There should be a chip on the port where you connect your video cables (if it's a RGH)
And for JTAG, there should be some diodes and extra resistors here

Havent had a chance to take it apart yet but i did see a couple odd things if i use eject to power on i dont get a xell menu but it does show a flash of a blue screen the start the regular xbox load screen and it shows the flash of blue screen when powered off. Now this is without the usb with xex menu & FSD 3 on it and i have a regular xbox but it doesnt ever show that flash so if no xell menu its a stock console right? i have this under dashboard 2.0.17349.0 and i was looking thourgh the texts with the guy i bought it from he said he was gonna update it so i could play the latest games from what ive read microsoft says a e71 error is harddrive issues but a harddrive is not connected and other places say its a issue with updates so is it possible he messed something up when he updated it? i read some stuff on 7 sins that alot of ppl use this dash on jtag/rgh so im not sure what i can do except totally tear it down and look for non retail hardware. i was gonna ask if you could tell me what to put on the usb to make sure i did it correct i have horizon and what versions of xex and fsd or w/e should i try to jumpstart it the blue screen flash thing is interesting i saw someone who couldnt load xell but got a blue screen and the admin told him to do this ---------------Format your USB memory stick as FAT32, rename your nanddump.bin to updflash.bin and power on the console with the eject button and it should flash your console back to your working nand backup------------- and that worked for him so im very very lost lolol thank you for your paitience and time.

It's well known in the jtag/rgh community you should have a official internal hard drive of some sort, although you can use usb drives for additional games it works like it should with an official internal hard drive. You could get a 250 gb hard drive for about 30 on ebay used and put a bunch of games on it. I'm pretty sure the problem is the usb drive.

However if you do need a rgh/jtag I know someone that does them for pretty cheap ($40 + shipping) pm me if necessary. (I have a jasper arcade too, could be different prices for slims) They did mine.

I must say that your text is quite hard to comprehend.

So, basically you did have a JTAG one?
And everything works right now?

I am sorry it is not clear I will try and be more clear. as I said in the original post I bought a phat model jasper from a person on craigslist who said it was a jtag but w/out a harddrive. I was told by him to start it up I needed to put xex menu and freestyledash on a usb stick and load it up and it would work. Now after I got it home I read some things and downloaded xexmenu 1.2 and 2.0 and freestyledash 3 I installed horizon and used it to put xex and fsd3 on the usb stick after I had formatted it on the xbox. So I put the usb in and cut the power on and it goes to an error page with writing of multiple languages down the whole screen that has Error E71 at the top and 1 red light in the ring. So when I remove the usb and power it on it starts up fine like a stock retail system and then if I insert the usb after its been powered on the xex and fsd folders show up but if I try to copy them to the 500 mb internal or to run them it says the files are corrupted. Fast forward now to my original posting where I said the seller is no longer replying to calls/text or emails from me asking him wtf. Thus I assumed I had been ripped and paid way to much for a stock old 360 w/out a harddrive. So I made the 1st post asking for help on how I can fix it or how to make sure it was or was not a modified system. Now after trying the things suggested here I still could not get anything to work or show it is modded. I did not see any extra wires near the hdmi or composite cable outlets or any led lights. Today I had tried the eject button trick to power it on WITHOUT the usb inserted i did not get a screen with xell or anything on it but it did flash a blue screen across the lower half of the screen for a split second before booting into a normal 360 start up & the same blue flash occurs when i powered it off. This made me think of the nintendo 3ds how after it has a hack installed it glitches and flashes blue, red, yellow screens etc before booting into the homebrew loader. Now to try and clarify my last post after ive researched the E71 error microsofts support says that E71 is related to hard drive issues but i dont have a hard drive attached and when DinohScene said it was faulty update related it reminded me the seller had said he would update to a recent dash so i would be able to play newer games. My dashboard 2.0.17349.0 i saw is one used alot according to http://digiex.net and that is where i saw the post about someone having a E71 error and getting the blue screen i uploaded under my last post the admin on http://digiex.net told him to do the following --"Format your USB memory stick as FAT32, rename your nanddump.bin to updflash.bin and power on the console with the eject button and it should flash your console back to your working nand backup"-- i do not have any of those files tho it is just a thought that maybe he messed something up in the update i do not know. Anyway i hope this is more clear and i apologize if it was confusing and frustrating thanks for all of the help.

Did the seller gave you a CD or something containing at least 2 files called "nand.bin and cpukey.txt"?
If so then just follow this tutorial.

To set up FSD in a more noob friendly way (without horizon and other tricks), follow this tutorial.

Is it possible for you to hook up your 360 via AV cables instead of HDMI?
If so, try booting it with the eject button again.
From what it seems, it does boot to XeLL (which is what you need to flash your NAND and obtain the CPU key)
The only real way to check if it's really a JTAG is to strip it to the motherboard.
Then with the picture I provided earlier, you should be able to see some resistors.
If you don't see any resistors near there, it's a stock 360 and you've been ripped off unfortunately.

I'd say, make some high resolution and high quality pictures of the front and back of your 360's motherboard and post them here.
Small blurry pictures are no good.

Thank you @DinohScene I'll try and do the teardown in the next day or so I really hope that it is jtag'd. The guy who sold it to me didn't give me any nand or cpu files/info alot of things I should have known before buying it. Thanks @NoSoul81 I hope I won't need to lol but if I do I'll PM. I will get back to you ASAP & srry again about all the confusion.

It's the only thing you can do right now.

No.
I and various others are using normal 2.5 inch laptop drives in various sizes and I have never had any problems.
The hacked NAND removes the check for a security sector so it will accept any sized FATX drive.

Yeah that works too my point was he shouldn't be using a usb flash drive as his main hard drive, just asking for problems.

Using flashdrives as storage media isn't a good idea indeed.
Flashdrives should be used for save game backups even on retail 360s.
