hardware-specifications-screen-resolution

Which as they state it is lighter then a ipad air 2.
and from nintendo
New Nintendo 3DS: 253 grams (8.9 oz) New Nintendo 3DS XL: 329 grams (11.6 oz)

So i doubt anyone would get tried from holding it.
