That's exactly what I was thinking, I do have a 3DS R4 in hand but am using DSi software on it at the moment.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

He can , but we don't know what FW he's on.

right, I've managed to boot into recovery mode, but no info on current firmware though :/

Think trial and error would work? Meaning use of my R4 to download and see if different firmware files will eventually load up?

As I had replied on Noobs Paradise:
"If you haven't passed the initial Setup, updating it through Recovery (or Cart Update) won't solve your problem.
On the contrary, it will put your console on latest version and will still ask you to go through the initial Setup.

Maybe you can try to wobble the slider and see if it let's you pass it.

Or, just send it to repair."

Even if you Hardmod it, the NAND backup that is made will still ask you for Initial Setup.

Only solution would be if you had a NAND backup that was working (which you don't).

So, either send it to repair (I already pointed you to a UK person who does hardmod and probably, repairs @gamesquest1 )

Or try to repair it yourself.

Looks like I'm out of options. Just one little prompt screen is stopping me from using my otherwise fully working 3DS. Nintendo think straight.

actually, i would try moving the slider down and then, applying slight pressure towards the screen, move it up.
try that a few times, gradually applying more pressure. dont break it, stay reasonable.

next, again move the slider down carefully, then move it up while pinching the area right next to the slider together between your index finger and thumb. again, dont kill it, but give it a squeeze.

i've had some older gadgets using similar sliders and sometimes, that got them to work a few more times

sadly, there are no software mods for this kind of thing.

When you say to apply pressure, where specifically should I apply it? On the 3D led? Next to speaker? On the speaker?

This may be a stretch, but on the hacking side...what if he used a self-contained hack like OoTHax? Granted, he would have to know what firmware he is on, but the hack uses a save game overflow, so it doesn't require the qr code scanner or browser or anything like that.

Could he not use that to boot into HBL and go from there? He could trial and error the firmware by installing the hack at each version it supports until one works. Yes, he'd have to have a functional 3ds or a Power Saves to install the hack, but wouldn't this open things up a bit? (It may not solve his current issue of being stuck on setup, but it'd give him more access to tools)

Note that I'm assuming that NinjHax & OoTHax work differently...I could be wrong. ^_^

When applying pressure to the slider, the idea is to see if you can get the broken piece to connect with the part still attached to the switch. The point of applying pressure is to close any gap between the two pieces. (At least, I'm pretty sure that's what they were getting at). You'll have to experiment applying pressure at different points to see if you can make the connection. Might be a good idea to try up several times. So put the slider down, without pressing on it, then press it and slide it slowly upward to the 3D position. If it doesn't work, gently slide it back down without pressing on it...and try again.

oothax is a secondary exploit, so he would need either a powersaves or a second system to set it up. Ninjhax is primary, but you need internet to set it up. Freakyhax would be the only entry point that would work because it's primary and doesn't require internet. He still probably wouldn't be able to access the homebrew launcher, and there probably isn't a homebrew app that could help him. The only way to fix this is by doing something to the hardware.

I tried relentlessly and still stuck! I will keep trying with hopes that it is a loose connection rather than a messed up ribbon altogether.

Try open console only 30* degress. I remember having a faulty Nintendo O3DS that had loose ribbon that causes the infamous pop-sound shut off when trying to fully open the console. Only open halfway while it is in intial setup and move 3D slider completely up, that may keep any loose connection still in contact.

for the first thing, imagine you're trying to push the slider towards the screen
for the second thing, squeeze right next to the slider

it may be that the plastic slider you move up and down as broken off or otherwise lost contact to the slider part inside the top screen lid. and by pressing and squeezing the whole area a bit, you might be able to get the inside slider to move again through friction.
