If anything, I see there being a new DS in the line by 2020, succeeding the 3DS. But by looking at the high sales of some of the 3DS's most recent games, I can say without an almost doubt the 3DS won't be getting killed anytime soon. Although the Switch will be dragging alot of attention, in my opinion I see it dragging the most attention from the Home/Wii U fanbase, and not the handheld side. And even though the Switch has portable functionality as well, it'd get a lot of shit on Nintendo if it actually did kill the DS line.

Look at Sun/Moon when they released, the games got almost 2 million sales in the first 3 days. You think Nintendo is going to just throw away all that potential revenue with Pokemon? That's pretty much burning money. 3DS is gonna be here for a while, or at least it looks like it.

in my opinion, the 3DS will be forgotten once all the games for this year will be released. Sure there might be a few more releases come 2018 like 2 or 3 more but in the middle of next year am sure developers won't waste their time on an aging console..

also, Nintendo is marketing the Switch as a portable/home console. it's hinting towards unification. i would very much like them to focus on one device where they could release all the games for it without having to purchase another console for portable and there won't be a need for cross-buy or repurchasing the same game twice as there'll only be one device..

i just hope they remove that stupid "system transfer", it is a hassle when you lose your device or you have another one..why cant we just log-in to our account and re-download our already purchased games? maybe they could just limit to 5 devices tied to your account and you could simply unlink a device online in the event you lose a device by just logging in to your account..it would make their's and our lives easier..

I wrote this in another thread but it also seems appropriate here...

My guess is that Nintendo are already in the advanced stages of designing a 3DS successor, seeing how long the 3DS has been out for.
If the Switch is successful, the xDS will not see the light of day and Nintendo will concentrate on the one converged platform - possibly making a Switch mini or portable-only version. If the Switch does badly, then Nintendo will release the xDS to ensure they still have a hold on the portable gaming side of things.

i'd rather they have a Switch Mini that is still compatible with the regular dock..it would be ultra portable if they reduced the size to 5-inches..

There's either gonna be a handheld successor soon or they keep the 3DS going. Being able to play 4 hours before having to charge the switch on average will never be enough for portable gaming and that's why it's a home console no matter what nintendo claims.

The 3DS isn't going anywhere, Nintendo is still manufacturing them and it will stay that way for some time. Let's face it, there are literally NO other portable handheld game consoles in the market right now that comes close to the popularity that the 3DS/2DS have enjoyed unless you consider mobile iOS or Android devices to be in the same league with dedicated handheld consoles not to mention Sony have very much consider the PS Vita somewhat of a forgotten child. In the case of the Wii U console system, Nintendo have officially stopped manufacturing it but not for the 3DS/2DS.

Also as mentioned, the Switch is not a dedicated handheld game console nor is it marketed as one since it's a successor to the Wii U which was a home console . Moreover the display real-estate paired with the side button bezel is something you would hardly call portable, it's more physically in line with the iPad or iPad mini. Unless someone else or Nintendo themselves come out with another major dedicated handheld game console, I really doubt Nintendo will just pull the plug with production on the 3DS system, at least not anytime soon.

They did?!

RIP WiiU...

Also im pretty sure nintendo now only sees miiverse as a smelly pile of cringe and drawings (hence the fact that it fortunately wont be on the switch.)

I prob wont get the switch in a while...

Unless someone finds a way around the paid online..

MAYBE for splat2n?

You know, I think they (Nintendo) said paid online starts in the fall. Basically, enjoy some MK8D before it gets hacked (but maybe the paid service stops hacks?) and Splatoon. Maybe there might be a discount for mynintendo subscribers/early adopters?

As for the 3ds, I kind of wonder, if it is still being produced, why is there a shortage?

the switch will be at 400 bucks.

A dollar (as of now) is 21.75 pesos.

Every time something about mexico comes out of trump's mouth, the dollar becomes more expensive, not because the dollar becomes more powerful (Au contraire),the peso just becomes weaker.

So by april, the peso will probably be around 25 pesos.

Which would make the switch cost a face-slapping 10000 pesos!!

I think Nintendo's plan of action is to milk the color wheel and produce as many colored versions of the New 3DS XL and 2DS as humanly possible. Gotta keep them as Japanese exclusives, though, just to piss the rest of the world off and enhance the already immense power level of scalpers.

is it dead already because of the switch? Switch is awesome, but at the same time I feel it's like putting a nail on coffin to both 3DS and Wii U.
Dragon Quest VIII on January 20th and Yoshis wooly world on February 3rd are the only 3DS games coming that I'm aware of. They are probably going the way of the Switch as long as all goes well.

yeah, that what concerns me too. but holy cow! I just realized it's already 6 years when 3DS was first released, and the amount of games that I finished actually is less than 10

That's about the same as what you get with the 3DS, and it's sufficient.

When a new generation comes out, the old one has to go. Nintendo can't afford to keep supporting consoles forever, the 3DS will eventually be gone.
It will not be as soon as the Switch comes out, of course not, but it will happen.

What I don't understand is that people cannot fathom that when a console stops being produced, you CAN still play it, there's literally nothing to worry about. I'm pretty sure that the fact that games stop coming out after a while is accepted by everyone, but you will still be able to play the games that came out. This is obvious, this is common sense, but people seem to forget that. The Wii has died for some time now, but I still haven't even scratched the surface on it's library, and I'm pretty sure you haven't played every single 3DS out there either.

Just accept the cycle of obsoletion, it happens on any industry and it's necessary for things to keep evolving. Take it easy, be optimistic and look forward to what Nintendo will do in the future, you can still go back to your 3DS any day and play any of the games released on it ( Thanks to CFW :toot: ).

whether we like it or not, the 3DS is old, i kinda feel sad that it will be replaced soon probably end of this year..one day you won't be able to purchase a 3DS game cartridge easily and 3DS console so get them while you still can.. keep a spare if you could..

that way, even if it is no longer in production you could still enjoy the console for many years to come and have something to show to your children and say something like " When i was your age we used to play (insert name of 3DS game) for hours and hours every night or even at work....."

and games like Mario Kart 7, New Super Mario Bros 2 or Pokemon Sun would show up as a Virtual Console title on whatever handheld or console Nintendo will come up with..

don't worry. with that lineup for 2016 the switch is gonna fail even faster/harder than the Wii U. and after realizing that I guess nintendo will focus on a new 3DS again. at least the 3DS sells well after having a rough start. but the switch.... oh boy! nintendo is going to do the Wii U again, just worse this time.

for the core gamers there is nothing really appealing in the first 6 months of lifetime on the switch. we already have zelda on the Wii U. we got mario kart 8 there (except for battle mode... which is not a system seller to be honest).
and casual games like arms, 1-2-switch... OK, but that are NOT system sellers aswell.
so until mario odysee comes you... what should I buy?

see? the switch has already lost. so sad nintendo doesn't have it anymore.
unless nintendo is going to host another big announcement event in sommer and then announcing a new METROID, DONKEY KONG, F-ZERO, a real system exclusive Mario Kart/Zelda... I am not seeing this coming, sorry. So no money for you this time, Nintendo. I am quite certain I am not the only one with that opinion.

tl;dr: If I want casual games, I take my iPad/android tablet. If I want core games the switch has nothing to offer until fall. so why buy that thing?
