It may be an underpowered home console, but from a handheld perspective, the Switch is a miracle. Compare to the 3DS. You can't expect a current gen handheld to possess the same power as a dedicated home console from companies who've been leading the industry in power for a decade.
I can see your point. If it's a hybrid console, halfway between a home console and handheld, then the Switch has well situated specs indeed.
Now where's the problem then ? Why are so many people (here and in other places) comparing it as a home console mainly ?
In my opinion, it's simply because of the games. What do we have as of now :
-Zelda BOTW - Originally a Wii U game that ended up on both consoles.
Home console
-Splatoon 2 - Sequel to a Wii U game.
Home console
-Mario Kart 8 rehash - ... -
Home console port
-1,2 Switch and Arms - Both give me a Wii party game feel more than anything else.
(arguably) Home console
-Skyrim -
Home console
- Mario Odyssey - From what we've seen looks like a great ope-world Mario -
Home console
-FIFA -
Home console
-SMT - no real info yet
-DQ - no real info yet
.... (I'm probably forgetting some, don't bash Ninty boys please)
Do note that when I'm writing it as home console, I am not by any means saying they are going to play badly when using the Switch as a handheld (for example I think Mario Kart is a perfect hybrid game).
What I mean is that for most people, all these games will usually be associated to a Home console experience.
It might be because they are ports, because of their graphics and gameplay, or simply because they are a sequel of a previously home console game.
So long as there are no originally pure handheld associated games on the Switch, people are gonna treat it as a home console regardless of specs.
Which is why I believe that if Nintendo wants to see the hybrid thing succeed, they should make a port of one of their handheld IPs.
And this is where I wonder, where the fuck are Pokémon and Monster Hunter at ? Like honestly Ninty ?
The Switch literally looks like the perfect device for those series. And it would actually be a good game to justify monthly online subscription.
I don't hate Nintendo, but I could take a dumpster on their planning and marketing brains.
TL,DR: Nintendo should make/announce more games (preferably handheld associated), otherwise I see another flop coming.
