So Mario comes to the iPhone. YES !!! :yay:
It's time for Nintendo to show these small time smartphone gaming companies how a REAL gaming company does business. It is the dawn of a new era - Nintendo IP on smartphones !!!

Queue Nintendont on another platform.:nayps3:

It would seem the Nintendo minds that came up with decisions such as "Let's go after Let's Play YouTubers" and the entire WiiU (include: name, a game controller with a non-capacitive touch screen and a crappy battery, and a failed launch where even the menus were slow) have had too much say on Super Mario Run. I downloaded and played it this morning. iTunes reported the game was free. Bonus !

So I downloaded and installed Super Mario Run. I'm ready to play.
Oh Wait. I guess not. The game hasn't even started and I'm downloading again.
SMR.download.super.mario.run.jpg

Mood Killer #1.

The game finally starts. Mario automatically running makes the levels crazy short. And those things that make you stick are annoying. Mario jumping over every small thing is even lamer. Game play = Mood Killer #2. Anyway, lame gameplay aside, I finish all three levels in 0.5 to 5 min of gameplay, I didn't have a timer running. (short demo = Mood Killer #3.)

I guess those some 200 seconds of work has got me to a boss level already. Wow. I'm good.

SMR.free.version.lasts.3.minutes.jpg

What ?
I've been playing for seemingly zero time, and I'm being prompted to buy ? I don't know if this quirky Mario game is even worth free play, let alone paying. (Mood Killer #4).

Gotta get to work.
Can't play offline ! (MK#5).

OK. I'll buy this. I got more money than time anyway.

SMR.14.Canadian.jpg

$14 Canadian ?
lolwut.

I guess I'm not buying. I can almost get a coffee at Starbucks for that !

I've played for a total of 200 seconds. And now $14 ?

Nintendo, you are not a deal maker are you ?

Mood Killer #6.

So I go from "It's happening Shigeru Miyamoto" to Mood Killing / Can't be bothered to buy in 4 days ?

Is Super Mario Run good ?
I've played it. And in the 200 seconds I played it, I don't know.
Nintendo is clearly blazing a new trail here. 200 second demos for $14 games.
Of course the trail leads off a cliff ... to the bottom of an abyss we all know the name of:

Nintendont.

Always.

Back to Clash Royale I guess. MEH.

like most mobile games, expected to be crap. i'll stick to games with physical controls that aren't riddled with micro transactions (and a marketplace that is hundreds and thousdands of moneygrab clones)

Go get the black coins in the first three levels, I promise it'll take longer than 200 seconds. The online requirement is garbage though.

I don't get why you're trying to speed run through this. You can collect the 5 pink coins and after that it unlocks 5 purple coins and after that it unlocks something else, per level.

There's also something you can do with the toad tickets but I haven't tried it yet. Why don't you try it for some more time and see what's available to play before going all "OMG THIS IS SHIT NINTENDO WANTS TO STEAL MY MONEY".

I have an android, so I obviously haven't played Mario run, but from what I've heard the game isn't worth ten dollars. The only decent runner series I've ever played was the rayman series. They're a whole lot cheaper than Mario run, and the only runner I'd play on mobile.

I'm supposed to salivate about doing 3 levels over and over ?
Most new players will experience it as I have outlined. 3 quick levels and I want my $14. I don't care about my money - I just expected a hit from Nintendo on their first smartphone app. And there is no excitement around this SMR.

I saw a review of the game, and there are 6 levels, and the reviewers got by them in an hour, you try the first few stages for free before you get the $10 USD wall so to speak. There are other modes like Toad Rally. So there's a bit more to it. Unfortunately I can't play it, Android user, but ah well, I'd rather play Super Mario World on the Lime Green 3DS. More expensive but has an exponentially larger shelf life.

Going on a limb here, but thats what happens when people beg and plead that "nintendo should go mobile." Your taking a console-based franchise and putting it on a mediocre platform in the first place. Besides, even if mario may not work on mobile, I know that FE and AC should be much better because those games seem to have an easy transition (with one being an rpg and the other being a decorative type game)

I'm actually glad they did a terrible job, maybe they won't make more now. I knew this game would be cancer from the moment they announced it, and it looks like I was right.

They did an amazing job. Personally I'm not a lot for gaming at all anymore; but SMR keeps dragging me in. The jump is just perfect, the small but not too small difference between the characters make each of em feel different while being the same. Also we can't forget the amazing small coin-puzzles that came about thanks to the auto-running mechanic (missed a coin? too bad, try again). I absolutely love it.

If no one liked this style of game, they wouldn't be so popular. To me, who plays a rediculous amount of console and pc games, this style feels very bare bones to me. Its like someome is trying to sell me pac man for $10 AND wants me to pay $0.50 every time I want a power pellet, like purchasing the overpriced game wasn't enough. You, of course, are entitled to your opinion, but mine is that mobile gaming is pure cancer, and serves nothing but to make games for as little money as possible, then hook people in with crappy, 1-track gimmicks. The "freemium" category is even worse. They prey on people with addiction problems to make their money. A lot of those style games make the majority of their money from about 1 or 2% of their players. They get hooked and don't know how to manage money, so they buy the $0.20 purchases over and over until they have spent $300 on it in a week and didn't even notice. A month later thats $1,200. While this is their own fault for being stupid, its still not right, or respectable to see companies willingly prey on people like that. In my mind its no different than being a drug dealer.

Just to be clear I'm talking about mobile gaming in general at this point. I have no idea if Nintendo uses microtrasactions in this game or not. My opinion on that game specifically, is that its boring, short, and overpriced.

If you really crave for a good runner on mobile I'd say Bit.Trip Run is better than this one and still relatively cheap (iirc it costs about 4 bucks, much cheaper than the full SMR).

Super Mario Run received a new gameplay mode today that allows players to race against friends without the need for tickets.

The Friendly Run mode pits players against each other in a Toad Rally, but with nothing at stake. That means you’re racing against a friend you select to impress an audience of Toads, but you can’t win or lose any of the Toads for your kingdom.

Collecting different colored Toads and coins are how players earn the ability to unlock items which can be placed in their Kingdom.

It seems like this new mode may be in response to player pushback against the need for tickets to play Toad Rally. But, the new mode still has its limits.

If you haven’t yet cleared World 1, you can only race one Friendly Run a day. If you have cleared the first world, made up of four levels, you can do up to three races a day. If you’ve cleared the second world, you can do up to five a day.

The demo version of the game only offers access to the first three levels of World 1. To play past that point you need to purchase the game for $9.99.

The relatively high price, coupled with the need to earn and use tickets to play the Toad Rally mode and the required internet connection, dulled the response to what could have been a smash hit for Nintendo.

App Annie estimates that only about four percent of those who downloaded the game have actually purchased it.

Friendly Run is the second bit of additional content Nintendo has released for Super Mario Run since it came out last week. Earlier this week, Nintendo dropped three new items into the game that can be used to decorate your Kingdom and make it look a bit more holiday festive: a Sparkly Christmas Tree, Sparkly Snow Globe and Poinsettia.

The fir tree comes pre-decorated with ornaments, a bow on top and presents underneath. It will run you 1,500 coins. The cluster of red poinsettia will set you back 500 coins each and the snow globe, which features Mario standing inside, requires an assortment of blue, purple and yellow Toads to get.

Nice backpedaling Ninty. You aren't smart enough to avoid bad press, but at least you recognize it.

Too bad you weren't smart enough to have make two games:
- Super Mario Run
- Toad Rally

They are quite clearly different games ... and easily people would pay for both.

Nintendo’s mobile Mario sets download record but pricing proves sticking point

MAKIKO YAMAZAKI (TOKYO — Reuters)
Published Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016 6:13AM EST

Nintendo Co Ltd’s first Mario smartphone title has set a download record but gamers baulked at the one-time cost of unlocking content, prompting investors to push the Japanese game makers’ stock to a one-month low.

Super Mario Run hit 25 million downloads just four days after its Dec. 15 release in 151 countries on Apple Inc’s App Store, earning gross sales of about $21-million (16.97 million pounds), showed data from app analyst Sensor Tower.

But Nintendo shares have lost 11 percent since the launch as the latest game to feature Nintendo’s princess-rescuing Italian plumber received negative reviews from users mainly complaining about its $9.99 one-time cost, rather than the usual model of paying small amounts for special features.

“Mario is arguably the most popular gaming franchise in the world, yet we see only about 8 percent of those who try the game actually purchasing it,” said Sensor Tower analyst Spencer Gabriel.

“I don’t think this is a statement on the game’s quality ... but rather the perceived value when compared to free-to-play games that offer much more content with optional microtransactions that enable players to experience it sooner.”

Super Mario Run is free to download on the App Store where, in Japan, it is rated 2.5 stars out of 5 based on 1,095 reviews.

“This is a fee app disguised as a free app,” wrote reviewer Racing Game Guy. “You need to pay after playing for 10 minutes. I don’t mind paying but the fee is a bit big. It’s a disappointment after waiting with so much expectation.”

PARENTAL PRICING

Nintendo belatedly decided to enter smartphone gaming after resisting initial pressure from shareholders concerned about that segment’s threat to its core console gaming business.

Soon after, Pokemon GO - based on Nintendo characters - reached 25 million downloads in a then-record 11 days from about 35 countries via the app stores of Apple and Alphabet Inc’s Google. Nintendo shares more than doubled in price, reaching a six-year high, but plunged soon after the firm said Pokemon GO would have little impact on profit.

With Super Mario Run, the sticking point was known a month prior to release.

“Pricing was designed to reassure parents that they would be charged just once, not multiple times,” when their children play the game, a Nintendo spokesman told Reuters.

When deciding to expand into mobile, late president Satoru Iwata criticised titles that charged for rare in-game features which he said generated huge profit but also promoted addiction. He favoured profit via low prices and a large user base.

“We are trying to make applications that appeal to a wide variety of people,” Iwata told shareholders last year when asked about pricing.

CONSOLE BRIDGE

Nintendo has also repeatedly said profit was not the only focus of its smartphone business.

“We hope to maximize the number of people who interact with our characters on mobile, to bridge them to console gaming and to create synergies,” the spokesman said.

Analyst Hideki Yasuda at Ace Research Institute saw Super Mario Run as a promotional means of luring people to consoles.

“Its main purpose is to create a buzz and boost public awareness of Mario. So all the fuss about the game, including criticism over pricing, is precisely what Nintendo wants.”

Most analysts were expecting the pricing model to jar and were more concerned about what will happen in coming months.

“The stock market had factored in initial disappointment so we now need to see what impact Super Mario Run has on sales of console games,” said Chief Market Analyst Masayuki Otani at Japan Securities.

Otani said he would next seek guidance from Nintendo on mobile titles Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem to be released by March-end, for which many analysts expect different pricing.

And the app has died. Oh well, I wonder how many people actually bought it out of downloaded it at the moment.
