Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

The screen wouldn't take much more power (if any)

However, the extra power would have to be allocated to the GPU for the higher pixel density to provide the same framerate...

Yes, the tablet could do 1080p...

It would just use more power...

Really though, this is all conjecture since Nintendo hasn't said anything about the specs...

Sure Just saying that 1080P is pretty standard fair now, as most high end Android phones, Iphones etc all support higher res screens. My Nvidia Shield Tablet doesn't downscale games if on the tablet instead of connected through the hdmi. And it supports a higher res screen than 1080P and is basically three gens behind Nvidia's current tech gen.

Nvidia has been making huge strides in making things more powerful with less power. In fact they spent over a Billion dollars designing their last Nvidia GPU's around that model. Which this Switch tech should be based off of. We haven't actually seen a Tegra chip based off the newest Nvidia tech yet so its hard to say for sure, but I expect power efficiency to be way up.

The entire Switch system looks very similar to the NVIDIA Shield K1 tablet...

The price would even line up with Nintendo's...

The battery life on that is around 5 hours playing a graphically intense game and 12 hours if used for normal tablet stuff (browsing, video, etc)

It also has an HDMI connection for connecting it to the TV...

So... basically, Nintendo probably has hardware similar to the Shield K1 tablet with a custom controller and docking base...

Nobody is arguing that it can't run at 1080p, but battery life is still an issue. And most Android games are not meant for marathon gaming sessions.

And with the advantage of being able to play Nintendo games! I don't have a Shield, but from what I heard of it I'm even more excited for Switch now..

I would consider these pretty revolutionary...
  • Apple II
  • Mac OS X
  • iMac
  • iPod / iTunes (1,000 songs in your pocket...)
  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Not there quite yet but I'm guessing the Apple Watch will join that list...
Lately their computer hardware has been lackluster but the mobile side of things hasn't slowed at all...

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Well... those "gimmicks" sure took off...

Some people might also refer to those "gimmicks" as innovation...
iPhone did amaze the customers with its new technology but it wasn't exactly anything new and once Android stepped in. People finally had multiple choices to purchase a phone that wasn't overpriced.

To simplify:
iPod = a smaller iPhone unable to make phone calls
iPad = a bigger iPhone
iPhone = Was once a step-up on the market but now Apple's left behind on the race. Now, the latest iPhone doesn't even have a headphone jack and never mind SD card as Apple has never included it).
iTunes = an overbloated crapware

Seriously, iTunes shouldn't be necessary to simply drag and drop music/videos/etc to the phone. Thankfully with alternatives it's not needed. I use AnyTrans.

Actually, the Switch seems like a perfect opportunity for me to play games out of my "comfort zone"- since I can't play most PC games and I've never owned a non-Nintendo console I've mostly just played very child-friendly Nintendo games, but I'm interested into getting into more mature and popular stuff. With the rumors of Skyrim, GTA, and now obscure Japanese games becoming playable through region free, the Switch seems perfect for me.

Think about what these were at the time...

Mind you, there were others before but Apple is the one that really did the product right...
  • iPod: You're thinking about the iPod Touch... the first iPod was quite revolutionary...
  • iPhone: Touch screen phones really weren't a thing until the iPhone... see this... and this...
  • iPad: Really the first tablet that sold well...
  • iTunes: Okay... you got me on that one...
And about the headphone jack... seriously... it's not that big of a deal...

Android phones will ditch the headphone jack in favor of USB-C too... The Moto Z already has and that was realeased BEFORE the iPhone 7...

But this of course is off topic for the thread so I'll just stop here...

Skyrim isn't a rumor, they showed it on the Switch during the reveal.
