I actually don't lack incentive, my reasons for anything like this is usually "why not?". I was going by what we have seen in multiple instances of homebrew communities/scenes prior to now, and not just the xbox, wii, PSP, GBA and DS.

You fear I might be unintentionally introducing a catch 22 type arrangement (no devs so no devs come in, and possibly even hindering build it and they will come)? The comment was more addressing the "people still hack them today" and yeah they do -- pick one up for nothing at a car boot sale and you can do very nicely, and probably easier than setting up a raspberry pi or if you are plundering an old game library then it is a really nice perk. If you are looking at setting such a thing up then barring one of those wii u fire sales the wii u is not an attractive proposition for it, possibly even if it did have a solid homebrew base.

On potential.
The 3ds is a sub GHz older ARM device with comparatively weak 3d, low memory, passable storage if you count the SDHC cards, bad IO (no usb, no bluetooth, no external breakouts...), sub par networking, not very nice screens and likely always a crappy development environment if you consider Nintendo does not care for it.
It has buttons by default though I guess.

edit. Missed a reply. "this is a forum those which like"
No, not at all. It is a forum to discuss it. If you are going to be disruptive or categorically opposed because hacking is bad then yeah you will probably be shown the door. You don't have to be endlessly positive though.

I think you and I are reaching a point of agreement. Although I personally disagree with your last sentence. But that's just my opinion.

The Wii U and even the 3DS have something that almost every other console does not have, dual screens. This opens up the possibility of some interesting uses for those dual screens, and I've heard several ideas on how to take advantage of the dual screens. Also, the Wii U is more capable than most people give it credit for.

I would absolutely love it if you, Quark or CreeperMario would teach me some programming techniques for the Wii U at some point. I have been looking at it for the last week or so, but my AC has been out and it's like 95 degrees at my place. I've been staying at my gf's and I obviously don't have my Wii U here to start programming on. Message me or hit me up on Skype (I'm CJB100 on there too) if having a student sounds interesting lol. Otherwise I will just message you guys when I run into snags.

Best place to catch us is on the #wiiubru channel on freenode IRC. Use the same username, or announce your GBATemp name when entering, so we know who it is.

I still don't understand how the response for "hey let's start a site to answer homebrew programming questions" is "no because there are things with more potential than homebrew"

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

BTW how come only one person followed it? We need a lot more!

Getting known? Classic.
If that is the sort of thing you want then I guess you will might be known to those that read the NFOs for homebrew releases down the credits, or if you are vain enough to release things with your name in the title then maybe a few more.

"It is fun". Glad you found a hobby.

If limitations are you bag then sweet, I can get there and do similar things for a lot of what I do (my little drill and files do well for me, are nothing compared to a modest professional shop though). If we are talking about how to make things popular, and somehow still keep the "small community" that is not an echo chamber or self congratulatory circle jerk, then that is a different matter.

Won't get help [with normal PC development], wants to make something on stackexchange... dissonance much?

Equally if you think you won't get noticed in normal PC development then you must truly lack imagination. There are any number of projects out there that merely need a modest dev or three to help take them to the next level. If you want to do it while lacking libraries, certain languages or having it all compile and run on incredibly modest specs then you can do that too. You might well still find you have your small community.

Dual screens. Most things seem to have the option to reach out and touch a phone or something (a fair few party games for the PC do it now), and speed wise LAN is more than enough to fairly high throughput if you want to stream something a bit more real time, if you have a client doing actual processing on the other device you barely have to worry.
Also on 3ds dual screens then functionally is it all that different to holding something in portrait mode? It might not be quite as wide for some but hardly reduces it to unusable territory.
We saw some wonderful stuff for DS homebrew with dual screens, it kind of tapered off though. I will similarly rag on commercial devs for a lack of imagination all day long, however I would have expected a tiny bit more by now.

Finally "no because there are things with more potential than homebrew"
I don't know if we are having a misunderstanding of language, I don't tend to phrase things terribly plainly and I apologise for that if that is what happened here, but I would never say that -- I love the homebrew, emulation, flash carts and modding world, there is a reason I have stuck around here for as long as I have and put whatever efforts in that I have put in, but some of the things people were saying were not realistic from where I sit and thus I felt compelled to speak up.

I could be wrong and there have been several cases where everything comes off the back of one person or a small group that blazes a trail (or perhaps paves a road) for others. "if we could just get some people on stack exchange" would not hurt matters but mustering enthusiasm for it on the basis of some of the things said is trying it on a bit for me.

With "getting known" I mean people will see your project. Is it good to publish something interesting to have (almost) nobody at all even care about it? Maybe you want help for making a project; in which case, you'll probably get a resounding "0 views/0 replies, 0 likes" for a lot of time.

Anyway, I don't see where this discussion is going. This is just a site to help people who make homebrew, that's all. It's not like getting help is bad or something.

I would follow it, but TBH, I have enough things to keep track of at the moment, so I'd probably forget to check that place much. Heck, as it is now, I barely check my own email.

Just press the little "Follow It!" button, and upvote the example questions and post some example questions yourself if you want to

I think if you have to ask people to do it, there is obviously not a lot of interest in it. It's a good idea, I'd hang onto it if I were you. But as of right now, we are only just now maybe seeing a turning point in actual Wii U Homebrew development. I don't think it's going to work out for now. Just hold onto the idea for now.

I need to ask people to do it because it needs people to follow it, and how are they going to know without me telling them? I guess I will just post this in the other sections too. This is general Nintendo Homebrew, not just Wii U.

I would bet you will get a lot more support for this from the 3DS and Wii scenes right now.

@CJB100 I've actually gotten quite a few requests for that sort of thing, and I'd suspect so have the other devs. I guess it makes the need for a development tutorial all the bigger. Worst comes to worst you can read my old userspace WIP one, it's outdated but if you know your way around programming already you should be able to jump over to HBL like the rest of us did. It should at least introduce you to the Wii U's dynamic loader.

Already using that post haha. Just can't actually do any testing cuz of the lack of Wii U at the moment.

Stuff is coming that should (maybe) allow you to run homebrew within cemu. Hopefully that will make people's lives a little easier (including mine).

Isn't that what StackExchange is all about?

it is .. i was offering in an attempt to keep it all underone roof so to speak , so its not as fragmented , i think the idea is good but , maybe here is the best place but GBA seem for some reason reluctant to support the development or wiiu homebrew (to emphasise this point i only have to point you to the front page of this board and you'll see new exploits for homebrew for the vita and wii making the news , sadly however wiiu developments dont get a sniff), or i offered a wiiubru version..
