Yifan Lu Announces HENKaku - A New Native Vita Homebrew Enabler for 3.60.

Earlier today, Yifan Lu, a well-known member of the Vita hacking scene famous for the Rejuvenate hack for the Dev Assistants, has announced that a new (native!) Vita homebrew enabler for the latest firmware version, as of writing (3.60), will be arriving tomorrow at "9:00AM UTC".

The new hack, known as "HENKaku", will require the following:
  • A Vita/PSTV running 3.60
  • A memcard with at least 10MB of free space (internal memory is currently not supported!)
  • An FTP client
  • An internet connection**
**Offline support is now available! Launch the exploit straight from the email app without the need for internet access at all! See the unofficial release thread for more details. (Internet connection still required for installation)

This is a small paragraph of Yifan Lu himself explaining what the properties of this new homebrew enabler does:

HENkaku simply lets you install homebrew as bubbles in LiveArea. It is a native hack that disables the filesystem sandbox. It installs molecularShell, a fork of VitaShell that lets you access the memory card over FTP and install homebrew packages (which we create as VPK files). With vita-toolchain, developers have access to the same system features licensed developers have access to as well as undocumented features that licensed developers cannot use (including overclocking the processors).

The hack has been released at http://henkaku.me ~ Furthermore, the hack is said to be exclusive to 3.60, and there is to be no backports for the time being.

I mean games that install that firmware when you boot them.

What if I already have said game? duh

I have a VitaTV in storage I can't get to right now.
Well, if a new firmware is released by the time you get your Vita TV, you can simply download the 3.60 update file from the internet. (You can currently download it from Sony's website.)
That way, you can still update to 3.60 later on.

This exploit does not have the required privileges for that. This is not a kernel exploit or a CFW. A lot more research is not necessary for that and the talent in the Vita scene doesn't care for it.
Source?
As far as I can tell, HENkaku won't pass on privileges required for piracy. That doesn't mean they aren't obtained somewhere down the line.
(Though this speculation is kind of pointless anyway since we can just take a peek 12 hours from now...)

If such a kernel exploit existed it would already be working on Rejuvenate.

Here is what I forsee, AT@T will have a sudden rise of people paying for their cheapest prepaid plan for the Vita 3G to load this exploit wherever they are.

Not necessarily?

This exploit and Rejuvenate are completely independent. Rejuvenate, for instance, could not install anything to your Vita proper. It works solely within the PSM development application (So it was fairly restricted in that regard). Not to make any claims that this will open up the Vita, but it is already operating with fewer restrictions than Rejuvenate.

^This, I had the same toughts on the matter. this exploit opens up doors to run exploits to gain further access to the system as the access will be less restricted than PSM was.

I remember Yifan lu asked for donations because she had someone who could help in opening up the Vita. Not sure, if she was funded, but this could probably be the reason why this exists in the first place.

Anyhow, the fact that this allows you to install native Vita homebrew in the Live Area could probably mean it's actually a kernel exploit. This is merely a speculation, but we will know for sure in the next couple of hours hopefully.

Could this allow one to (that's gonna be pretty specific) setup some kind of "dummy" camera on, say, the PSTV so that it returns Something when a game tries to access it, because apparently that's what makes Tearaway crash on the PSTV, and that's the only thing that prevents it from actually running on the system...

Ok. So I think I might be the first to notice and ask this.
I notice in the guide it asks for .vpk files, but most of the homebrew is .velf files.
How do we convert from one to the other?
(never ran vita homebrew just ecfw stuff)
