Hello, I recently discovered the Wii U home brew scene the other day, and so far I have been quite impressed. However, I don't understand why the exploit has to be applied after a reboot? I remember installing the Home Brew channel on the Wii, and it was something that persisted through reboots. Any comments on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

To sum up: the Wii U (at the contrary of the Wii), verify the signature of all apps. So we can't install unsigned stuff on the Wii U with that kernel exploit. Like said DarkIrata, we need an IOSU exploit!

Yeah you're right, plus the kernel (that needs to be patched for homebrewing) is "refreshed" at every single boot. SO we need to patch it everytime we boot our Wii U :/

Btw, it also "refresh" when you open or close Wii U System Menu

Does this mean it's completely impossible to have a permanent homebrew channel eventually? Or do hackers have yet to discover how to make it permanent? I just ask because if they remove the internet completely in the future and then our Wii U hard drives crash, there would be no way to back up our saves.

No, once we have iosu I think it'll be possible. (iirc)

That makes me feel a lot better. And I didn't know it was still possible without internet. That's interesting. Thanks for the replies!

Honestly, if Nintendo never made it so we truly couldn't back up our saves (the whole having them tied to our account that's tied to our hardware BS) I probably wouldn't have really cared if I homebrewed my Wii U or not. Not being able to copy saves to other consoles is sheer stupidity, especially since all consoles eventually get hacked. Why screw over the fans completely just to delay the inevitable?

Sorry I just needed to rant about that.

Not quite true. An IOSU exploit wouldn't lead to permanent patches. We would still have to run it from the web browser every time.
A permanent patch like the one you are thinking of would require an exploit in the boot procedure, much like arm9loaderhax.
On the Wii, this was entirely unessescary as the Trucha bug tricked the Wii into thinking our content was signed, so it ran it without any kind of exploits.

finaly someone with sences.

IOSU wont bring anything permanent at all,
IOSU will allow acess to usb and maybe emunand but as soon as you turn off your console you will need to run the iosu exploit every single time again.

Until someone finds a boot time exploit there will never be permanent on boot stuff ever.

SRS people are so musinformed on what iosu will allow to do its painful.

Indeed, it was just a summary.
Smea (and others) have found a coldboothax to launch a wii u emunand (rednand), and with the IOSU privileges, we can apply some patches.
The video:

But yeah, we need that "coldboot" to have a permanent exploit. But we need the IOSU to install that exploit (correct me if i'm wrong).

On the Wii, this was entirely unessescary as the Trucha bug tricked the Wii into thinking our content was signed, so it ran it without any kind of exploits.
In fact, on Wii the signature was checked only at Title install, not at run time.
So, you could install a bad signed channel (wad) using the trucha bug and wad manager, then the Wii system menu never cared to check if the installed channels were fine or not and run them regardless of the signature being good or not.

The WiiU is checking the signature of everything anytime (almost), at install but also at launch, or boot.
installing a "permanent" title on the console could be bad as it's not signed and the boot process would either delete it or crash. (I don't know if someone tried to see what really happens)

And how do you figure that?
well outlandish statements that have more evidence of them being completely untrue than true is within direct correlation of the amount of salt posessed by the person making the outlandish statement.

In short: They're just upset that they can't do it right now, so they're saying it will never be done.

Not to put ideas into people's heads but I'm more along the lines of thinking team salt are basically working to have this exact thing as part of the end solution in some form, and they're polishing up their work and adding all the bells and whistles they can to make it fool proof, and generally user friendly in most ways, but then again, I could just be talking a load of crap and being overly optimistic.

I say just wait and see what happens, but we're more likely to see some better form of homebrew channel loading, whether it be something related to a boot-time exploit like a9lh on the 3ds, or maybe something more like menuhax. Either way, I for one can't wait.
