Yes, that NANDmin.bin is the backup of you sysnand. It is used for restoring at the last part of part 3 if you don't have an emunand.

Mindless question then as I seem to not get it. If we restore the NANDmin.bin which is the original sysnand, then wouldn't that waste all the other steps of installing A9LH? My logic might be wrong but can't see how A9LH stays on if we restore a backup that doesn't have it.

Hourglass9 always restores backups without touching FIRM0/1, which is where a9lh is stored.

Not quite. The hourglass9 has an option for that.
In fact, now the only option when you restore sysnand is with "keep a9lh" option, so the a9lh will be intact without any chances of a9lh being deleted.
@astronautlevel ah, i forgot about that one.

Thanks that makes perfect sense now.

Thanks. Both you and the poster above gave me a better understanding. I would of jumped in head first seeing how easy it is now but I always like to see the logic of the steps before doing something. And that missing part of not touching the firm partition where A9LH is installed makes sense now.

Currently it's not working for me to create a working
emuNAND after using ctrtransfer a9lh for luma3ds.

I can inject a nand.bin from before installing a9lh and luma3ds can load it.

If anyone has the same problem, please tag my nick.

As long as you read everything and not skipping any steps, you should be fine.
And you should remember any heads up regarding any potential brick (wrong otp and putting your 3ds on sleep mode while still on 2.1.0).
Actually you should hear astronautlevel's advices more than mine. He's more professional than me.

So I got my new3DS today and i jumped into this guide with no prior knowledge (probably not the best idea). It's pretty scary with all the brick warning, but easy to follow nonetheless.
however I've gotten to this point in the guide:

Section VI - Finalizing setup
  1. Update your CFW SysNAND to the latest version using system settings (if it is not already)
  2. Open Health and Safety (which is now FBI)

Is this suggesting I update my console to the latest version? Will that not remove the ability to run homebrew and backups?

I've you've already installed a9lh and you are running luma, then updating will not remove your hacks :)

After reading this new guide and having installed a9lh on 17 3ds' usin the old guide (which after about three, I had the steps memorized), I can say this new one is far more concise and easy-to-use for anyone, regardless of whether you're a noob or not.

If you haven't done this yet, DO IT NOW! Great job @Plailect

No, because at that point you will already be in a CFW (luma) which has firm write protection. You can safely update to 11.0 which will still have sig checks, etc, disabled.

Doing it now, scary stuff for a ALH9 virgin.... however I can read.... so.....

EDIT 1: ok got stuck but figured this out....

Black screen on setting up wifi connection = hold down power, eject card, boot without card, set up wifi, exit to home... blackscreen... hold power, restart, card back in at start menu, web browser OTP url = black screen.... hold power, etc, reboot, did it again... glitch screen hit select any way done....

That is not the ball ache part....(although each time I feared the sleep mode brick).....

Section IV - Restoring the System

I was on 4.2, backed up NANDmin, bin > downgraded to 2.1 got otp/a9lh etc, but luma cant boot as its under 6.x or whatever. I restored the NANDmin.bin with hourglass thinking it would just be like 4.2 was but with a9lh underlying... nope... need to update to 9.2 using auto ctrtransfer.... cant boot decrypt9 because the guide didn't tell me to put decrypt9WIP.bin in luma/payloads with "x_" at the beginning... so any way I'm now able and updating to 9.2 with decrypt9 auto ctrtransfer and fingers crossed luma will boot soon as its done.

Perhaps I missed something, but seems that area needs a little clarity for noobs like me?

EDIT 2: Yep works fine, now on 11.0.0-33, now to figure out GW compatibility...

Thanks for the guide, its virtually painless.

Ha, I have another n3DS (the new Super Mario 3D Land) bundle that needs to go through the process and then a 2DS that also needs to run through it.

Browsing through the new guide - No more formatting the emunand until your head spins!

So the new 3ds that are out now with the Mario dash plate arrive in version 10 and not 11?

Yup. Mine was on 10.7.0.32 U and I ended up downgrading with PlaiSysUpdater to 9.2.

Was surprising, but I think Nintendo had them in production for a while.

I will grab me two of those and get rid of some of my current 3ds. I always wanted that size. the xl gets too uncomfortable for me. here's hoping I get one of those when it releases in stores in a few days on my end.

The same. (I have tiny hands, and the XL is ridiculous.) I wish Nintendo would release them as "normal" editions, not this Limited Edition bullocks here.

I have a hacked n3DS from Europe, but it pisses me off that I might be banned for playing out of region games online.
