So, I already have an old 3DS that's 10.5 with menuhax. But recently, I got the New 3DS Mario bundle (can't open it till Christmas though), which from what I've seen, comes with 10.7. I want to be able to perform a system transfer from my 10.5 o3DS w/menuhax to my n3DS, but I'm not sure how. I still want to keep the n3DS at 10.7 so I can still install legit CIA's and use homebrew, but I need to update both systems in order to perform a system transfer. Is there any workaround for this?

So you don't wanna hack the n3DS?

I do want to hack the n3DS.

I think you can use ctr-httpwn to bypass update and perform system transfer, this user did so: https://gbatemp.net/threads/dsiware-downgrade-ctr-httpwn-still-works-pretty-good.446220/

However you could do this:
1) Hack the n3DS and get A9LH follow this https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki
2) Update n3DS SysNAND to 11.2
3) Perform system transfer(see below for some comments/questions)

You say you have menuhax on o3DS at 10.5, so no EmuNAND or is the 10.5 you mentioned the EmuNAND?

If so update EmuNAND prior to system transfer.
If not use ctr-httpwn for system transfer. You will inject HBL once you back the n3DS using the guide I linked you so the main part of system transfer is to move over your purchased games.

Use JKSM prior to sys transfer to backup saves of any games installed with FBI, freeShop, etc... Those will not transfer over since they were not ticketed via eshop so you will have to redownload those on n3DS and inject your backed up saves.

Do NOT update o3DS, as it is in a great firmware to hack with A9LH, if you are going to sell it will be more appealing. If you aren't, might as well hack it too using that same guide.

My o3DS doesn't have emunand or any of that stuff, just the homebrew launcher. Also, will the n3DS be on 10.7 once all these steps are completed?

No it will be on 11.2 since A9LH works on SysNAND up to latest version, it will have A9LH and Luma3DS.

If you want to keep it stock, you can use ctr-httpwn to do system transfer. You are in a great firmware to hack it tho, I did the guide in 12 mins starting at 10.7 and it worked like a charm.

Why do you want it to remain at 10.7?

I want it to remain at 10.7 so I can still install legit CIA's, which are special CIA's that can be installed over 9.2, onto it.

If your N3DS is on 10.7 and you want to hack it, you don't need to do a system transfer to downgrade it.
All you need is a CART entrypoint as described in here (Ocarina (or Oothax) is the easiest to come by and you can use your O3DS to install the hack to the CART from Homebrew).
http://smealum.github.io/3ds/ (see the "Ocarina" part)

When you open and start the console for the first time, block the DNS with the Tubehax (when configuring internet). (same link as above, see "Youtube")
Then install A9LH on it (it's only 2 steps). It will be hacked.

After, if you want to transfer from you Old 3DS, do it and you won't loose A9LH on the N3DS.

Here's a guide for you:

Ok here is your options:
1) Don't hack it and use ctr-httpwn to do sys transfer.
2) Hack it in the manner below.

I think this will work, but let me verify these steps.
1) Hack it with the guide which has you downgrade to 9.2, create a 9.2 backup, hack it, then update via system settings. You can simply not update the way the guide says. Simply complete it on 9.2. So do not do section III step 6
2) Use a cart update to get you from 9.2 to 10.7 (here is list of carts and firmware: http://www.3dsdb.com) and guide on how to cart update - https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Cart-Update
3) Use ctr-httpwn to do system transfer

You can use FBI to install CIAs, I recommend adding freeshop at least.

I'll try this once I'm able to use my n3DS. Thanks!

Let me verify the cart update before you decide method 2 as I want to make sure it won't overwrite A9LH and your firmware is fully functional.

Well, there is a note that cart updating to a version above 9.9 will remove browser, so maybe it's not desirable to go this route.

You may be stuck on 9.2 or 11.2 if you wanna hack it, let me do a little more research so that I can come up with a good solution.

Well, I checked the site for 10.7.0U and I didn't have any of the carts that had 10.7. Also, I don't really know what A9LH is.

A9LH is a hax that executes at system boot prior to the SysNAND so it gives us full access to the system. We can run custom firmware, install tickets to download stuff from eshop, themes, region free games, PASLR bypass, homebrew as an app, emulators, etc...

This explains the tech details: https://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-a-noobnands-guide-to-sysnand-and-emunand.410439/

Okay, so I have a couple questions.
1. What's the maximum (sysnand) firmware that you can install A9LH on?
2. If I can get emuNAND working on my n3DS, is it possible to perform a system transfer from my o3DS (no emuNAND) to the n3DS emuNAND?

1) For N3DS, the max firmware you can install A9LH on is 9.2 which is why the guide has you downgrade from 10.7, BUT after it's installed you can use it up to any firmware for example the latest 11.2 with no issues (I have it on both my N3DSs USA + JAP, also started on 10.7 with the guide).
2) Yes, you can system transfer into EmuNAND if you want to have one, I have one just to learn about development because its much quicker to recover things. However you dont "need" an EmuNAND with A9LH, the beauty of it is that it executes before the NAND so you can use it on the latest firmware. EmuNAND was useful when all we had was MenuHAX or Brickway, since those only supported firmware up to 9.2.

The tech details post was mainly to show you when A9LH executed, it does not require EmuNAND in order to boot custom firmware, so you can use it on SysNAND. Sorry if that was confusing.

Ok, so on the n3DS, I downgrade to 9.2, install A9LH, then update to 11.2. Then on the o3DS, I use ctr-httpwn to perform a system transfer to the n3DS. But as you said in an earlier post, that might end up overwriting the A9LH. Do I have it right?

No system transfer will not. The cart update is what I was trying to verify, but I think that is ok, its just not a full update, so I would go to 11.2 like the guide says via sys settings if I were you.

So I can still update to 11.2, or do I have to update using a cart? I found out that I have a cart that can update to 10.2.
