Yifan Lu Announces HENKaku - A New Native Vita Homebrew Enabler for 3.60.

Earlier today, Yifan Lu, a well-known member of the Vita hacking scene famous for the Rejuvenate hack for the Dev Assistants, has announced that a new (native!) Vita homebrew enabler for the latest firmware version, as of writing (3.60), will be arriving tomorrow at "9:00AM UTC".

The new hack, known as "HENKaku", will require the following:
  • A Vita/PSTV running 3.60
  • A memcard with at least 10MB of free space (internal memory is currently not supported!)
  • An FTP client
  • An internet connection**
**Offline support is now available! Launch the exploit straight from the email app without the need for internet access at all! See the unofficial release thread for more details. (Internet connection still required for installation)

This is a small paragraph of Yifan Lu himself explaining what the properties of this new homebrew enabler does:

HENkaku simply lets you install homebrew as bubbles in LiveArea. It is a native hack that disables the filesystem sandbox. It installs molecularShell, a fork of VitaShell that lets you access the memory card over FTP and install homebrew packages (which we create as VPK files). With vita-toolchain, developers have access to the same system features licensed developers have access to as well as undocumented features that licensed developers cannot use (including overclocking the processors).

The hack has been released at http://henkaku.me ~ Furthermore, the hack is said to be exclusive to 3.60, and there is to be no backports for the time being.

Was finally able to install both henkaku and VHBL on my 3.60 PS vita TV...Feeling very ecstatic now that homebrew has finally made a comeback on my vita; although the native emulators definitely have a long way to go compared to their VHBL counterparts (except for maybe Snes9x)...Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I have a couple of questions.

1) I was led to believe that while Minis can be used for bubbles, they aren't recommended due to a 1MB file size limit. Is this true? It's tempting to buy a Mini because they are so small and cheap, but want to check there is no downside compared with using my existing World of Pool-based bubble.

2) Should we download a couple of extra games while we still can just in case we need to make more bubbles in the future? Or can we duplicate our existing bubbles?

I still go to work everyday, despite not liking it :-P
1. I agree there are a lot of bad Vita games (but also a couple of really good ones <- could be more)
2. If gaming became a kind of work for you. Why not trying a different hobby (you could come back to it later)?
3. Probably you should change your job then?

59? So it's completly unplayable as it is now...
Kirby's Dream Land 3 is completly unplayable and Yoshi's Island should be problematic too.

For anyone who is interested; I took the liberty of recompiling ReverseMe (an othello clone by TheFlow) for HENkaku.
I also added some graphics to the LiveArea screen so it doesn't look so bland. ;)

Enjoy! :yaypsp:
Great stuff! The more homebrew the better!

I have a request. Can you repackage CATSFC as .vpk too? It should be significantly faster than the existing Snes9x port,

So the main killer app or functionality, in my opinion, will be firmware spoofing. Is there any way to implement that functionality using this? I love the ability to add SNES emulators, and whatever homebrew people come up with, but losing the PSN store when an update inevitably comes (they still update the PS3 ffs), would make me a sad panda.

Sorry if this was asked. :P

The very first minute you posted the request earlier on, I tried to. But I couldn't seem to get the latest psplib to successfully compile. :(
(I got a "cc" command not found error or something like that...)

I don't suppose you have the very latest psplib installed do you? The release on the github page seems to be a very old pre-release.

cc is a free compiler, maybe you have to install it instand of, I guess you use gcc?

Sadly I have no dev system atm...

I don't have the proper gcc installed, which is what I suggested to myself earlier on as well. I shall install it, try it out and hope for the best. (At the moment, I only have arm-none-eabi-gcc and arm-vita-eabi-gcc.)

Yoshi's Island I get a fairly solid 55 FPS. Not perfect sure, but playable with little issue.
Edit: Noticed it has a default skip one frame enabled. Without that it drops to like 30 :')

:O I didn't thought Yoshi's Island is less demanding than Kirby's Dream Land 3 because it's really not playable (not just a low FPS but the enemys seems to teleport through the levels)

Edit: Have you tried A Link to the Past?

I edited my post to say I had frame skipping on but it's definitely playable with it. Nothing like what you've said for Kirby.
